What's today's hip hop message?

I remember back in the day, the main thesis in hip hop was "not going pop"

There were so many songs with same message that hip hop is not pop.

For example,

Tribe - Check the Rhyme ("rap is not pop if you call it that then stop")
De La Soul - Buhloone Mind State Intro ("It might blow up but it won't go pop")
3rd Bass - Pop Goes the Wiesel, Gas Face
EPMD - Crossover

......and so many others

Artists were so concerned about Rap not becoming a pop music sub-genre, which mainstream rap has become today.

So what do you think, if any, is today's main theme/message in hip hop?

It seems it's more about "get your money at all costs" these days.

Shhh is in shambles now B. Aint no theme or message.

Right now dudes should get focused on making good music before they try to package it with a message that'll have any worth.

That statemnt mix with the artist mentioned is a hypocricy on so many levels. How can u go sign over ur rights creativity culture etc 2 a recordcompany/label then say Um im giving u a percentage of what a make in hopes u distribute widen my fan base. Then rap and say i hope this music doesnt getpopular. If ppl wanted it to remain to its origins and have control say so over there music and culture then why would u sell it or pay some1 to guild dictateur career.

Whatever the radio/ "bloggers"/ and so called opinionated rappers tell you something is hot, its hot (even if it's trash)

Rap is so fake now. Ill be damn to believe any rapper that breathes on 'a' microphone.

i remember what some OG told me...the realest %!+#!@ in the street never make it to rapping.

Ill never buy another hip-hop rap album for the rest of my life. DOWNLOAD ftw

Dudes were always fake, there was never one themed message in hip-hop. Just listen to who you like, and forget the other clowns.

did you honestly think rap music would not get popular ?

if you did please just stop listening to music all together

rap was going to go mainstream any way, just because some afro centric mc said hiphop wouldnt go mainstream it would be underground...the hell out ofhere.....i'm pretty sure that white people have bought more cds than black people...the +*%! was destine to go mainstream

message wise....money...thats what folks want and thats what people want to hear about I guess ...getting money, making money, taking money, spendingmoney.....

I just think each decade hiphop talks about something new.......black oppression.....gangsta rapper, dance music, trap music

Worship money.
Get money by any means.
Kill for it.
Steal for it.

Have sex with only dimes.
Have no respect for women you have sex with.

Drugs are ok.

It's acceptable and encouraged to destroy your neighborhood.
Getting an education means you're not an authentic street !##+*.

Only care about yourself.
Buy a new car for every season.

The more diamonds you have on your person/own, the more respect you'll get.

Selling cocaine is a good and easy way to make a living.

Only your enemies and close friends/can or will die from the street life.

If a little blood gets on your kid's shirt from you killing another human being in front of them, it's not a scarring event. Just wipe the blood off.

All you have to do is work hard and you can be on a yacht in France with models. No luck or connections needed. You won't have to back stab either.

Life's a movie and you're the action hero.

Don't think, just shoot. Resolving issues is for punks.

Make money and life life to the fullest. Basically have fun and M.O.B., but then they say that it's alright to trick.
