Your gut reaction is correct. Heel tab placement is wrong. It should run parallel to the sock liner, the corner of the tab should not come that close to the sock liner. Fake.

They came in UK half sizes because a 8.5UK = 9US

Should be fine. TTS or half size down in my opinion. I find my pair I went a half size down on to be perfect when I wear thin no show socks.
