Yes, but no. White liberals can be racists too. You connect with being white, more than being Black. This is not a put down, it is just how your were raised, then the culture in which you were raised, then exposed to.

The biggest impact of ethnicity in healthcare is something I've already pointed out. Poor health in most countries correlates with lower socioeconomic status. In this country, this disparity class and wealth is the result of "institutionalized" racism. To put it simply racism kills.

Racism as someone mentioned earlier was created by Europeans to maintain power, it should be taken with a grain of salt and shouldn't be applied to every single human-interaction. However, when the racism as an institution leads to suffering I do acknowledge it.

European racism has also left human-groups in a metaphorical mental prison. Your race does NOT define you. The "white man"  gave it power and meaning.

Yep there are...sickle cell etc. I thought u were talking about race as well. This thread is a discussion about race, sorry about my assumption.

But it would be interesting to point out that within races of people risk factors/genetic markers etc vary. Many races/ethnicities that are considered different may share similar susceptibility to disease. Sickle cell evolved as a genetic adaptation to combat malaria. The disease and trait are found in places were mosquitos thrive (Africa, Sub Arabian subcontinent, India).

ashkenazi jews and tay sachs. Rare genetic abnormalities (autosomal recessive) tend to thrive in populations that exclusively breed within their ethnicity for the same reason it does with in-breeding. Diversity is a good thing in genetics.

Ethnicity>>>>race as a better definition of distinct human groups. Racism lumps ethnicities into one larger group in order to exercise dominance over them.

Still wouldn't let my ethnicity completely control my actions/ values though. But it is a "part"/ fraction of my whole being and what makes me who I am.

If you think race & racism is not a problem in America.
You just proved his point. Your view is pretty pidgeonholed since he was talking about the concept of race historically and not just in America.

"Ethnicity" is a human construct that has historically been used to divide and conquer or maintain the status quo for those in power.
basically

Just simply because it is used for that function does not mean it hasn't worked. There are consequences to these divisions that still linger-how they matter to those in power isn't the issue, the issue is how well it's worked. Which unfortunately-  is very well.

Black people cannot be racists, be we can be prejudiced. Am I prejudiced? Yup, you know it! I have a right to be, knowing the some people, due to the color of their skin, live with unlimited entitlement in this country due to the color of their skin, then around the world. In my suspicions, I am prejudiced. In my actions, I am human.

You don't want white people to think we're all the same, yet expect us to all act like some black "ideal" that you have defined and isn't necessarily universally accepted.
_______

It's no "act", it is a matter of consciousness. It's also not about what WHITE PEOPLE think. Who cares about what "they" think? We know what "they" think, and that is why they created "white". We need to know that no matter what, there are some who are going to want that privilege that is associated with being "white". By having our OWN identity and awareness, it wont matter what they feel they are entitled to. You need to stop worry about what "'they think", which is the reason you fear Black unity.

Don't try and pull it back now, you are from the 'burbs, not the 'hood! Be proud! You had a chance to be exposed to something, that many of us had no chance to see! However, you refuse to acknowledge that you are NOT the descendant of former slaves in this country, thus not having the same understanding of why some, perhaps most, do not share the same views as you, on the Black experience in America.

What this IS about, is the IMPACT that President Obama has had on Black men in America. For me, he has had an impact. For you, I am not so sure.
What I am sure about is that because of my own heritage and experiences, you and I will always see what is needed for OUR people, through a foggy lens.
Honest discussion, yup BLACK UNITY, may be the thing that might ad clarity.

It makes plenty sense, for those of us who actually live it. I'm sorry, but their can be no "human unity" until all things are equal. Point being, we didn't experience the same thing, not even under the similar circumstances. Black Culture in America is different than African culture. Ours is completely unique, as we had no home to call our own for more than 400 years. In Africa, you are home and you had invaders, which is totally different than what it is that we had to go through. Don't forget the African part in *sending us* here either. I have just as much beef with those responsible for that, just as I do with the clowns in the white hoods right here in America.
