The Official Mac Thread (Docs, Themes, Apps, Etc.)

I think I just found my answer.
Doesn't seem justifiable to upgrade from this to the newer model, perhaps I'll go with the 15" quad core if I need a bit more power.

https://everymac.com/systems/apple/...uch-bar-late-2016-performance-benchmarks.html
Using the Geekbench 3.0 benchmark and comparing the "Early 2015" 13-Inch MacBook Pro "Retina" models replaced, the standard "Late 2016" 13-Inch MacBook Pro "Touch Bar" models are modestly faster overall:

Early 2015 MBPr Late 2016 MBPtb Percent Faster
"Core i5" 2.7 13" "Core i5" 2.0 13" 2%-3%
"Core i5" 2.9 13" "Core i5" 2.9 13" Touch 3%-4%

Compared to the "Mid-2015" 15-Inch MacBook Pro "Retina" models replaced, the standard "Late 2016" 15-Inch MacBook Pro "Touch Bar" models also are a bit faster:

Mid-2015 MBPr Late 2016 MPBtb Percent Faster
"Core i7" 2.2 15" (IG) "Core i7" 2.6 15" Touch 1%-7%
"Core i7" 2.5 15" (DG) "Core i7" 2.7 15" Touch 3%-5%
Certainly in terms of benchmarks, the performance increase between these models and their predecessors is decidedly small.

What is hyperthreading?

I know they introduced quad core in Early 2011 with the Macbook Pro 15".
2.0 GHz quad-core (2635QM) (15" only) or 2.2 GHz quad-core (2720QM)

Will an old quad core outproduce a newer dual core?
Depends. On single thread processes an newer dual core will probably out perform and older quad. (but not always the case). In mulithreaded processes an older quad can out perform a newer dual. (again not always the case, but usually simple math 4 are better than 2).

Hyperthreading, I believe is the ability for cores to make a virtual core? So not doubling speed, but allows to put idle processes in the virtual to allow better throughput. I hope I am right an that it makes sense. lol

In conclusion, it depends what you will be doing. But there are other factors, RAM capacity and speed. HD speed. Program compatibility. Usually the newer stuff is faster and more efficient. The cores come into play, when defining what type of work you are doing.

can anyone vouch for this?

no offense to poster would just like to know if anyone’s purchased and used successfully
I looked at his profile/feedback and nothing fishy pops out. I may cop just for the 5 TB of cloud storage since I get Office through work. It looks like he's just somehow generating hundreds of education accounts. Even if it doesn't work, it's only $4.

All of this pretty much.

don’t care about the $4 as much as it being spyware/malware or being flagged by microsoft?

probably overthinking it but that’s what i was thinking lol

If it truly works how they say in the description, whatever you download will be 100% legit. You'll login to office.com with whatever username/password they give you and download straight from Microsoft's servers. But since I'm sure these dudes didn't get their licenses in the most moral ways then Microsoft definitely might flag the account .

It worked for me, no issues yet. Used Word and Excel so far. I had/have the same concerns.

A couple years ago I upgraded my hard drive to a ssd evo on my early 2011. All was fine until last year and the hard drive cable failed, ordered a new one on amazon and it worked 6 months. Didnt want to order a new one until ifixit restocked, so I pulled out the ssd and booted up through the usb that worked until it stopped taking my password. Has anyone had this issue, where you can’t put in the password. I try to do the forgot password and it says it can not connect to iCloud. I plug in the original hard drive and I works but I would like to get the info off my other hard drive. It’s mostly pirated shows/movies, porn and sex tapes with ex’s. Lol!

^ thats weird... i had a early 2011 also and when i swapped the ssd drive it worked perfect and didnt have a problem... the 2011 mbp ended up breaking twice not because of the ssd drive but because of of a failed logic board...i ended up just retiring it and giving it away and copped the 2015 mbp

Apple updated MacBook Pro with faster 8th- and 9th-generation Intel Core processors, bringing eight cores to MacBook Pro for the first time. MacBook Pro now delivers two times faster performance than a quad-core MacBook Pro and 40 percent more performance than a 6-core MacBook Pro, making it the fastest Mac notebook ever.1 These new processors, combined with powerful graphics, the brilliant and colorful Retina display, super-fast SSDs, the Apple T2 Security Chip, all-day battery life and macOS, make MacBook Pro the world’s best pro notebook.
“Whether it’s college students mastering a course of study, developers building world-class apps or video editors creating feature films, we’re constantly amazed at what our customers do with their MacBook Pro,” said Tom Boger, Apple’s senior director of Mac Product Marketing. “Now with 8-core processors for an incredible performance boost, along with its stunning Retina display, fast storage, all-day battery life and running macOS, MacBook Pro continues to be the world’s best pro notebook and we can’t wait to get it into our customer’s hands to see what they do next.”

