What does "Unsigned Hype" mean nowadays?

Just wondering, because my boy is in Unsigned Hype in this months' Source

I know back in the day, it was a BIG thing to see someone in The Source "Unsigned Hype" and speculate where they'd sign, etc. But nowadays, Ijust don't know the hype around it.

Nothing. The majority of new rappers that have a buzz now are above the whole unsigned hype even tho they're unsigned. Dudes who fall in that category arestill on the come up and don't have any internet recognition.

Hip Hop mags are dead btw. None of them have credibility anymore
