Ok so I just got back from a local bar and need some experinced nike talk'ers advice. I am by no means a master of the bar, I go once in awhile but probdon't know all the ettique. So the bar is completly dead, me and my boy go after work didn't get there till like 11:30 and were kinda tired. We ordertwo beers, drafts, and casually drink for 30 mins. Bartender comes over and asks if we want another round, it was 12 by this point, there was litterally 4-5other patrons in the whole place. We say nah just a check and were gonna call it a night. Bartender says nah just stay this is on the house and refills ourglasses. We end up talking to him for like 30 minutes and he seems like a cool dude. It's like 12:45 and the place is getting ready to close, I ask for thecheck and our total was $8.56, he gave us two free. I hand him $15 and say keep it and he gives me the

We get ready to leave say goodbye to another guy we were talking too and thebartender doesn't say goodbye puts his head down when we get up.

So my question is was I being cheap?

Edit: And for those of you that say yes whats an appropriate tip in this situation?
Cliffnotes:
$4 drafts drank 4
Paid for 2, bartender gave two free
Left a $6.44 tip.

Sounds like he was being generous when in reality he was being selfish.

that's the point with some bartenders, you tip them super well, and they'll plug you in on drinks for the whole night...

you should have thrown him a dub. it's a service industry, and he has to cover the drinks that aren't being charged.

so is there like a rule of thumb or something? tip the cost of the drinks and then 20% or just the cost of the drinks? I usually tip 20% I'm not a cheaptipper, most of my jobs have been working for tips. But I've never gotten a free drink before after only ordering one round so I had no idea what the rightthing to do was. I wasn't trying to be cheap... I thought the tip was generous I mean I didn't ask or try to even poke at getting a free drink hebasiclly took my glass and handed me a full beer.

I didn't even know you were supposed to tip the cost of drinks lol.

Me and my boys just tip bartenders like we at a restaurant. 15-20% of the tab.

True story. Bartenders expect a bit sometimes because every now and then they'll get a patron in a generous mood. He probably assumed the OPwould have a 20 and that he would get it all. If he would have offered you top-shelf shots it would be a different story.

Yeah he thought you would have a 20 and give him all of it but that defeats the purpose of getting free drinks.

4 x 4=16 dollars (maybe a 4 dollars tip)
4x2= 8 dollars (hoping for a 12 dollar tip)

I really dont like tipping bartenders especially for beers. If you could get beers out of vending machine people would do it but mixing drinks you have to tipfor that.

exactly. he is basically "stealing" from the bar and expecting you to cover it in the tip. when servers/bartenders let it be known that they arehooking you up, they expect a big tip.

Me too. When I go out, I cop a drink, I tip a single or two. I'm not droppin all my money in a couple drinks. PA has a drink tax and Idon't like cheap liquor so there's my issue. I cop a Grey Goose and Sprite, that's $9+ I'm not tippin $9, I throw $2 and keep it movin til Iorder another.

1st drink tip $20
2nd drink tip $40
3rd drink tip $60
etc.

End of the night kill him or her get your money back & you're still drunk & only 1 person had to die.

always be generous the 1st time around...cuz then u take advantage (no rape) later on

im a bartender and what you did was fair 7 bucks was very good... or he might have thought you were a sucker and would just hand over the 20 at the cost of himgiving u 2 free beers.....
