Get the air. Its more portable and there are NO MOVING PARTS inside.   Which means if she drops it, or it falls, it is less likely to break.

It has a SSD which are lightning quick.  And the sizes, apart from the entry level 64 gb, are great.....128GB, 250gb.

It does everything you need the computer to do. You will need to buy the Superdrive ($75) to play CD's or Movies, but who does that anyways (lol).

AND ITS CHEAPER THAN THE MACBOOK PRO.  Your girl will not know the difference or ever see the difference with a i7 core or a dedicated graphics processor that the $2000 Pro gives you.   Get the 13 inch Air that is $1299 and save yourself some money.

Back it up with Time Machine before you restore your Mac.
You can keep your iTunes library by saving your current iTunes libarry file.

Check out this link for more info.

My charger stopped working after about 18 months of use.
Since I had applecare, I got a new one sent in about 2 days.

he's talking about the current 2011 models that are already out.
the light form factor and ssd are why i would choose it over the mbp unless OP is going to be doing things that require better hardware.

The 2011 MacBook Air is just beautiful.
I'm going to sell my MacBook Pro to get this. Everything is right with the MBP, but I want something lighter; haven't used much cds/dvds and is going to buy an external hdd anyway for more storage.

The features of the MacBook Air are so damn appealing. The 'slim' represents new technology, and what they'll be putting out more of in the future.

I have a black 13in MB that I got just a little over 3 years ago. I almost got a 15in but to me the screen is too big to be as portable as I wanted it to be. Specs on the 13in MBP are plenty for a normal user so that's what I'd go with.

Like someone said a bit ago, this thing changed my life

I haven't had 1 negative issue with this computer at all and after 1109 cycles my battery still has 90% charge

for the most part i am pretty anti apple but certain macs are worth the price since they are not equipped ancient core 2 duos anymore
i suggest you check out what they have in the refurbished section, they are a lot cheaper and are basically brand new with warranty covered and everything.

and it all depends on the purpose of you getting a laptop. I assume portability?

if you have to get a MBA, the 13 inch is a must..cost $1300 brand new and $1100 refurbished. The 11 inch MBA is too weak in CPU power and battery life is bad.
the cheapest MBP 13" refurbished is $929 and it is faster, cheaper and more future proof

i recommend 13" mbp. for around 1k after taxes you have a pretty decent machine...and its cheaper
i dont recommend mba because they are not future proof, they essentially become obsolete within a year and you cant upgrade them.
If you get a 2gb ram mba, you will be stuck with 2gb forever and to me 2gb of ram in 2011 is unacceptable.
there are 4gb mba but they are more expensive. doesnt justify the premium you pay because ram is cheap as hell these days
and of course the mba is slower than the mbp. if you want an ssd you can buy your own ssd and install in the mbp.
if you already have an ipad, you have even less reasons to get a mba

I'm looking at a 13" Macbook Pro for college.

i5, 4GB ram and eventually I want to take out the superdrive and get an SSD. SSD prices are

HYPE KILLS!

It's the best computer i've ever owned and I love the OS, coming from a life long windows user.

It meets my standards and i wouldn't choose another computer if i could go back in time.

so the hype lives up for me anyways

Still contemplating, whether I should get the 13" or 15". I feel that the 15" would be a little big for my taste and 13" would suit me fine, since I have a 27" iMac. Not really sold on a Macbook Air...

i just got my first mac, macbook pro....but for a new laptop i'm surprised how hot it gets, is this normal?
