I'd be willing to bet that 50% of the people who are currently unemployed aren't trying to get a job with many of them falling victim to frictional unemployment ... when you speak of "real" unemployment rate you are referring to a bunch of the population who "feel" underemployed ... and it's around 17% last time i checked ...Originally Posted by cguy610
Dude, unemployment is like half of your salary. How many people do you know that can live comfortable on half of their pay. Not only that, the amount of unemployment you receive over $2,400 is taxed.
The real unemployment rate is almost 20%, which means 1 out of every 5-6 people are unemployed. I just don't believe that 1out of 5-6 people are lazy and enjoy living on half of their original salary.
my theory is that the extra 7% in the underemployed category are those workers who have actually tried to get off unemployment and feel something is better than nothing ... again, i feel there are jobs which can be filled for about half of the 9.8% ...
