The Official Anime & Manga Thread Vol: 三

I usually don't disagree with you and I'm happy you explained your reasoning, but this Arc has been great, comedy along with action.

Pretty much, I was gonna type a response to that but it mostly seems like opinionated. Like there's just things he generally doesn't like, not "bad" per say.

I wouldn't consider observations on terrible pacing and poor character development "opinionated"

I think the parts of Dressrosa that were poorly done were:

the moment Ussop ran way from the trebol/sugar fight when Robin was turned to a toy

the cheap way Ussop won that "fight", which was then used as a plot point later, so that Ussop could develop as a character

obviously block D was poorly done mainly because going into it you knew Rebecca would have to win, but you also knew she wasn't strong enough to do it cause she's a trash character, but we only got glimpses of that so that helped

Sugar waking up a 2nd time was unnecessary except for the fact Ussop needed a true sniping feat and development, but since that chapter Oda hasn't really missed

I didn't like the reset after the string clone got its head cut off and Pica threw everyone out of the palace, it seemed excessive, but it set the stage for the bigger battle.

The 3 chapters of running to the flower field were a little much, but at that point, with so many character converged at once you either take it slow or let some readers get lost. Idk if you visit other forums, but people get lost over simple things in series all the time.

Those are the main ones that come to mind.

I don't mind Sabo vs Fujitora being off-paneled because that's how Oda has been with top tiers the entire series just giving us glimpses of them, while he attempts to save their big moments for when Luffy and co. get to them.

Everybody knew the Sunny group vs Big Mom wouldn't come till after Dressrosa was finished, so why even bring it up as an issue? There's already too many characters to give panel time to on the island, so why cut to ones not there?

Sabo, I'd probably have preferred if he had actually been dead, but we got hints the was alive. It seems for the most part the revolutionaries are good at keeping things quiet like people not knowing Dragon was Garp's son and people thinking Kuma was just a pirate and not a revolutionary.

Luffy always makes stupid moves and underestimates his opponents, just because he has to be slowed down. It's not ideal, but its been part of the series since early on, it's not exclusive to this arc.

I don't think Dressrosa is the perfect arc, but I think overall it's been good. There have definitely been some poorly done moments, but there's definitely been a lot more good and great moments and since about chapter 753 Oda seems to completely regained his form and hasn't really missed. After this flashback we should get fights and then closing up all the dangling loose ends. The arc suffers from trying to be overly ambitious, which in turn has slowed the arc down and caused the most problems.

Sorry a bit off topic but I wonder if Blackbeard is actually from the D. clan. He doesnt really portray the same traits we've seen from the rest. He seems very weak willed in his fight against Whitebeard and Luffy. Any chance he may be faking it? I thought a big trait for Ds were not fearing death, he clearly has shown fear of death in the series. I wonder how he ever managed to give Shanks that scar before he got a his devil fruit powers.

Sorry rewatching the marineford arc and was thinking about it.

Trafalgar Law becoming the Itachi of this manga, clearly a character whom the author is in total love with and being given more and more overpowered abilities and ridiculous Gary-Stu characterization every chapter. Oda probably sketches him naked. His flashback is still dope though

He may be faking it, at least I think so too. Or he might be a different type of D. that hasn't been properly explained yet.

Just finished Fate/Zero

wow.

what a great great series, totally redeems Fate/Night (original)
I do wish there was a bit more action, it was very story heavy which is fine. but it seemed out of the 25 eps only maybe 10 had fights

few questions to clear things up in my head please
1. so The holy grail wasn't real or didn't really give the user a wish?
it was a bit confusing that dudes wish didn't get granted.
but the priest dude (archer) said it was his wish or wildest dreams that got answered. .
so they both won???
or was Saber's Masters wish just not possible to do. I didn't get that part.

2. it was said that all the warriors had to be sacrificed to get the wish but question 1 still happened.

3. does this set up Fate / Night better? at least the original story??

1. The Holy Grail was real, but had been tainted before the fourth war, so Emiya decided to destroy it (which he couldn't). It eventually granted Kirei's wish because it deemed him worthy, which was for destruction, hence the fire.

2. I don't remember this too well but Saber did return to her time, and Archer (Gilgamesh) became human.

3. FZ sets up UFOtable version of Fate Stay Night much better. The first episodes already referenced many things from FZ.

Yeah I would definitely call that opinionated. And I never listen to anyone who talks about pacing because 9/10 they read the manga and they wouldn't know about pacing if they just watched the manga. Not really a fair assessment IMO

I dont think he's faking it, I think he just might be an outlier. The only reason I say I don't think he's faking it is because for the most part things surrounding D are a mystery due to the void century, so it'd be strange to just pick up the initial, but there is the chance he knows the meaning of it and that's why he picked it up. He's been around a while, he was at least 16 when he joined WB, and was stated to be strong enough to have been the 2nd division commander for Whitebeard, but he was already plotting and wanted to stay low key so he turned it down, that was also before he got his power. Even when he punched Ace he almost broke his neck, so I don't think the dude was a slouch. Whitebeard stated before he died that Teach was different and didn't possess the same will as other Ds. I think we'll learn a lot when we see his backstory, here he is as a kid.

Decided to check out Freezing. Watched the first 3 episodes. Yo, this anime is way too sexualized. A horny guy was probably watching school girl porn when he created it.

I've started adding slice if life type anime into my normal action oriented rotation. just to change it up a bit.

I watched a few episodes of this new show Your Lie in April on crunchy roll last night. the title makes no sense yet but it's a solid interesting show so far

Watch Barakamon If you haven't already. Best Slice of life anime this year. Naru is so cool. :pimp:

I dropped it for the same reason. It's just perverse and corny to me.

Loved Barakamon :pimp:

Mandom :pimp:

^
Yeah the creepy factor in it is too high. How the hell did it get 2 seasons but Deadman Wonderland only got 1? I know it's based on popularity but damn DW was good to me.

Cosign for Barakamon

Wish more quality slice of life animes would come out, seems like only one series a year comes out that's quality for that genre.

I've started reading Akagi. I like the psychological battle aspect of it, but I'd probably like the story a lot more if I understood how to play Mahjong. It's worth reading if you like high stakes gambling.

That's how I feel about Hikaru no Go, loved the series, but I'm sure I wouldve appreciated it more if i understood the game.

I'll check that out. Does it have psychological battle elements in it? I've been finding myself more interested in that lately than typical action series. I'm waiting for Liar Game to finish so I can read the final arc all at once, at least in Lair Game each game was independent of the next and they had to explain the rules for it.

Also want Detective Conan to ends one of these days so I can read it all the way through instead of just random chapters or searching for chapters that progress the main plot.

Suspenseful in its own way, the matches are pretty intense even without really understanding the game. Great character development and side characters/rivals. The supernatural aspect of it works surprisingly well too. I highly recommend it. I would suggest the anime over the manga. There one short arc that isnt animated that you can read after.

Alright cool. I haven't watched the Akagi anime so I can't say if it's good, but it's only 26 episodes. Akagi himself doesn't have a crazy amount of development he's more or less the same as when he first shows up at 13 just as it progress through the time skips he becomes more subdued and will only take on the biggest gambles rather than any that arrive. It focuses on the stakes being raised in each game he plays, and his strategies change as he becomes more experienced. The whole idea is that he's a genius who descended into darkness so the only thrill in life for him is fighting and super high stakes gambles to a point he either dies either financially or literally, or he can kill his opponent usually financially.
