Why is listing an athletes correct height impossible to do?

Why measure with shoes off when they are going to be playing in shoes.

The thing that gets me is Kobe was listed at 6-7 for like the first 6 years of his carerr now he is 6-6? (Maybe it was the bush?)

Because at least with shoes off you're measuring a constant. ASG's might give you an 1" but another pair of shoes might only give you .5"
Maybe it's because he's so lanky but Steph Curry looks taller than 6'3 in street clothes when he's not standing next to giants.

 Dude was on his way to being the league's top 5 players. Still watch highlights of all his game winners and buzzer beaters. Very impressive for a guy who's actually only about 6 feet or 6'1, despite being listed at around 6'3 or 6'4.
