THE OFFICIAL GEORGETOWN BASKETBALL SEASON THREAD

unfortunately, due to the horrible broadcasting plan, i was not able to watch any of the game. was relegated to listening to it on ESPN 980, like it was 1950.downy's pretty much spot on. monroe didn't show up, even though he was the superior big man on the floor. jt3 kept playing zone defense, whenthere's CLEARLY one shooter, who's only got the three ball, that's making it rain. cover him man-to-man, eiminate the threat. it's not thathard. as usual, the unsung hero Freeman, whose great games have been somewhat overshadowed by wright and monroe, was really the only player who showed up, withsome significant contribution from vaughn. marquette's not that good, we could have beat them EASILY. here's to hoping for a better performance againstuconn.

I can understand goin zone coming into the game with Julian and Greg matched up against quicker guys in man to man...but if Julian isn't on the floor andif they're breaking the zone...why go with it? it hasn't been good all year.

I didn't get to see the game so I can't comment much outside of that. Marquette is pretty decent, though and that was a must win for them.

Win on saturday and we're right where we need to be.

*Austin is a stud.

The big three (Monroe, Freeman, Wright) really need to learn to play better together and compliment each other rather than allow 1 guy to shine. I know thereare times where one guy is just on and the other 2 are struggling but it seems to me that the case is when one guy is on the other two just fade away anddon't want the ball. Maybe I'm nitpicking after a loss that pissed me off, but I truly think if those three guys are feeding off each other's playand consistently playing well together then a deep tourney run is possible. If that doesn't happen, then games like yesterday will continue throughout theyear.

^ the thing kinda that I'd like to see to offset that if it occurs is more of a scoring punch from Clark and Hollis. Clark in particular.

As far as Roscoe, i dunno what happens from here. i see you guys on the 'other site' ...major credibility hit.

if i get back to interviewing this spring maybe something else could be created? Hoyatalk still sucks, hoyareport is $ and now this, which, as i tolddeadset....unfortunately i've encountered first hand is not his first big swing and a miss.

I'm very happy/content with Starks and Lubick...but at least 1 other piece needs to be added now, whether it's the Abraham or McKnight kid to go with awing or whatever...just need more bodies and kids that WANT to be at G'Town.

JT3 got beat for Roscoe, it happens. But he shrugged off kids like Tony Mitchell and Jason Morris....couldn't land Kendrick....there were a boatload ofwings for 2010 and to not get 1 of them is a big miss.

..
For tomorrow, Julian and Greg gota bring it.

Close out on shooters.

..
Oh, and Nikita is going to Wake Forest. not sure what either party is thinking in that decision.

i still can't believe he chose conn...i really thought he was off them at this point. what can you do though...

as far as i'm concerned, roscoe doesn't exist to me. he chose a dirty program in my opinion in uconn, turned down jt3 going all in, even though connalready recruited a wing. so be it. enjoy calhoun. we move on. here's to hoping we get a good signing in the spring, that greg stays, and we recruit rakeemchristmas and quinn cook for 2011.

allen, check your PM. time to start fresh.

what can i say? we got big. a 19-point deficit at one point, shooting threes left and right, giving up turnovers, letting stanley robinson dunk all over us.when we cut the lead down to 15 at halftime, you knew it wasn't an impossible task to get it all back. it took the heroic effort of our underrated junioraustin "MUNCH MONEY" freeman, dropping 33 points, to save us and complete one of the best comebacks you'll see all season. it took a lot of heartto get back in the game and take this game at home. way to stick it. this was for you, roscoe. heard he was supposed to get tickets from gtown to attend thegame, but after the bum committed to uconn, we took em back. enjoy storrs.

word to jay bilas on this...

"Best Second-Half Performance of the Weekend: Austin Freeman, Georgetown. The former DeMatha product scored 28 of his 33 points in the second half tocomplete a great comeback against UConn. Freeman is a tough matchup, and his performance brings me to a chicken-egg question. Was Freeman so aggressive becausehe was scoring so well, or was he scoring so well because he was so aggressive?"

and word to andy katz...

