Random thought, but I am listening to Kenny Williams on Sportscenter explain his j-walkin' ticket and I asked my mom "doesn't he sound like a black man?" She agrees. I said that because I am one of the black people who thinks that there are certainpeople in our group who don't sound black. He's enunciating ALL of his words, and speaks in the King'senglish. Also, just because someone is speaking in slang or improper english, doesn't automatically mean they sound black. Sounding black is aboutintonation and voice projectory......it's honestly just a sound. I really hate it though when you hear/see black people who attempt to sound uhm, nonblack. I'm thinking, you don't have to do that to be accepted.......

I also want to hear from what other ethnic groups have to say about this....do you notice it in your community??

I've posted vids for reference

Don't worry she doesn't know what she's talking about. People say that I don't sound black just becuase I don't sound like Wocka FlockaFlame. Like lets be serious here, so called "black" accents are often mistaken with southern accents.

OP Really?

I get this sometimes from some blacks and whites they say "why don't you talk/act black?"

I always say what is black, its a color that's it. I'm going to talk and act like me if you don't like it

and this is why I made this thread, actually---for people like "you" so to speak. I made this thread so that people can understand that soundingblack doesn't mean sounding like the rappers they hear, or the southern they hear a lot of the time....which is why I posted the vids of the people Iposted. They were using proper english, but they still had a kinda "black" sound to them.

hopefully by posting some more vids, you guys can compare and contrast what I'm talkin' about

i wouldnt even call it sounding black, its just talking with some bass in your volume and not like a wimp

I disagree with everyone saying you can't "sound black".

I speak "properly", am "articulate", "well spoken" and every other coded term or phrase that means I'm not ignorant. Butthere is no denying when you get on a phone with me that you are speaking to a black man.

I don't think sounding black means you use slang in every sentence. I think it means that people who grow up around black culture tend to have an accentand NO, not a southern accent.

It's cultural.

Does Oprah sound like she's from the south, no. Is she ignorant, no. Does she sound black, yes.

What OP is getting at is them uppity type folks that go the extra green mile to pronounce their R's and often tend to talk with phlegm in their voice

They be the types to demand the utmost respect too

...Like, me personally I'm mixed, can fall into the black category depending on who you ask....andcan talk proper, not uppity or pretentious, but PROPER. Of course I'm more relaxed around my patnah dems , but I don't exactly sound like gucci mane ornothing in my 'hood voice'

You are pretty much insinuating that a deep/moderately deep voice = "sounding black."
