With a short staff at work, and a full-time schedule of classes in school, Saturdays have become my only day off. However, that simply isn't enough.Whatever you need to do outside of school and work gets pushed to that one day, so you essentially don't have that day off at all. Every day is justconstant hustle & bustle. Even this past summer saw no break as I was working anywhere from 50 - 70 hours a week. Sure the paychecks seemed nice at themoment, but was it worth it?
This reminded me off Michael Moore's Sicko for some reason. Specifically, the segment where those uppity Americans living in Paris boasted about theiroh-so-wonderful vacation time and amenities. I call them uppity out of sheer jealousy. I'm busting my %$! in school to work full-time to be able to havesome money in my pockets and have that precious commodity in America known as health care. (Part-time employees here do not get coverage). Several friends Iknow are just quitting school because they either cannot handle both work and school or just don't care for school anymore. My circle of friends are mainlymiddle class (whatever that truly means) and a few upper class females. We, the young, are killing ourselves just to make it. It's either money oreducation for most.
So I called out today. A migraine has left me bedridden. I'll face some minimal heat from management on Wednesday, but nothing major. Hell, what's the purpose of giving sick and personal days if employees can't use it?
I slept 'til 1:00 pm today.
. Always in the back of my mind though, I'm happy to be employed during these times.
