Folks always overreact watching summer league

Summer League is more about finding out players who CAN'T play in the NBA, versus players who CAN (maybe, possibly, sorta). Teams will take fliers on guys. That being said, the broadcast of the Lakers-Thunder game brought up the fact there was a former 16th overall pick who was drafted eight years ago, and still playing in SL trying to make a roster. He's like a journeyman baseball player, toiling away in the minors. Also, mother effing Hasheem Thabeet was a #2 overall pick, ahead of *checks notes* James Harden. Like, what are we talking about. Everyone knew in the moment it was an awful pick. The Sonics picked g-damn Swift, Petro and Sene in consecutive drafts, and the entire fan base was livid over it. You can tell early on with guys, very easily, a lot of the time.

Honestly I think this is all a smokescreen to make it look like the NBA is taking this really seriously. Knowing full well they're not going to bump heads with the richest owner in sports. Wouldn't give Kawhi his extension upfront though if I was Toronto.

Bill Simmons has started a thing on his pod where he talks about random old players who maybe aren't Hall of Famers, but deserve recognition. He focused on Gus Williams this week, the 1979 Finals MVP. It's crazy to see how slow Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes were against that Sonics team in 1979. Jack Sikma and Paul Silas were just more athletic, and that's a big reason why they won. Gus and DJ were awesome, obviously, but it's crazy to see how fast they moved against them. They ran them off the court in five games, and probably would have repeated if not for Magic entering the league. Lenny was a 1 of 1 coach. He turned a losing team into a champion within one season.

Ja may have fallen off as a player, but I think the Ja 3s did well. They’re like the one Nike sig shoe from this last season cycle that I haven’t seen heavily discounted in multiple CWs.
