Just spent the afternoon fixing a fan in my kitchen. The fan looked crappy and when I opened it it was filthy so that seemed the obvious culprit - changed it, no joy.

Then the switch and socket it runs off (spur off a ring main) was a bit sticky feeling so I went back to the hardware store and changed both of those. No joy.

So got my multimeter out and checked all the wires - no signal between the live coming off the mains to where it goes into the fan switch - it’s only about 6” long and was installed by an electrician when we had some work done - when I pulled it through the case the centre of it was wrapped in tape - he’d clearly cut it too short then “repaired” it and stuffed it in.

Will take me about 5 minutes to repair it now I know what it is but right now. I have other stuff I could have been doing.
