Official Guitar Players Thread vol. Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

I have an acoustic I got about 4 years ago when I started college. Hit a plateau, well didn't get very high at all lol, got frustrated, and havent played much since. Would really like to pick it back up and learn tho...

i was gonna actually ask how to play some licks like Always & Forever lol, coincidence that you posted a vid in that thread lol.  did you sound it out yourself?  i cant really do that, only basic chords.  i taught my self how to play but for a good portion of that time i didnt have a 6th string so i didnt really play that high up ever.  plus an acoustic doesnt go as high as an electric.
on to another subject....does anyone know how to properly play this part that goes down like 4 chords (0:40 till about 0:48)

a lot of songs use it but i never really tabbed it properly.  i got it down a bit but i know its not perfect cause it sounds better when i use two strings instead of four.

It's good to see a thread like this. Ive been playing bass(acoustic and electric) for about 8 years now.

Sounds like 4 different chords in the song, but i looked at a guitar cover of it and the person I saw didn't play it and it sounded fine?
It sucks that nobody has tabbed it on Ultimate Guitar, yet there are probably 13 different versions of Justin Beibers new song up already.

jbiebs song is only 4 chords. just like every song on the radio lol.

i sorta found what i was looking for by searching for "end of the road boyz filetype:tongue:df" on google. quick tip/way to find some chords you cant figure out by searching for sheet music. now i just gotta figure out variations of these chords without breaking my hands lol.

i have a lot to learn. i was watching some "srv fast lick" vids and there are terms ive never heard of before lol. like pentatonic and boxes lolwut.

Been playing for 4 years now, I don't stick to a genre so I just play whatever I feel like.
Learned this album in one sitting by ear, it uses the same chords and the "solos" are easy.

I'm completely self taught, I can do 5 string sweep picking, sweep tapping, and I write a bit of music, nothing I share tho

The cool cat behind that song is jairus mozee. Very chill man. Ageniuson the guitar. He came up with that bminor run during a sound check and dropped it on that song. I can post a tutorial on it if u want but i voice the chords. He does something almost like it but different fingering. However, note for note im playing it the same. The chords for the rest of the song are Bm7, Eminor7, G/A, then Cmaj7

It got a really, REALLY small knick on it but man, it plays amazing.

ill leave this here, so much srv influence as well as claptons. Needless to say i stole most of the licks on here. Minus his face and the popped collars

Posting for later. Been wanting to learn for years now. Still haven't even taken the first step.

Took a guitar class at my college last year. Been looking around for a solid electric to pick up. Anyone have any tips? Beginner level, of course.

Also, any sites with songs written in sheet music notation? Instead of just tabs?

Whats your budget? what style of music u like? (or whose your fave artist)
as far as sites with notation only, its hard to come around those, but powertabs or guitarpro from U-G usually contain both.

Favorite genre? Indie rock, I suppose. But I'd like to learn a good variety of rock; indie to metal to psych to whatever.
Budget? I dunno, cheap?

Lets say less than 400.

Thanks for the site tips. I'll check those out.

If there's a tab i can probably get it in a day but I'm still trying to learn the scales and theory. Pretty much once I started learning a year ago, I learned to appreciate the blues a lot more

I started teaching myself around September or so and I love it. I probably "practice" just about every day. It doesn't feel like practice, though. I just sit in front of the TV and play, and time flies by. Funny thing is that I actually got a free guitar a couple years ago, but only only tried to play it for about a week, got impatient, and sold the guitar for $20. lol. What made me pick it up again, was a friend-of-a-friend who was really good gave me a few pointers, and I instantly got the hang of it better in 10 minutes with him than the entire time when I first tried. It helps a LOT to have someone just show you a few little tricks. I'm currently practicing on my friend's classical guitar, but eventually want to get an acoustic.

I played piano for only like 2-3 years when I was really little, so I have a bit of music background, but I have a really good ear for music I think. I can't read music or anything (even have trouble reading tabs). I like singing too, so the way I progress/choose songs right now is pick a song that I like, that I can sing well, and that I can form the cords for
(still have trouble with barre chords, but I think I'm pretty good at strumming otherwise). Then I try and find songs that have skills I want to work on, like strum patterns, picking, pull offs/hammer-ons, etc. I'm currently trying to practice palm muting.

Any tips for using a pick? I can't use one worth @#$! right now...I should go back and work on some basics. I never really had patience to practice barre chords, so I can't do a regular F or B...

Glad to see this thread, I always wanted to learn how to play the guitar, but never had the time. What's a good inexpensive gutiar to learn how to play on.

It depends. Electric or Acoustic? What defines "inexpensive" for you?

I'm considering purchasing an instructional DVD, but am not sure how effective it would be. And yes, I definitely want to learn how to read music, and not just know how to play by ear.
An instructional DVD is not as good as someone personally teaching you, the DVD can't answer all of your questions, but if you don't have someone who can help you then I usually go on YouTube or figure it out myself.

Reading music is a must for advanced players, but so is playing by ear. Playing by ear is a really good talent to have and it took me song long to even get it down slightly. Some are more gifted there than others.

Congrats on picking up an acoustic btw, know what type of music you wanna play?

I'm not sure which genre I want to play most, but I guess it would be along the lines of what I hear from my favorite indie / alternative rock artists.

Noskey- you could probably get a decent guitar on ebay.

I got a mexican strat on craigslist for 300

I haven't touched it in so long

mexican made fender strat. Or an ibenez of your choice would be the way to go. You can get an epiphone les paul as well those look nice but i suggest you try them each before you buy them. I had a mexican made fender strat as my first. its a brown one with a white pickguard that i posted in the guitar heads thread. It got the job down and i got it for 400

I can't stop listening to John Mayer and BB King..

There isn't anyone quite like the King himself.

Wishing I could play like that one day.

More than likely acoustic. About $500 max for a guitar.

These are my 3 babys.

The smaller acoustic is an older Silvertone, the other acoustic is a Takamine EG544SC-4C & the electric is an FGN that used to belong to my good friend Kurt Travis.

See if there's a guitarcenter or music store near you and head out to go check some out sometime. You can find tons of great guitars for under $500, you just need to look. If you wait until holidays, guitar stores / music stores will usually have sales.

In that price range you could definitely find a really nice Epiphone or Ibanez. Fender makes some good acoustics around there too but it all depends on what sound you like. Going in and getting hands on with a guitar is really the best choice. Different woods, different looks, shapes, sounds, etc. All of these go into a guitar so it makes it difficult to pick one for you.