Powerful Performance Boost for Pro Workloads
MacBook Pro is more powerful than ever for compiling code, processing high-resolution images, rendering 3D graphics, editing multiple streams of 4K video and more. The 15-inch MacBook Pro now features faster 6- and 8-core Intel Core processors, delivering Turbo Boost speeds up to 5.0 GHz, while the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar features faster quad-core processors with Turbo Boost speeds up to 4.7 GHz.
When compared to the fastest quad-core 15-inch MacBook Pro, the new MacBook Pro with 8-core processors is up to two times faster, so:
  • Music producers can play back massive multi-track projects with up to two times more Alchemy plug-ins in Logic Pro X.
  • 3D designers can render scenes up to two times faster in Maya Arnold.
  • Photographers can apply complex edits and filters up to 75 percent faster in Photoshop.
  • Developers can compile code up to 65 percent faster in Xcode.
  • Scientists and researchers can compute complex fluid dynamics simulations up to 50 percent faster in TetrUSS.
  • Video editors can edit up to 11 simultaneous multicam streams of 4K video in Final Cut Pro X.

The World’s Best Pro Notebook
Along with these powerful new processors, MacBook Pro features the best Mac notebook display ever, a stunning Retina display with 500 nits of brightness, support for the P3 wide color gamut and True Tone technology, for a natural, true-to-life viewing experience. It also comes with incredibly immersive stereo speakers with wide-stereo sound, the security and convenience of Touch ID, dynamic and contextual controls with Touch Bar and a large Force Touch trackpad. MacBook Pro also features blazing fast SSD storage, the Apple T2 Security Chip for enhanced security, and powerful and versatile Thunderbolt 3 ports for data transfer, charging and connecting up to two 5K displays or four external GPUs.

macOS Mojave
All new Macs come with macOS Mojave, the latest version of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system, with features inspired by pros but designed for everyone. In Mojave, Dark Mode transforms the desktop with a dramatic new look that puts the focus on user content, Stacks organizes messy desktops by automatically stacking files into neat groups and FaceTime supports group calling. Mojave also brings iOS apps, including News, Stocks, Voice Memos and Home to the Mac and features a redesigned Mac App Store with rich editorial content and the addition of apps from top developers, including Microsoft and Adobe.
MacBook is powered by macOS Mojave, the latest version of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system.
Pricing and Availability
Starting at $1,799 and $2,399 respectively, the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and 15-inch MacBook Pro are available today through apple.com, the Apple Store app and in select Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Resellers later this week. Additional technical specifications, configure-to-order options and accessories are available online at apple.com/mac.

I just bought my 13 in MBP last month and then they go and refresh it . The changes are nice, but I am more than happy with mine

I have a mid 15" 2017 MBP with the touch bar.

Space Grey
2.9 GHz quad-core i7
16 GB RAM
Radeon Pro 560
512 GB SSD

How much is this thing worth if I were to sell it?

I already have a 2018 13" MBP that work provided me so it's just collecting dust at this point.

Also the new Pros have a 4th generation keyboard with new materials..

“To address the problem, Apple said they changed the material in the keyboard's butterfly mechanism that should substantially reduce problems that some users have seen.“

Interesting they didn’t say fix.

AZwildcats AZwildcats I’ve heard some people had success with Apple exchanging their recent purchase for the new model if requested.

I heard the same, so I made sure to get the AppleCare with it. If this keyboard craps out on me in a few years, I will request the newer model (or at least the new keyboard)

Yes, it was mentioned that the 2018 is now also a part of the keyboard repair program and the keyboard would be replaced with the new 4th gen keyboard should it fail on you. The 2017 and below models can not receive the new 4th gen keyboard if needed.

Have a 2014 MBP, survived a bottle of jameson spilling on it (granted the screen has been stained since), got it with a 1TB SSD off CL a few years back and this thing still hasn't failed me. Fan gets loud every now and then but that's it.
My 08 matte black MB still runs fine too, they just stopped allowing OS updates on that model.
Unibody's are ****ing beasts

Late 2013 MBP 15” BTO Processor and 1 TB SSD. 16gb ram. Still going strong. Immaculate condition too.

I just need a dedicated workspace and external monitor.

The 13inch is still a perfect screen size for me, but I'm getting annoyed having to toggle multiple windows.

Anyone have the new Mac Mini? Thinking of picking it up if no major refreshes come to it June during keynote.

My 2015 MBP screen got a small crack and part of the screen is messed up, to replace with new one like 400ish, not sure what to do.....works well when plugged to monitor
