This. They need to raise that minimum wage, just off of the fact that the role of government isn't to subsidize low wages through tax credits, food stamps, medicaid, etc. If you work full time, you should get paid a living wage and not have government make up the difference so that you have a "living wage".

What is a "living wage" though? I know people pulling in $100,000/yr. and still outspend what they make. Heck, in college, I was making about $1000/mo. and was still making ends meet. If someone takes a minimum wage job knowing that they can't make ends meet on that wage for an extended period of time, that's their fault. No matter how high we make the minimum wage, there will always be a certain percentage of people that will complain that they aren't making enough.

A living wage has nothing to do with how a person chooses to spend their money. So, people that outspend a $100K salary is irrelevant.

So then what exactly IS a living wage?

Here is the definition of a living wage.

No, I know what the dictionary definition of a living wage is. My point is, how much is a living wage in actual dollars? What formula do you use? In every city, there is a different price for housing depending on which neighborhood you are in. The cost of gas depends on which street corner you fill up on. Do we need to factor in how far your job is and the cost of your commute into how much we demand the employer to pay too? Should we also have them ask you about any illnesses, number of children, and other personal information too? See where I'm going with this? A "living wage" is simply political propaganda used to insinuate that there is an actual dollar value that can apply to everyone and every situation imaginable. The bottom line here is that we are intelligent beings that should be able to make responsible decisions for ourselves. If a job doesn't pay enough to live on, it is our responsibility to obtain new skills that will make us more valuable in the marketplace.
