Where did the word 'baller' come from?

How did this slang term come to fruition? Does it have some kind of root or did somebody just make it up? Does it actually mean something, or is it just a termthat is now synonymous with 'madd cheddah' .

A thug that has "made it" to the big time. Originally refered ball players that made it out of the streets to make millions as a pro ball player, but now is used to describe any thug that is living large.

Pain is a part of the game when you're a baller.

1. A person who plays, and is very successful in basketball.
2. A person who finds success and wealth. The source of income is usually unknown by others, but can tell wealth by the "baller's" attire and usually cocky attitude.

Did you see that baller who just sped by in that 'vette?

Anyone who plays professional sports in the U.S. is wealthy or payed more than the average citizen and all they do is sports and things that the averagecitizen does for recreation. So if you're a basket-baller, foot-baller, etc...you're getting payed more than most to entertain us watching you do whatwe do for fun, just way better. If it didn't come from that, then I'm clueless.

N's been sayin' the slang word "baller" since the mid to late '80's...

I started payin attention to it in the '90's when Menace II Society came out... (Drive Thru RobberyScene)
