David Starr is going to be at the next show on Portland in January... Hopefully I can get rid of more brownies ...

Looks like a missed a really good show last night :frown:...

Of course I hate it..War Games was such a simple concept and Vince has to go and screw it up by making more complicated..I honestly don't even know if I'm gonna watch it..
He has to make a WWE version of War Games. He can't copy their exact rules, or else they'd win! (even though NOBODY cares anymore but Vince)

I've honestly only seen a couple of his matches... But he reminds me so much of Takeshi Morishima... Can't wait to see more...

I can see the similarities there...I'd say WALTER's style is a bit more simplistic, but not in a bad way

Probably #1 on my fave five right now

Came across this vid of Naito's fall and rise after watching the NJPW vid.

Pretty good.

This guide is mostly aimed at people who have either never seen or are very new to NJPW and will try to give all the basic details you will need to watch NJPW’s next big show, Power Struggle on Sunday 5th November.

Title:

  • IWGP Heavyweight Championship - Kazuchika Okada - This the top prize in NJPW and will not be defended on sunday’s show. The champion is over 500 days into his title reign making him the longest reigning IWGP Heavyweight Champion in the belt’s 30 year history. The belt is so prestigious only 4 men have held the title since January 4th 2011.

  • IWGP Intercontinental Championship - Hiroshi Tanahashi - Often referred to as a 1b title rather than a secondary title, despite only being 6 or so years old it is extremely prestigious thanks mostly to the work of Shinsuke Nakamura. It is not uncommon to see it headline shows and it will headline this sunday’s show with CWC semi-finalist and known lunatic Kota Ibushi challenging.

  • IWGP US Heavyweight Championship - Kenny Omega - This belt is just a few months old, a tournament to create it being held on a recent NJPW american tour. Omega is the inaugural champion and will defend his title against (Trent) Beretta at Power Struggle.

  • NEVER Openweight Championship - Minoru Suzuki - Initially a belt for up and coming talent it is now for the most part a mid card title. It will be defended on sunday against Yano Toru in a bull rope match.

  • IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship - Killer Elite Squad (Davey Boy Smith Jr & Lance Archer) - Tag titles for heavyweight wrestlers, will not be defend on sunday.

  • IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship - Will Ospreay - Top prize for those under 220lbs~. Will be defended on sunday against Marty Scurll in Ospreay’s first title defence.

  • IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship - Roppongi 3K (SHO & YOH) - Tag titles for those under 220lbs. The titles are not defended this sunday but Roppongi 3K will compete in the final of the Super Jr Tag Tournament against Super 69 (Ryusuke Taguchi + ACH).

  • NEVER Openweight 6-man Tag Team Championship - Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI, SANADA & EVIL) - Relatively unimportant titles competed for in trios matches. Mostly used to help further or fill space in other feuds. Not defended on Sunday.

  • G1 Climax Briefcase - Tetsuya Naito - While not technically a championship, the winner of the G1 Climax (New Japan’s biggest annual tournament) gets this briefcase entitling them to a IWGP Heavyweight title shot at NJPW’s January 4th super show WrestleKingdom and it is defended as a championship in between. It will not be defended on Sunday or at any point before January 4th now however.

Factions:

NJPW loves factions and in some way shape or form every member of NJPW’s roster falls into a faction. I won’t give a complete summary of every wrestler, in every faction but I’ll talk about who you can expect to see on Sunday and maybe a couple other important people.

CHAOS:

Somewhat a tweener faction, CHAOS has lent to the babyface side mostly since Okada became the Ace of the company at 2016 4th January show.

  • Kazuchika Okada - Company ace and arguably the best wrestler on the planet. He is 500 days into a historic IWGP Heavyweight Title reign. Over the past year and a half Okada has been putting on classic match after classic match with the Heavyweight title on the line and during the G1 Climax including 3 matches with Kenny Omega getting more than 5* from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer. To understand his rise to Ace over the past 5 years here is a pair of videos about his incredible 4 year long feud with Hiroshi Tanahashi courtesy of Showbuckle - -

  • Beretta - More commonly known in the US as Trent? Or Trent Beretta, Beretta until recently was part of a junior heavyweight tag team with Rocky Romero called Roppongi Vice. He recently moved to the Heavyweight division and has challenged Omega for a match for the US Title this Sunday

  • Hirooki Goto - Has a 0-9 record in Heavyweight Title matches and is what i would call the 2b guy in Chaos, last year he was the gate keeper for Okada but his role has diminished somewhat his year..

  • Tomohiro Ishii - The nickname "Stone Pitbull" is extremely fitting for Ishii, He has the face of a pitbull and is extremely stiff in the ring. This high Impact Style has lead to him having 3 Meltzer rated 5* matches. Ishii is the 2a Chaos Heavyweight, and has been Okada’s gatekeeper all year having two great trilogies with Omega and Naito. You can learn more about Ishii and the “gatekeeper” role here

  • Will Ospreay - Current junior heavyweight champion and one of the best British wrestlers going and at an incredibly young age could be a long term star for New Japan providing he isn't poached by WWE at any point or injures himself seriously with his ridiculously fast paced style. If you want flippy ****, he's your guy.

