Why is listing an athletes correct height impossible to do?

So and so will be make an amazing play and some announcer will be like that was incredible for a 6 foot 2 inch guy then someone will be like...no way hes listed THAT tall...hes 5"6 at BEST.

I don't think Iverson is that far off. I'm almost 5'11" and I stood right next to him and he was a little bit taller than me.

Still surprised Wade is only 6'4. His crazy wingspan and vertical leap makes it seem like he's taller because on the court, he just looks taller than Kidd but they are legitimately the same height.