"Austin Freeman, Jr., Georgetown: The requirements for being inthe Rotation are that you must have been a winner all week. But I had to give Freeman a waiver. He was too good, for too long, in the second half againstConnecticut. He nearly outscored the Huskies with 28 of his 33 points in the second half while UConn mustered only 29. Freeman was suddenly free in theGeorgetown offense, making 12 of 20 shots. And he didn't take the Marquette game off. Even in that three-point defeat earlier in the week, Freeman put up20 on the Golden Eagles. I'm not sure anyone had Freeman as the Hoyas' leading scorer in the preseason."

At the half the arena was deflated.

First half, shots were just not falling and our transition D was horrible.

Have not seen JT3 this excited after a win ever. He ran off the court, giving fans high fives and with a huge smile.

Time to go on the road and get some crucial BE wins, lets not have another melt down.

i love the fight and heart we displayed in that game. let's keep it going...no days off in the BE

big ups to munch money freeman...stone cold killer in the second half

-- Austin, nuff said. Gona ride his career out with being a hell of a player. I'm sure of it.

-- Just me or is Jerrelle Benimon a breath of fresh air? Very Nice find by III.

-- Still need scoring from Jason and Hollis

-- Need a 40 minute game thursday night

oh yeah, JULIAN...his transformation this year has been my favorite thing to watch

all in all that was the best in in over a year, for sure.

was just gonna say that. dude has been great. re-watched the game with LMB last night since you don't always take away as much when seeing itat the bar and julian was huge. he chipped in with a couple KEY plays down the stretch. love this dude.

My one beef with Julian is forcing shots. He did it alot more earlier in the year, still does it about 2-3 times a game. Needs to kick it out and reset.

Like you said allen, we need to find some scoring from this bench. I think against Uconn the bench had 4pts in about 35 minutes played. Just not enough.

btw, got banned from that other forum.

No decent alternativesfor hoya bball fans. I guess thats what happens when your fan base is made up of rich yuppies.

Lets get it this thursday...

great pic, and we'll def have to start something this spring

Mikael Hopkins (Dematha big man, 2011) was behind the bench with his mom and seated next to Markel

He fits the bill with III's system. Top 30-40 talent

And I'd expect Nikita's 'ship to be filled up this spring, maybe even take on 2 kids. should be interesting with who they find

Allen- There was a guy with a maroon jumpsuit behind the Gtown bench. Was he a recruit?

what's the deal on quinn cook? i don't think we've given him an offer yet, but has he come to any of our games? i think he was at mcdonough for MM,wasn't he?

there involved with him, he's been around for forever pretty much.

But Kentucky and UNC are kinda what he's lookin at, UNC is his dream school.

The staff did drop in to watch Quinn last week, I believe

the other option at PG is Tyrone Johnson from New Jersey. He was at MM this year, i dont think Quinn was.

interviewed Tyrone this summer.
http://cuttingdownnets.wordpress.com/2009/07/23/tyrone-johnson/

Tyrone is still in the process of finding the right school. His list consists of; Georgetown, Villanova, Rutgers, Kentucky, West Virginia, Uconn, Seton Hall, Syracuse, Marquette, Virginia Tech, and Providence. Tyrone has visited; Georgetown, Villanova, Seton Hall, Rutgers and West Virginia. Pointing out that they were all great campus and enjoyed the DC area locale wise, and the West Virginia campus was wonderful.

Location does not matter, but there is a preference. "It really doesn't matter, anywhere is cool. But I do like the Big East."

There was a recent quote from his AAU Coach, Derrick Bobbitt that Georgetown appeared the favorite, "Yeah. Along with Villanova, those are the two recruiting me heavily. But I'm still wide open."