  • Roppongi 3K- Junior Heavyweight Tag Champs. They’re the successors to Roppongi Vice, made up of recently returning rookies SHO (Sho Tanaka) and YOH (Yohei Kamatsu) both were pegged for amazing things while “Young Lions” and they’ve started off well from their return. They are managed by Rocky Romero.

  • Toru Yano - Comedy wrestler who wins with a low blow into a school boy. He yells BREAK a lot and tries to sell his DVDs, he's fantastic trust me. He challenges Minoru Suzuki on sunday.

  • Gedo - On screen is a legend of NJPW who manages Okada and occasionally wrestles, behind the scenes he books the show and is responsible for a slight westernisation in New Japan's storytelling in the past few years.

  • YOSHI-HASHI - Mostly the pin eater for the Heavyweight CHAOS tag matches, he is fulfilling an underdog role in the company. Most recently main-eventing ROH Chicago against Kenny Omega. He was also given the nickname Tacos by Nakamura after his excursion in CMLL.

Bullet Club:

Bullet Club is a typical Western style heel faction formed by Prince Devitt (Finn Balor) which consists of a majority of the "Gaijins" (non-Japanese talent) in the company and is now lead by Kenny Omega.

Members of Note:

  • Kenny Omega - First western winner of the G1 Climax and Main Evented Wrestle Kingdom 11 against Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Title in a 6* match. He is one of the top workers in the world and is like an anime villain come to life in his mannerisms.

  • The Young Bucks - They Superkick and sell merch, you probably know who they are.
The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega refer to themselves as a trio as "The Elite"

  • Marty Scurll - “The Villain” entered NJPW earlier this year into the Junior division. He’s recently had a great run with the ROH TV title and along with Will Ospreay and ZSJ has been at the forefront of the BritWres explosion. He challenges Ospreay at Power Struggle.

  • Bad Luck Fale - Former Intercontinental Champion. He is a typical big guy who has big wins to his name such as clean wins over Hiroshi Tanahashi.

  • Yujiro Takahashi - Formerly a member of Chaos, he left them for Bullet Club and was there only Japanese talent. He is often there nowadays though to eat pins but his "Tokyo Pimp" Persona makes him the best guy in the company because hot Japanese girls. (nsfw)

  • Cody (Rhodes) – Now dubbed “The America Nightmare” he is the ROH World Champion and arguably the hottest commodity on the independent scene.

  • Chase Owens - Bullet Club’s pin eater. Solid worker but nothing special (which for his role makes him perfect).
Los Ingobernables de Japon:

Following Naito losing his main event spot at WrestleKingdom 8 to the IC title match Naito had a change in attitude and cared less and less for the fans. After spending time in CMLL and being a part of Los Ingobernables he returned to Japan and started a branch of the faction in New Japan.

Members:

  • Tetsuya Naito - Pretty much explained above. But he's brash and disrespectful to everything and some have even said represents the Japanese people who are frustrated with their culture and falling economy. Despite his disrespect and disregard for titles and the fans he is the most over guy in the company. He’s the challenger for the IWGP Heavyweight Title at the Tokyo Dome in January. If you want more information on his character arc check out this video.

  • EVIL - Formerly Takaaki Watanabe is the muscle of LIJ he has a laser pointer in his entrance and carries a scythe, honestly not sure why. Has recently elevated himself to a credible challenger for NJPW’s top prizes having a match with Okada at NJPW’s October show.

  • BUSHI - A well know Welterweight in CMLL and a Junior heavyweight representative of LIJ. He also uses Poison Mist a lot. However has somewhat been lost in the shuffle this year.

  • Sanada - Extremely athletic and talented most NJPW fans have been expecting big things from him since his arrival in April 2016, he is still yet to fully find his place on the New Japan roster but expect big things from him in either 2018 or 2019.

  • Hiromu Takahashi – Formerly known as Kamaitachi, recently returned to NJPW, from his excursions from CMLL and ROH, as the “Time Bomb” and challenged KUSHIDA to a match for his Jr heavy title at the dome. At the World Tag League final he would reveal himself to be a new member of LIJ. He also owns the best jacket in Pro Wrestling, has a pet cat called Darryl and currently is feuding with microphones.
Suzuki-Gun:

Suzuki-Gun are a typical heel faction, constant interfering and the like akin to bullet club. Led by Minoru Suzuki unlike Bullet Club they are made up of both Japanese talent (bullet club do have one japanese wrestler but he refuses to speak japanese) and gaijins.

