ordered this from Rough Trade April 19th, finally showed up May 8th. Really excited to listen to this, as he’s never done a studio version of “You Don’t Miss Your Water” cover of William Bell(Also was an Otis Redding version more people might be familiar with)

I’ve never really delved into Jimi Hendrix, and this was put out by Jack White’s Third Man Records as a special vault membership release, so I figured it would be a good way to explore his work.

How’s the new Black Keys album? I used to be a big fan and haven’t tuned in since Turn Blue… I felt like some of their stuff just started to all sound too similar.

Rubber Factory >>>

I fell off with the Black Keys too lol Their recent stuff been meh

Turn Blue is also where I kinda punched out on The Black Keys. Sounded like they were riding that retro-psychedelic wave that was taking over. Still a few good tracks on there but they are at this best when they embrace the grit. This is the one for me…

I felt like Turn Blue they were evolving their sound.

bonde111 bonde111 are you a member of Jack Whites vault thing? How does it work. I haven’t kept up with it in a long time. Jack White is another artist I haven’t kept up with his albums, although I do have a decent amount of his solos and the White Stripes on vinyl. Used to really enjoy them.

Brothers is still a classic Black Keys album also btw

I am a member. It’s a very good model for the fans. Third Man Records announces what the quarterly release is going to be in full detail, and you decide whether or not to get the release before the specified closing date.

If you don’t want that release, you just unsubscribe, and if then the next release you decide you want it, you just resub before the closing date.

Third Man essentially manufactures the volume of “memberships” for each release, and a few extras in case of damage, etc.

Jack White is an artist that I’ve listened to off and on ever since the early days of The White Stripes. Dude is super talented, and although I haven’t kept up with all of his solo/other bands work completely, his latest album “No Name” is a top notch album.

The Black Keys is one of my most listened to bands. Their new release “Peaches” is a great interpretation of various old-ish blues songs, similar to their 2021 album “Delta Kream”

I really need to catalog my vinyl collection through Discogs.

I don’t fault artists for exploring new things. I just feel like they decided to explore that sound right around Tame Impala’s rise and the psychedelic revival.

And I must be the only person that didn’t like Brothers 🤷🏽‍♂️
Sorry for the back to back posts, I didn’t see there was more TBK discussion.

Turn Blue was a great album. I wouldn’t compare it to Tame Impala’s Lonerism IMO. Sure, it has a sprinkle of “psych rock” but two totally different sounding albums. Tame went all in with it on Lonerism & Currents.

Their first 5 release definitely were very gritty sounding, very lofi garage rock.

Attack & Release was a bit of experimental album with having Danger Mouse add his influences blending with their rock vibe.

Their album “Brothers” was a turning point in their career. It fused some of their past work with a lot of new sounds & more approachable sound.

Ohio Players & No Rain No Flowers were their weakest releases to date.

Ohio Players was a mash up of a lot of their previous work, and had some decent songs, but felt kinda rushed and a mishmash of ideas that didn’t feel cohesive. “I Forgot to be your Lover” was a standout for me.

With all of that said, I very much appreciate Dan & Pat for trying new sounds and messing around with their craft. It doesn’t always work, but as long as they enjoy what they are doing in the studio and putting out, ultimately it’s their choice & their art.

I’m glad that they haven’t lost touch with what makes them great, and what past(and present) music has influenced them.

s0lefunk s0lefunk , what didn’t you like about Brothers?

*Edit* I just read your reply about what you didn’t like with Brothers. My bad for not fully reading everything above.

bonde111 bonde111 I don’t hate Turn Blue but its just not the sound that drew me into TBK. First album of theirs I heard was Attack & Release because of the Danger Mouse involvement. Loved Gnarls Barkley, The Grey Album was interesting, and I thought the album title was cool. I was strictly rap in my teens but Attack & Release had some elements that intrigued me.

Explored their back catalogue and Magic Potion and Rubber Factory embodied a gritty rock sound I didn’t know I’d like on the low. DD172 and the BlakRoc project came out around the time I was getting into their music too.

Brothers sounded like a departure from what I liked from them. It was softer, a little more polish, wider reaching and less angst. It sounded nothing like their early albums I enjoyed. I liked El Camino a bit more but then Turn Blue just confirmed for me they were exploring different sounds. Not saying any of them are bad albums. Just not for me.

Didn’t Dan and Pat have a falling out for a bit? I swear I remember that.

And speaking of El Camino… Little Black Submarines is the one. That song live was amazing.
