I was born and lived in LA until I was 18. Then I went to school in Boston for 4 years and worked in NYC for 2. Now I work in the South Bay.

Anyway during the NFL playoffs I passionately rooted against the 49ers and my wife asked me why. She made a good point..she said why do you root against a team that pays taxes and boosts the economy in our neighborhood. I told her I dont care. I hate the whiners even if I see their stadium everyday on my way to work.

She had also asked me (during mlb playoffs)why I hated Boston teams so much if I had been educated in beantown and it was a city that had been a big part of my life (friends, networking, education).

Then yesterday I told her my son would grow up to be an LA fan (Raiders only non LA team) and she said my son would probably want to root for local teams since he has never lived in LA. That had me shook.

Anyway my wife hates sports and could care less who we root for as a family but it got me thinking how people feel about their local sports teams.

I know people that like their birth city team but left and have not been back for over 20yrs. I also know people that moved to say Phoenix for example and had no problem dropping their old team for the Cards, Dbacks and Suns.

People says immigrants should like the US soccer team because they live here and the US has given them a better life but they still root for their mother country.

Whats your opinion?

When I moved to LA I attended Dodger games and had a great time, and while I would never call myself a Dodgers fan I do like to see them doing well.

Born and raised in LA. Root for the lakers and dodgers. Can't do it for the clippers and angels. But I don't root against them.

I lived in Southern California my entire life until I moved to the DMV area last June (die hard Lakers fan and casual UCLA Bruins fan).

I'd like to see the Wizards do well, I despise the Skins and I don't care for the other teams in the area all that much.

Lot of cornballs on this board rooting for teams they have no connection to

Right ? Though it's just sports, I also wonder how it's so easy for people to do that. You have no idea how many people I know who are born and raised in certain cities, move to another arbitrary city for a year and show utter disgust for their original city.

DMV resident, Lakers fan. Reason? While my dad was alive (R.I.P.) the first & only jersey he ever bought me was one of those throwback Lakers jersey (Blue, Kobe # 8 ), this was over 10 years ago. So that's that. I will say I REALLLLY got into basketball around '06, and we all know how that season went.

Unless your parent has worked for a franchise none of yall have "connections" to any team.

OP, root for whoever the hell you want. Doesn't need to be any thought behind it man

Mom's family is from Wisconsin so when its comes to sports I've always been Packers, Brewers and the Badgers (even though I didn't attend school there it was my dream University) Although when it comes to basketball, I'm a Lakers fan, and that always strikes people as odd due to where all my other teams ply their trades. If my dad hadn't influenced me so much when I was younger I'd probably be a Bucks fan too. But I've met several people here in Sacramento that like the most oddball teams and really have to connection to them haha. Some guy I work with likes the Denver Broncos, San Antonio Spurs, and Atlanta Braves. But to each their own I guess, I like that while my teams arent "local" I'm still very much connected to them in someway.

Born in Seattle, raised in NY.

Sonics
Seahawks

Not a huge baseball fan but I basically root for the Yankees, since that's the team I've been going to see since I was a kid.

I've never been an NY sports fan and always felt a connection to Seattle teams as a kid, since most of my extended family is over there it was a point of pride thing I guess. My brother is the same except he HATES every NY team and is a Mariners fan.

Raised in NYC for most of my childhood. Still have a strong connection to the City...go a few times a year + most of my fam lives in the area.

Yankees & Knicks. Rangers as well but once the lockout hit I stopped following hockey as much as I used to. I'm not up to the day to day stuff anymore.

I've lived in MA for most of my life now though.

Been a Pats fan ever since I picked up on football through watching local games back when dudes in the area used to clown them.

I've watched countless Celtics games and (for the most part) like for them to do well but I'm not a fan. Only been to 1 game at the Gahhden in all my years here.

Bos vs. NY discussions were always fun.

Because most of them are bandwagons. I have so many friends that are Cowboys fans and never even been more South than Six-Flags.

First 18 years of my life = Nebraska
College = Iowa state
After = Dallas

I'm a husker football fan forever, I'll root for ISU, and I have no real ties to a pro team. I just root for my main man _____

What if you live in a city with out a sports team?
born and raised in Hawaii. my dad is a Raiders/Dodgers fan so thats all I ever knew.

He likes the Lakers too but I just like basketball in general and choose not to be a fan of any team.

Always a fan of these conversations cause some dudes just pick the "best" team...(which isn't a HUGE deal if you stick with them when they aren't good...) This guy I did a radio show with last Summer is a fan of the Broncos, Bulls, and Braves (think of the 90s)...and has never lived in any of those places.

Anyways...grandparents and mom went to KU, I go to KU...Rock Chalk Jayhawk until I die.

KC Chiefs...lived in Kansas majority of my life and so has my family.

KC Royals...wasn't a huge baseball fan for a while but have watched a lot of Royals games the past two years and now I'm a pretty big fan of theirs. (Excited for what they have this year...hopefully make a playoff push.)

Phoenix Suns...lived in Arizona for about a decade from '99-'08...fell in love with the Seven Seconds or Less teams, been with them ever since...was a huge Diamondbacks fan when I was a kid...don't care about them anymore.

Don't care about NHL or MLS....(was happy for Sporting KC when they won the Cup, but I didn't care much)

My cousins ex. Grew up in LA and rooted for the lakers. Then he moved to Sacramento because he's in the military and rooted for the home team kings. This was when the kings were good. Hell he even got suckered into buying WNBA season tickets to the monarchs? (I think that's the team in Sacramento). Basically he roots for the home team. He's not a bandwagoner. He just roots for the team where he stays.

You root for a team you like on how they play. Not for a team YOU HAVE to root for because you live in that location or because it's your hometown.
