very quick blu ray question

listen to me

chances are your tv has a aspect ratio of 1:85:1 and the blu ray u got has a ratio of something like 2:40:1 which means no matter what it goin to havebars BUYA BLU RAY THAT HAS A 1:85:1 CONTRAST RATIO AND U WONT HAVE BARS

and if it it showing in 480p there has to be something messed up with your settings

300 was filmed in 2.4:1.
on a 16:9 aspect ratio HDTV, it will not fill the entire screen without using the zoom option, which will distort the image.

if you want a movie that fills the entire screen without the bars, look for something filmed in 1.85:1.

there are several other aspect ratios that will fill the entire screen, but 1.85:1 is the most common.
At least somebody said it. Most comedies are going to be "full screen" on your HDTV because of how they're shot. Action movies, etcare usually going to be 16:9.

300 isn't going to be demo material with the grain and all, but the picture is still good.

You figure it out yet?

He's partially right, it's aspect ratio not contrast ratio. When the movie is filmed in 2.40:1 or even 2.35:1 AR, you're gonna have black bars onyour hdtv. You're saying cinemax hd looks better than blu-ray, it depends on the disc. 300 is pretty damn grainy and its intentional, and its even moredefined on the blu-ray version, I thought it looked great. Try out the plethora of other titles out there that's available and you are pretty misinformedtoo. ARe you even sure its 480p or you're just saying that because of the black bars? Cause if you are, it has nothing to do with that.

I get most of mine from amazon.com. The Fast and The Furious is $21.49 on there.

at the contrast ratio comment.

You can still get 1080p without an HDMI cable. See: Xbox360
Contrast Ratio is the difference from black to white in your colors. Higher number generally means deeper color but should only be compared within brands asthere is no standard for where these numbers come from

Crank, unhook everything and hook it back up. Check your tv's settings too cause something has to be messed up. 300 is an amazing blu-ray once you get itgoing

That is normal. The problem Crank has is that it's displaying the picture in 480p only. It should still be 1080p...black bars or not.
but it sounds like he is trying to say that having the black bars on the top and bottom make the HDTV 480p

but yeah i would try to reset the TV and Blue Ray Player and GO fix the settings on both

alright Ill try unplugging everything again, I havent messed with the settings, all I am saying is when I watch 300 it has black bars on the bottom and top, when I hit the "display" button on the blu ray controller, it says its showing in 480i

1. The black bars at the top and bottom have nothing to do with anything but the aspect ratio of the movie. You can't change that (unless you zoom in onthe image, which will cut off the picture on the sides and top)
2. Go to imput settings on your menu, make sure HDMI is the source broadcasting, then change the output to 1080p. The image should refresh and you'll havea 1080p picture on your screen via HDMI
3. dont ever pay $40 for an HDMI cable ever again. buy from amazon or monoprice.com.
4. 300 is not reference quality picture, and has a lot of artificial grain. Don't use that to judge your critique of blu-ray.

Yep, yep.

Is it seriously that hard?
Yes. And that's what she said.

lol wow... most blu rays are gonna have that. Almost all i have watched have been widescreen like that.

40 bucks for a sony hdmi cable was considered a deal for me, the guy at best buy almost made me pay 79$ for one
smh.gif

And I dont have the patience to wait for a cable to be shipped to me even if its cheap

I admit that I dunno the difference with different HDMI cables, but besides the prices at Monoprice...when I saw this in the Fry's ad Friday, I just SMH...

HDMI is HDMI. It's a digital cable so there's no difference from one to another unless you're looking for a cable longer than 20'

The only difference is the HDMI profiles, which the norm ATM is 1.3 but 1.4 is starting to come out soon I believe.

i've got a PS3 and an LG BD player, but I've always been under the assumption that all current sony media players as well as TVs have the XMB as theirmenu.

This might help...

alright that sorta helped, I found out I have to stop the movie and go to the sony menu thing, Im messing around with the setting, found video output, chosehdmi, then chose 1080p, I was sure this would solve everything, but its still showing with the black bars

this is stupid man

wait anyone else with 300 on blu ray? Im convinced that this movie is shown with the black bars either way, can anyone confirm this

its just stupid that a cinemax showing of 300 fills the whole screen and looks better than a 280 dollar blu ray player, thats madness

What you're seeing on cinemax is not the full picture, there are pieces of the picture that are being cut out to make it full screen. Doyourself a favor an return the blu ray player and HD tv. Pick up a VHS player and SD TV and enjoy your full screen, low res movies.
