saw this last night as well.
spoilers.
The first hour or so, up until the point when de niro first talks to jimmy hoffa on the phone is great. I remember thinking " this is gonna be epic"
From that point, id say the next hour or so, up until the dinner/award for de niro, i was bored as hell.
It was basically 95% talking and i found myself wanting the film to get to SOMETHING.
don't get me wrong, the acting was phenomenal during that sequence and the entire film, but that hour definitely dragged for me.
From the dinner/award scene to the end was good although there were a few moments when he was elderly that were slow, but necessary.
Now that ONE scene, where de niro boards the plane to go to kill hoffa , up until he does the deed.
THAT sequence was f****** amazing.
That was one of the best movie scenes i've seen recently. The buildup and tension was fantastic.
classic scene imho.
After watching it , i felt that i would recommend it, but with some warnings.
its long.
it drags a little.
its long.
Now that ive had time to think about it my feelings about the film have changed somewhat.
That middle section, with all the talking and conversations that i felt dragged....that was necessary for alot of reasons. Not just the emotional hit of the big payoff, but also building of de niros character so you have a clear sense of the kind of person he is at the end.
This movie is not like goodfellas, or casino or even the godfather. I think its its own beast.
Its really nuanced and i think it gives you more to think about than goodfellas.
Also, all of these guys have been doing gangster movies for a while and this film feels like a culmination of that, and think it's the perfect way to end that.
There's a line de niro says to pacino near the end of the film,
"its what it is"
i think that perfectly describes this film.
7/8
