Kobe/Shaq Trade Revisited

Miami got exactly what they wanted out of the trade. It was no secret that Shaq's health/conditioning was on the decline. He is over 300 pounds and takes abeating by multiple people nightly. The body breaks down, faster for a big man. The Heat will be back in the lottery with a well-rested Wade and a fewbenchwarmers with some playing time under their belts.

LA has some problems of their own. Kobe has six or seven good years left at the level he's at. To get out of the west he has to make it past Dallas, SanAntonio, Houston, Golden State, New Orleans. Oh yeah, Portland who is playing great w/o their #1 draft pick Oden. If they even make it out of the West wouldthey be able to beat the best of the east? Boston, Orlando, Detroit, or even Toronto. It's great that they have improved, but it may be at the wrong time.

The Heat shot for a small window to win a championship and the gamble paid off.

Let's not think about injuries.

despite the lakers' record, they have yet to accomplish anything.

brian grant was a bust and got waived, caron got traded, and lamar is a joke.

when the lakers reach their goal at getting that ring then you can make it an argument.

i hate to say it but my lakers are still the big losers in that trade.

miami may be rock bottom but shaq was still able to get his ring w/o kobe.

kobe would trade spaces for a ring in hearbeat.

So future possibilities and solid foundations are more important than rings now?

The Lakers are now the new Bulls. Trendy and overrated.

We have talent and depth like the Bulls but also the two things for which Chicago has been willing to trade a king's ransom. A productive low post scorerand a super star perimeter player.

The Bulls are a very talent supporting cast with no one to support. We have the best overall perimeter player in the NBA and Bynum, who will soon be the bestcenter in the league and one of the best players in general and then we got youth and talent from 3 through 12.

Ummm... yeah, that's just false.

Period.

For running a franchise, your ability to maintain success in the future is just as critical as your success right now in the present. If you make a business plan predicated on immediate success that eliminates any possibility of future success, you've just severely crippled your business.

Great points, ska, but a business and an NBA franchise aren't exactly the same. Running a successful business has a LOT to do with planning for both thepresent and future, but there really is no "ceiling" of accomplishment for a business. But for a sports franchise, there is, and that's winning aChampionship. After that, the only direction left to go is down (aside from staying level). The Miami Heat made the trade for instant success. Did they getwhat they were looking for? Of course they were. Did they think Shaq would make the Heat title contenders for the next 4-6 years? Maybe for two or three, butnot for the entire length of his contract. Injuries played huge parts in their recent lack of success, but like I said, they're injuries, which cannot beplanned.

One definitive way to measure sports greatness is by accomplishments. Players, coaches, GMs, and other front office personnel are paid to bring inchampionships, not to be contenders or to be near the top every year. Every year, 29 teams fail. Players like Ewing, Barkley, Malone, Drexler, etc. are greatplayers, but they will always be known as being unable to win a Championship.

So I guess the question is, in a six year span, would you rather be a perennial top contender but not win a title, or win a title but not be contenders for theremaining years?

What's there to revisit?? You guys are arguing about the same garbage from 4 years ago. Miami got what they wanted, a quick championship. The Lakersretained one of the greatest perimeter players to ever play the game, and built an up and coming young team around him. Both teams are basically doing whatthey inteded to do.

Easy for a knicks fan to say....

Umm where are the knicks right now?

So because his team is not that great, he can't have an opinion on another?

I love watching the Lakers play, but just because they are 1st in the West right now doesn't mean they are literally "the best" in the West.Aren't all 8 playoff spots separated by about 5 games or so?

^ First of all, what if we don't go through another first round exit?

Second, we'll all be laughing when we see the playoff picture and notice that 'Miami Heat' is nowhere in the Eastern Conference bracket.

Ill be giggling when the "Team with the best record in the West, RIGHT NOW, Lakers have another first round exit
just as im giggling right now because the Heat are the WORST team in the East. You guys are playing worse than the Knicks and are just as badfinancially, congrats!!!!
