its not that serious i'm sure...

Message board recruitment is mainly through member's word of mouth.
I'm sure it's not that serious but excluding an entire demographic because their board may be seen as uninviting to female members has entered their mind. Probably.

I wasn't talking business necessarily in the form of personal profits. NT donates money. Where does that capital come from? More members = more money to donate.

Nt'ers always whine about how !##%!+ Yuku is and moving. Where will that capital come from?

More traffic.

Everyone wants to grow bigger. It's natural. One glaring deficit in NT's membership is clearly the female demographic. Increasing membership on the male side is a lost cause. Only females are left.

I'm sure this has entered at least some mods minds. Or at least the ones that deal with the boards finances.

No lie, I stopped using the word "gay" in public to describe stupid stuff after I started posting on NT.

Honestly, why would they give a $%%* at the end of the day if they didn't care about NT having a rep of being  misogynistic (even though it's all jokes). It's a male dominated board as it is.  i don't see any other reason but trying to get more female members.
So, to sum up, you seem to think the only reason people ever do anything is out of greed?
Has it ever occurred to you that we might be doing this because we believe it's the right thing to do?  That has nothing to do with business.
To date, I haven't made a penny off of NikeTalk.  It's only cost me money.  What we do bring in goes to charity.  If nothing mattered other than fund-raising, we'd be the ones bending over backwards to shill for corporate sponsors.  We'd be the ones with our own monthly picture books/catalogs.  For over five years, we entirely ran ad free and incurred nothing but financial losses.  What was that?  An extended product roll-out?

Go run through our rules and tell me why we prohibit things that would arguably result in traffic increases if permitted.  We've prohibited sexist comments from day ONE.  A reminder was issued simply because the problem was getting worse.  We're tired of cleaning up the infantile sexist, heterosexist, and racist garbage that spills over from other websites.  Perhaps we don't want to waste our time moderating a forum that we ourselves would be ashamed to visit.

The rule reminder re: sexist jokes has been up for months, by the way.  Today's NFL games haven't been great, but are they really so boring that you guys need to invent a "controversy" for entertainment?

That would be me.  The revenue increase will be generated by better advertising, but in the short run the technical improvements (hosting & features) stem from Yuku's new ownership and will NOT require the setup costs associated with other products.  This isn't an attempt at pandering and if you think the best or only reason to give a damn about sexism (or heterosexism) is a financial one then, frankly, I feel sorry for you.

There are  other  "right things to do" that aren't done in other cases so I don't see how that argument really works. Unless double standards are in order, which some NT mods have admitted to. Are double standards "the right thing to do"? It can be a combination of factors. Sometimes "the right thing to do" also carries with it a  self interest. Ain't nothing wrong with that.

If you got any color on you, that site is not the business.

I know exactly what Stormfront is. I troll the admins with private messages and emails of interracial porn pics whenever I have free time

That is seriously and without exaggeration one of the best compliments about the site I can remember.  Thanks for that.

The "argument" works because, of the two of us, only one has any direct knowledge of the inner workings of NikeTalk and the motives behind its policies.  Rather than expect you to take me purely at my word, because I realize how impossibly cynical some people are, I've backed it up by our track record.  So, again, explain to me how running the site ad free with a policy that forbade sexist and heterosexist comments for over five years was being done for profit.  You're claiming it's about self-interest, yet the policy predated even our first charitable donation.  At that time - we didn't even list with search engines or the Yuku forum directory and we went out of our way NOT to be SEO friendly.  The more popular the site was, the more money it cost us - and we were STILL prohibiting sexist comments.

If you're going to make an allegation like that, which takes a shot at our integrity, I'd have hoped you'd take it a little more seriously - because that's not "just jokes."  You should know better than that.

I'm disappointed enough that you just took the OP's claim at pure face value with zero scrutiny or independent thought.  This is just making matters worse.  We've had this policy in place from day one and we've been enforcing it ever since.  The reminder was added months ago and never seemed to be an issue until people became bored on a Sunday.

There's a reason why the sort of "locker room talk" you described generally doesn't fly around female coworkers.  It makes the workplace less welcoming for women.  There's pressure to just be "one of the guys" and roll with the punches, because to do otherwise would be even more uncomfortable, but that only reinforces just how oppressive those conditions truly are.  The fact that you, as a male, don't think sexist humor is a problem doesn't exactly carry a whole lot of weight.  It's like the Stormfront folks and/or Rush Limbaugh claiming "ah, it's all in good fun.  I'M not offended - and that's all that really matters."

For those of us who started NikeTalk, we came from forums where racists would routinely come in and post flagrant White supremacist stuff on a fairly regular basis.  You can try to ignore it, but there's no question that it brings down the atmosphere.  It was very important to us, from the outset, that everyone feel welcome on our forums.  It wasn't our goal just to create a forum for straight males of all races.  We wanted all members, regardless of background, to treat each other with respect - and sexist jokes are by nature disrespectful.  That is the origin of the policy and, frankly, I think as someone who helped draft that policy I would know.

I'd just like the personally thank the Niketalk staff for bring our board back to workability. A lot of administrators behind-the-scenes on other boards might have just waved the white flag and given up, but not here. For almost 6 months now, the site has been running about as smooth as I've ever seen.

Petty complaints about what rules are being enforced and what rules aren't are really worth your time? If it really is that big of deal (it shouldn't be), then make your own message board. This is a non-profit community where the mods don't make themselves bigger than rest of us. They're volunteering their time without receiving a dime. Then you go and complain that they're not enforcing the rules hard enough? The ironic part is that most usually complain that they're too hard on posters.
laugh.gif

So yeah, I'd like to just say thanks to the staff, and that's without a request tied along with it
