Nadal bids for 5th straight French Open title
By HOWARD FENDRICH, AP Tennis Writer May 22, 1:56 pm EDT
PARIS (AP)-Rafael Nadal's most recent matches were a loss to Roger Federer and a four-hour struggle to beat Novak Djokovic, both on clay, so the French Open draw brought a bit of good news Friday for the four-time defending champion.
Federer and Djokovic are lined up to meet in the semifinals, meaning the top-seeded Nadal could only face one as he bids to become the first man to win the clay-court Grand Slam tournament five consecutive years.

Not that Nadal is looking ahead to a potential final against one of those two. Or even a possible semifinal against No. 3 Andy Murray. Indeed, the Spaniard won't even acknowledge he feels any sort of pressure to add to his 28-0 record at Roland Garros, where play starts Sunday.

"My only pressure is try to play good tennis, try to play well, and later we will see what happens, no?" Nadal said. "The tournament is always really tough. Long matches, against the best players of the world, no? So we will see."

Serena and Venus Williams were drawn into opposite sides of the tournament and could meet in the championship match. Serena beat Venus in the 2002 final for the family's only singles title at Roland Garros; they have won 16 majors elsewhere.

Top-ranked Dinara Safina starts against Anne Keothavong of Britain.

Federer reiterated Friday that he got "a big boost" from winning last weekend's Madrid Open final, ending Nadal's 33-match winning streak on clay. Djokovic, meanwhile, derives confidence from having held three match points in a narrow semifinal loss to Nadal in Madrid.

"Getting closer and closer. So there's only one more point to go," said Djokovic, the 2008 Australian Open champion. "I played probably one of the best matches in my life against him on the clay court, even though I lost it. I must be proud of myself."

Federer, too, took heart from seeing what happened in that semifinal.

"When someone dominates a surface like Rafa does, it's good to see that he almost lost to Djokovic-that it's doable, if you play well," Federer said. "If each year he wins 40 matches on clay, and you never manage to beat him, it's obvious that you become more pessimistic."

Federer's bid to win his first French Open championship-and tie Pete Sampras with a record 14th major singles title-will start against Alberto Martin of Spain.

Nadal was drawn to face a qualifier in the first round and could meet two-time major champion Lleyton Hewitt in the third, then 14th-seeded David Ferrer in the fourth. Hewitt's first match is against No. 26 Ivo Karlovic, the 6-foot-11 player from Croatia who upset him in the first round at Wimbledon in 2003, when Hewitt was the reigning champion.

Murray's first opponent is Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina, a 2004 French Open quarterfinalist whose four career tour titles all came on clay and who once was ranked 15th. Chela missed the past three major tournaments because of a herniated disc.

"He's obviously a tough clay-court player," Murray said. "Definitely can't afford to look past him."

The potential men's quarterfinals are Nadal vs. No. 8 Fernando Verdasco in what would be rematch of a five-set thriller in the Australian Open semis, Murray vs. No. 7 Gilles Simon, Federer vs. No. 6 Andy Roddick, and Djokovic vs. No. 5 Juan Martin Del Potro.

The possible women's quarterfinals are Safina vs. defending champion Ana Ivanovic, No. 2 Serena Williams vs. No. 7 Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 3 Venus Williams vs. No. 6 Vera Zvonareva, and No. 4 Elena Dementieva vs. No. 5 Jelena Jankovic.

Maria Sharapova will play Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus in her first Grand Slam match since Wimbledon last year. Sharapova returned to the tour this week after missing nearly 10 months due to a shoulder injury and is not seeded.

Serena Williams will meet Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic in the first round, while Venus faces Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States.

Serena won the last two Grand Slam tournaments, but has lost her past four matches while dealing with a bad knee.

"I don't think I'm the favorite coming in," she said. "I'm glad to be here more than anything."

Ivo Karlovic served 55 (yes 55) aces against Hewitt yesterday... but still lost in 5 sets... 55 aces is a tour record. Amazing.

Rafa & Roge play today...

Is today only gonna be on the tennis channel or is there ESPN2 coverage as well?
BTW Brad Gilbert and Chris Fowler is a good duo....much more tolerable than %$%! enberg and Mary jo...

Oh yeah...Any y'all think Federer will win this time? He did beat Rafa in the final at Monte Carlo breaking his clay court streak so maybe it's asign....or not

Federers win was such a fluke

1. Rafa was having knee problems the match before.
2. Played 4 hr match in the semis as a result.
3. Altitude made the clay court almost like hard courts. It is nothing like Roland garros.

Rafa will destroy him again if they meet in the finals

I'm hoping Venus can make a great showing and finally get the French. She struggles here and hasn't been to the end since losing to serena way back. Her draw is pretty easy so this may be her best chance to go get it

Lol, well I wouldn't call it a fluke, the points you mentioned are definitely all true. The grounds-crew in Madrid had to keep on watering down the courtcuz the clay was getting so dry, which as a result made the court faster than normal. Adding the altitude factor, it was definitely not your typical red claycourt. If Djoker plays the same way he did against Rafa in the semis, he should be able to take out Fed in the semis... assuming both get there.

Anyway, Daniel, the qualifier, making Rafa earn his points...

Cotton-candy anyone? Lol, what an outfit...

Meanwhile, Fed sporting a much more classic outfit...

I just hope Fed can make it to the semi's this year. I hate the huge gap between the Aussie and French Open and really haven't followed tennis as oflate. I know Rog had that one big win on clay earlier this month, but that happened last year too, and he was blown away in the Final. I don't see anyreason to bet against Rafa again this year.

everyone at the French is talking about how fast the courts are this year.....probably the fastest that it has ever been....can only mean good things for Fedc'mon guys Nadal is great but Fed derserves the French just once

There's a few players who have the game to beat Nadal on clay. It's just about executing....

which is very +%@@%*% difficult

I see it like this.....Rafa is very consistent with his level of play. he'll play a match in an never drop below 4th gear and will have that 5th ifnecessary...

Roger, Novak, Andy....they'll more than likely drop into 2nd and 3rd during a match and thats what makes the difference.

I don't think Rafa's been pushed to 5-sets at Roland Garros... ever. Amazing.

But as for Andy Murray, clay's not his strongest surface, so while he should be able to get to week-2, I don't think he'll have what it takes tobeat the top players... He'll have a better shot at winning Wimbledon.

ANYWAY... Bad day for US men's players... Blake and Fish both out... though they were never known for their game on clay...

As for Del Porto, yeah, I didn't really realize that he was ranked 5th... But from what I saw during his semi-final vs. Fed at Madrid, the guy has NO SHOTat beating the top 4... Fed easily took him out in straight sets.

Nah, I think you got it right the first time...
This is her partner Lucie Hradecka... sidenote ~ more and more girls are using this double-forehand ala Monica Seles... such an awkward stroke IMO.