His trip to Georgetown featured a special conversation with a legend of college basketball, John Thompson II. Yes, the father of current head coach, John Thompson III. "I got to talk with him. It was a privilege to speak with him, he's dealt with so many players and put so many in the league that you know, he knows what he's talking about." The original Coach Thompson even gave him a comparison, "He said I'm something like Allen Iverson. Kinda guards that can do it all, score and pass." Tyrone did point out he thinks he may be more of a true point guard.

GU VS SETON HALL PREVIEW (THANKS, ESPN.COM)

Georgetown is trying to put the memory of last season's disastrous play in the Big East behind it. One loss it would particularly like to forget was toJeremy Hazell and Seton Hall.

The 11th-ranked Hoyas take on the Pirates on Thursday night, looking to slow down one of the nation's top scorers in Hazell.

Georgetown (12-2, 3-1) is hoping to get a measure of revenge against Seton Hall (10-5, 1-3) after the Pirates defeated the then-12th-ranked Hoyas 65-60 on Jan.25, snapping a four-game losing streak in the series.

Georgetown shot a season-low 32.7 percent and had 17 turnovers in the loss, which was part of a season-high five-game skid for the Hoyas. They would eventuallyfinish 7-11 in the Big East -- their worst such record in five seasons under coach John Thompson III.

Thompson has Georgetown off to stronger start in conference play this season. It bounced back from a three-point defeat at Marquette on Jan. 6 with a 72-69come-from-behind win at home over No. 13 Connecticut on Saturday.

Austin Freeman scored 28 of his career-high 33 points in the second half to help the Hoyas rally from a 19-point deficit. Freeman was 12 of 20 from the field, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range, and also had seven rebounds with three steals.

Freeman, who has moved into the team lead in scoring with 15.4 points per game, had 20 against Marquette. In 2008-09, the junior guard averaged 11.4 points.

"There's growth each year at all ends of the floor. Austin is doing a much better job -- and he continues to do a better job -- of playing the game, instead of watching the game," Thompson said. "He's more engaged when the ball's not in his hands."

Freeman, though, has struggled in two career contests against Seton Hall, scoring 12 points on 3-of-17 shooting.

He and the Hoyas will be looking to find a way to slow Hazell, something few teams have been able to do. Hazell scored 23 against Georgetown last seasondespite shooting 5 of 21.

Hazell had 33 points as Seton Hall snapped a four-game losing streak Saturday with an 83-76 win over Cincinnati. Also a junior guard, Hazell made five of 103-pointers to help the Pirates rally from a 12-point first-half deficit.

Hazell is second in the Big East in scoring, trailing Notre Dame's Luke Harangody, and overall is among the leaders in Division I, averaging 23.3 points. He has scored 30 or more points in three of his last five games.

Seton Hall is 0-3 against Top 25 teams, but the losses have been by an average of seven points and one came in overtime. Hazell was a big factor in keepingthose games so close, scoring a combined 79 points against West Virginia and Syracuse. However, he shot 5 of 20 and finished with only 13 points againstConnecticut on Jan. 6.

Seton Hall has lost its last two road games against Georgetown. The Pirates also have dropped 13 in a row away from home against Top 25 foes since beatingPittsburgh in 2006.

i say again, superb win against uconn last saturday. took a lot of heart and hustle to get back and win that game. nothing but love for these dudes.

but...

tonight is another game. seton hall may not be ranked, but they are a pesky team with a major impact player in hazell. we were beyond sloppy last year. we canwin this game. limit turnovers, make good passes, get big in the paint, get the boards, and get nice with it from three. easier said than done, but we can dothis. gotta take hazell down and outrebound Pope, whos averaging something like 11 boards a game. greg's got a height advantage on him, but that's noteverything. hoping to see the big three show what they're made of, and see freeman set the record straight after poor showings against the pirates. itwon't be easy to beat these guys, but what will be even harder is trying not to laugh my %** off when the camera zooms in on hazell's face...see belowreferences...