  • Minoru Suzuki - The leader of Suzuki-Gun and current NEVER Openweight champion, he’s crazy, lethal and terrifying despite being the wrong side of 45. A legend of Japanese wrestling and an accomplished shoot fighter in his day. Naturally, this means he’s in a bull rope match with a comedy wrestler at Power Struggle.
Here is a video on Suzuki -

  • Zack Sabre Jr - A CWC Semi finalist, Zack Sabre Jr has built a reputation of being fantastic at technical wrestling, finding new ways to bend and twist his opponents limbs. He joined Suzuki-Gun earlier this year and has become the No 2 heavyweight in no time, getting wins over the likes of Tanahashi and Ishii.

  • El Desperado - A japanese wrestler who wrestles under a mask after time in CMLL, El Desperado is, atleast in my eyes, top of the pecking order for Suzuki-Gun juniors and is almost always at ringside for big matches involving Suzuki-Gun if he’s not taking part.

  • Taichi - The BEST wrestler on the planet.

  • Taka Michinoku - Best known for his run in the WWE as a member of Kaientai, Taka Michinoku is a veteran presence in Suzuki-Gun. He also helps run a Japanese indie promotion K-Dojo (Kaientai Dojo)

  • Yoshinobu Kanemaru - Best known for his 12 year stay in Pro Wrestling NOAH where he became a decorated champion (7 junior singles and 4 junior tag reigns) you’ll mostly see him teaming with El Desperado.

  • Takashi Iizuka - He’s a dog or something. Hits people with the “Iron Finger” which is a metal cast thing for his right hand.
Taguchi Japan/NJPW Sekigun:

All wrestlers not a part of a faction are part of what is known as NJPW’s Sekigun or Red Army, over the past year or so, Ryusuke Taguchi has created a joke-y faction called Taguchi Japan which mimics a high school sports team. And whoever teams with him becomes a member for the duration of the match atleast.

  • Hiroshi Tanahashi - Hiroshi Tanahashi is the man responsible for pulling NJPW out of the dark days caused by the Inoki-ism era of NJPW in the 2000s, he’s slowly started to move down the card in the past couple years as NJPW start building the next generation of stars but he is the current Intercontinental champion and will main event Power Struggle

  • Kota Ibushi - Best known on here for his run in the Cruiserweight Classic, Kota Ibushi is a lunatic. Despite being one of the best in the world his refusal to settle down to one company has lead to him never really having any major heavyweight singles success in NJPW.

  • KUSHIDA - Has been the Ace and key central point of the junior heavyweight division for the past few years though he recently lost the title to Will Ospreay. Also my personal favourite wrestler, he’s extremely versatile in the ring and always has great matches. Loves back to the Future.

  • Juice Robinson - The former CJ Parker in NXT, Juice went to Japan and has reinvented himself. He is now one of the best underdogs in wrestling and I'm pretty sure a sex icon in Japan at this point.

  • Super 69 (Ryusuke Taguchi and ACH) - Taguchi recently held the Jr Tag titles with Ricochet, after losing them and with Ricochet seeming WWE bound Taguchi found a new partner for the Super Jr Tag tournament in the form of ACH. The two men made it to the final this sunday.

  • Jushin "Thunder" Liger - Arguable the greatest Junior Heavyweight wrestler Jushin Liger has made a name for himself all over the world. He appeared multiple times on WCW televison and was also the Ace of NJPW's Junior division for a really long time.

  • Tiger Mask IV - Although never reaching the heights of other wrestlers to have the legendary Tiger Mask, Tiger Mask IV has had a solid career in NJPW getting 6 Junior Heavyweight championships.

  • Togi Makabe - Despite having the nickname Unchained Gorilla and on the surface looking like a hard as nails man you’d never want to get on the wrong side this former IWGP Heavyweight Champion actually has some semblance of mainstream popularity in Japan because of his food show.

  • David Finlay - Son of Fit Finlay, he recently became a full fledged roster member after being in the NJPW Dojo as a Young Lion.

  • Satoshi Kojima – A stand out of the third Generation and one of the most decorated men in the past 25 years of Puroresu. Leader of #BreadClub and the best Twitter user in wrestling

  • Hiroyoshi Tenzan - Another Legend of NJPW who in recent years has played a miniscule role in the company. He’s done everything there is to do in NJPW.

  • Dragon Lee & Titan - Two of CMLL’s finest who have been teaming together for the Super Jr Tag Tournament. Few men fly better than both these guys.

  • Katsuya Kitamura - A former Olympian hopeful for Amateur wrestling, before a steroid ban made him miss the London Olympic, Kitamura is a young lion (a njpw trainee) who is ripped and has been making a huge impression in his short time in the company.

  • Hirai Kawato - Kawato is another Young Lion and at just 20 years of age is showing the potential of being an all time great Junior Heavyweight. Few have his level of fire and a natural ability to get the crowd behind him like he has shown. He's extremely promising.
