So it is the content?
as for the rest I just don't see it.

Lets just focus on the content then. I just see it like this... Weeknd's content isn't bad. It's just not as expansive. Frank Ocean sings about more stuff, I also feel he's more eloquent in his lyrics. This isn't a knock on Weeknd either, you have to factor in how long they've each been in the music business. Frank been around for a while, so he's had more opportunities to perfect his style and work on writing about more than just girls/love. Weeknd should, judging by the quality of 'House of Balloons,' be able to easily increase his lyrical abilities/content over time into something more expansive.
I definitely get what you're saying about content. I was at work last week and wouldn't stop singing random lines form House of Balloons. My homegirl who I work with asked me what had been stuck in my head all day. I told her about the Weeknd and to check out HoB.
She's the **** hooper, super straight edge type.

It wasn't until I got home that night that I realized what a terrible recommendation it was for her. She's not trying to hear that !%@%.

I agree with most of your points.  The Weeknd is young and relatively inexperienced, and it will serve him best to diversify his subject matter in the long run.

That said, with one nine track tape as the only material to judge him by, he covers the party/drug lifestyle exceptionally well. Honestly, better than anybody in r&b that I'm aware of in the last few years.

To me nothing I've heard form Frank Ocean on those lifestyles has captured the realities and fantasies, the highs and lows, the pleasures and pains, inherent in drug use, the same way The Weeknd did through out House of Balloons.

and to give him further credit, the best song on the tape (imo), Wicked Games, isn't about drugs or partying at all although there are some references.

That.

And I really like both of them...a lot. But Frank Ocean doesn't take you inside of a world though...if you will.

Both are dope. And I don't really think they're that similar.

I don't know about that, it wasn't even flipped at all. Frank just sang over the original track. But I get what you're saying though

. And cosign with everything else.
Yeah, he definitely didn't sample anything. He just sang over the instrumental.
And honestly when I talk about Frank Ocean with music heads, using the Hotel California track is their main beef with him... everyone is saying "he shouldn't have touched that..." I tend to agree. You just shouldn't mess with certain classic rock songs.

My shorty has been playing "Ohh in Love" off of that Lonny Breaux Collection and that might be my favorite joint from him. That and songs for women.

That was my joint too. But that's obviously not Lonny's voice...I found out that's actually Mateo. That's his track. Check his stuff out, he's really good too.

His mixtape...

(No bass drum on the mixtape version so it kinda sucks

I haven't even listened to the Collection cuz I'm still bumping nostalgia, ULTRA at least 3x a day (along with The Weeknd).
