I'm not so sure about that anymore. Just from reading all of these insiders and comments from the Yankees front office, they really value their first round pick and sandwich pick that they got for DRob.I'm pretty sure we get Scherzer now. If they don't want to get Scherzer. Then they better not spend any money on anybody. Don't waste years and money for guys you only marginally want (Headley). You either go all in, or you don't at all.

If Cashman gives Scherzer an 8 year, $216M contract then he's taking lessons on how to be a ****** GM from Amaro Jr.
Maybe its Boras trying to use the Yankees as leverage against other teams or Cashman pretending to be interested so another team pays more than they want like the White Sox and Robertson and the Red Sox and Carl Crawford in the past.

I probably would have gone 6 years / $163 on Max.
5 years of $30mil. Then a final year at $13mil. Just to offset costs.
Honestly surprised people don't try to go at contracts like that. Overpay for productive years, so you can have a lesser amount when you know he'll deteriorate. In the end you still would be paying a fair AAV.

That would be a good idea but even though they would only be paying him $13M in the final year he would still count as $27M using AAV.

They pay the tax on him as if he was $27mil, but it at least alleviates it something because tax isn't dollar for dollar.

What to still do:
I'd still go after Max Scherzer. Not at what Boras wants. I'd stay at 6 year / $160mil, and I would not budge. If he doesn't sign here, fine, at least you made a good offer.
Regardless of what Scherzer does, go get Sergio Romo.
Looking to next year...... Some names I like:
Jason Heyward or Justin Upton for RF.
Doug Fister, Mat Latos, Rick Porcello, David Price, Jordan Zimmerman, Johnny Cueto.
