very quick blu ray question

this is what Im getting, the picture looks great but Im getting black bars

so every single blu ray movie out has black bars? black bars is not the truth, it annoys the crap out of me to be honest, so much wasted space

for the most part unless a physical disc version of a movie u purchase is FULL SCREEN then the picture on ur TV will have the "blackbars" thats just the way it is guy, sorry

its not wasted space, its the ratios that are not completely syncing up. it all depends on what ratio the movie was originally filmed in.

Are you kidding me?

It depends on the film that was used in shooting and what the DIRECTOR wants it to look like on your TV... if they wanted it to be 16:9 (which fits almost allHDTVs) then they would have made it that way.

They wanted it to be in that aspect ratio therefor thats what you are seeing. It is what it is, accept it. Its not going to change for you.

it depends on which, if any (im no expert on exactly which ones) come in FULL SCREEN

try looking at the back of the actual movie n see what it is presented in, each one should tell you the aspect ratio like 16:9 wide screen, etc

I'm looking at the reviews of 300 on Bluray.com and the screenshots on both versions have the black bars...

Crank when the picture is stretched to full screen it distorts the picture. Almost all movies are shot in widescreen to show you every visible part of thepicture. Your tv itself should have a zoom option so you're able to get rid of the bars but it won't look as good as it would otherwise.

i've already answered this.

movies filmed in 1.85:1 will fill the entire screen.

your HDTV is a 16:9 aspect ratio. to determine which movies will fill the entire screen, multiply the first number by 9.

example:

1.85 x 9 = 16.65
16.65 is roughly equal to 16
the 16.65 will fill your 16:9 HDTV.

300 is filmed in 2.4:1

2.4 x 9 = 21.6

21.6 > 16

therefore, this will have the widescreen bars.

when you say "so much wasted space", you're totally wrong. there is absolutely no wasted space. the image is being shown in the native format, asit was intended.
if you fill the screen, then you will lose the edges of the image, and the picture will be distored to fill your screen.

you gotta be kidding me

The black bars are resultant from the dimensions of your screen not syncing up with the aspect ratio of the movie. there is nothing bad about blakc bars atall. if anything, theyre helpful. They keep the directors vision in the scope of the film.
Remember that prompt on VHS movies: "This film has been modified from the original version to fit your screen?" That's image cropping, and cutsoff sides and the top of the movie. You're doing yourself a diservice by passing the black bars off.
However, if you dont want the bars and insist on watching movies without them, you have to go with movies filmed with the aspect ratios of 1.78:1 or 1.85:1,since no full-screen blu-rays exist.

1.78:1 is the other film format that fills the screen.

1.78 x 9 = 16.02
16.02 is roughly equal to 16.

1.85:1 and 1.78:1

so, if you want movies that fill your screen, those are the only two that will do it.

there is 2 versions of 300 on blu-ray, movie was shot in Aspect ratio: 2.40:1, dunno if both have the same quality picture

if you want full screen, you will have black bars on the sides (left/right)

if you want to watch movies with no black bars look for the ones that are shot in 1.85:1

superbad was shot in 1.85:1 so your good to go on that

i just watched My Bloody Valentine on Blue Ray and it had no black bars the movie filled the entire screen on my HDTV, last night i watched The Day The EarthStood Still it had the black bars up and down.. hope u get it what i am saying.

as mentioned some do and some don't, just look at the back of your BR Disc box
