Alright...I'm sure this argument has been hashed out before but I need vent/advice.

So today my friend from Malaysia during the Nigeria v Iran game asked if its ok to call the people from Nigeria the n word.

I told him no and he asked why because in his mind the n word derived from the word Nigeria..when in fact it comes from the spanish word negro via latin.

All that etymological stuff is besides the point.  I told him it was offense to black people because it was a word used by white people to dehumanize all aspects of black people and their societies.

His response was: "I'm not white.  It should be ok."

I tried to explain to him the race of the person saying the word doesnt matter, it's a word used to hurt and degrade others.

Then he tried to go with the whole "it could've been any word. what if i said x [insert any word here'] with the same intent"

I then explained how well seeing as history has chosen the N word that argument is invalid.

I told him to just drop it and not say it because things would only go downhill from here.

Though I never said it, it hurt me that even if he didn't get it and understand the history and power behind the word he should just not say it out of respect for me.  I guess that wasn't enough.

For those wondering why I aint run up on him etc. etc..its because that wouldnt explain my point.  Physical violence will only make him say it behind my back instead of not saying it at all.

What to do?

Seems to me that dude just want to use the word. A true friend would of have dropped the conversation once you said no .. The fact that you had to continue explaining why not is the real problem.

Take him around black people, let him say it, and record him getting beat up for NT.

For real guys physical violence doesnt teach people anything...I really trying to figure out what to do here.. i have to live with this guy until december

I'm one of those weird people who believe that blacks should be allowed to use the word as much as they damn well please. I was probably influenced by Chris Rock

Anyway, I'm weird and feel like we have the ability to extend "N-Word Privileges" to our friends

And then you have to understand, as my wise father put it, "There are some white folks, who are, just, well....black."

But I do think that there are circumstances in which it's unacceptable for a non-white to use the word, and I mean the A version, not just the ER version.

N-Word privileges are also weird when it comes to South Americans and Latin folks. Sometimes I'll see a Hispanic person say it and be like "oh, that's totally cool". Other times I honestly get kind of heated

. But latin-Americans are an extremely diverse group.

I know this girl who's dad is Peruvian and who's mom is a white-bread woman from Tennessee. She listens to rap, smokes trees like a chimney, and is more knowledgeable of Biggie and Pac's discography than most black people I know. But she LOOKS like a straight up white girl. Tall, skinny, light brown hair, blue eyes.

And she uses the N-word a little too often around me.

It's a tricky issue and up to personal opinion and discretion. There's no way to codify this kind of thing because we all individually feel totally different about it.

P.S. OP, your friend is wrong. Dead wrong.

Maybe stop associating with homie for a little bit because he's certainly using it within other circumstances

Did I say something funny?

Was their something funny about our exchange?

Why for a moment did I expect NT to take anything seriously....

OP I found the perfect relevant clip for you to show your friend.

South Park is genius, man. The fact of the matter is that non-blacks just "don't get it". I know that sounds kind of ignorant and sort of victimizes us, but it's the truth.

Useful post.  Would rep if the world cup thread hadnt taken them all. I'll come around for u tomorrow.

So you also allow white people to use it as much as they should too? If you don't, doesn't that qualify as racism? Its a sticky situation haha

In on thread turning into something about Jay Z in page 3

Yes or no question op.

Do you think your friend is racist?
If you had asked me this morning..I would've said no.

Now I don't know  anymore.  I want to say yes right now but so far this is the only thing he's ever done to offend me like that.

No black jokes, no racist humor, nothing of the sort.
