I was hoping this would be much faster and be able to compete with the R8 but sadly, it just isn't in that level. I love how this car looks but I'd take an R8 over it any day even with the good mpg numbers.

Underhood sits a 1.5-liter, turbocharged, three-cylinder engine. On its own, it churns out a respectable 231 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, which is then channeled to the rear wheels by way of a six-speed automatic transmission. An electric motor, meanwhile, sends 131 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque through a two-speed automatic to the front wheels.

With all-wheel drive at its disposal, the total system power sits at 362 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque, and allows the i8 to scamper to 62 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds. That excellent performance is offset by an estimated fuel economy figure of 94 miles per gallon, though, making this a fast and efficient vehicle. Charging is impressively fast on the i8, with a full charge coming from a 110-volt outlet in under four hours. A BMW Charging Station will trim the charge time down to 1.5 hours.

Wait, so the back wheels are gas powered and the front wheels are electric and somehow, with magic I presume, thats supposed to make the car more economical than a regular rear wheel drive car?

EDIT: I guess I could see how it would take some of the load off the rear wheels, making it fuel efficient..but now you have 2 BMW motors the maintain vs one.

The front wheels might do more work most of the time thus saving gas. When it comes to electric cars, it still depends on how you drive to get the best MPG. You won't get anywhere close to that 94mpg if you bury your right foot on the gas pedal too much.

The BMW i8 can run up to 22 miles on electric power alone, at a top speed limited to 75 mph. Or the engine can power the rear wheels, or both front and rear wheels can be driven together for maximum performance--with the car's vehicle control software modulating power between the two different sources.

Same.  I thought this was gonna be all electric, like BMW's response to Tesla, but I guess it's just a hybrid at heart.

True, BMW isn't doing themselves any favors with that price tag.  Like you said, you can get an R8 with better performance for relatively the same price.  Gonna be nice to see one on the road, hope Top Gear gets ahold of one.
 
I work right off Rodeo drive....already know people who will auto-cop....status symbol
I think the hyping of "luxury" electric cars will help drive the demand for mid and lower-end electric vehicles and that's a good look for the auto industry overall.

Didn't work for Fisker. :lol: Though it is probably more of an insiders fault in their case.

I see the i8 as a Prius sports car though, BMW & Toyota actually teamed up for a hybrid electric vehicle though I am not sure if this is part of that team-up. I don't know, I would have preferred this to be more powerful for the price, a toned down 918 of sorts. Plus it also kind of off-putting that you need to put gas on your car and then go home and then have to plug it in still. It would have been better if they just picked one, full electric or full hybrid.

I would too for the same reasons but why do people keep comparing what looks to be a coupe to a sedan? Hell wish I had the money to cop both cause the looks are crazy IMO. Rfx like you said Fisker was definitely something else cause looks wise that is a very nice looking car and people that have/had it for the most part love them.

I don't think it is fair to compare the I8 to the Tesla. First the the I8 is a plug-in Hybrid while the Tesla is all Electric. Also, comparing the is comparing a sedan to a sports coupe so it's like comparing an A7 to an R8, it's just not fair.

But look-wise, the I8 is just on a different level, the production car still looks like a concept car and it looks even better moving on the road.


 
If I could pick between this and an r8, I honestly don't know which one i would choose. R8 is sleek amd powerful and is a performance beast, while the i8 is cutting edge technology and futuristic elements everywhere.
 
i8 seems to be a decent everyday car with great everyday specs...

...if i want performance though, r8
