Why do people look down on people who do "blue collar" jobs?

It really sickens me, tho. Like, why do people look at them as if their inferior? Some of these "Blue collar" jobs make $25-$100 an hour..

Arrogance really... vocational jobs are da only joints still getting paid major right now.

This guy.

Everybody who i know who is an electrician, or in construction, or does CDL truck driving makes way more than all da office dwellers i know...only 1 person i know who makes more than that is in finance & he's a 200k a year.

Your really use anecdotal evidence for everything

Even if you take out medical professionals, white collar jobs still dominate

----------But yes, it is stupid to look down on blue collar work

Arrogance and insecurity. The system has taught us to look down on blue collar jobs because they aren't "pretty". People don't want to be seen as someone who is uneducated or poor. In reality, a lot of blue collar jobs offer good wages, benefits, inflation adjustments, and security. I know a few people who think they are doing it just because they work for some random sales/marketing company in some random building in downtown Chicago. The system has fooled people into thinking that is the way to success and that any office job is "successful" to them. I'll respect anyone who is earning a wage because someone has to do it, and that person doesn't care what the job is because they need cash to provide.

Because people are brainwashed to go to college, get a degree, and get a "career."

I'm a union Inside Wireman Apprentice (electrician) at 60% of Journeyman wage and make more than my cousin and my sister who both have their masters. Granted, my sister is a teacher.

I love my job, I get to light America, brotherhood across the country. Electricians are always in demand and posses a skill set that not everybody has. Some people might paint their house themselves, they're not gonna mess with electrical. Not everybody can become an electrician, it takes years and a lot of practice to truly be a craftsman.

Me personally, I was brought up in a blue collar family. My old man is a 30 year union painter and my uncles work in the utilities. I grew up looking up to blue collar guys.

Nothing wrong with a hard hat and a hammer. :pimp:

calm down Holmes. I said there's more in blue colored jobs. why? Because their are less females on the worksite.

Lionblood, it's not that difficult.

Blue collar means labor, white collar means office or non manual work.

I don't know any electrical engineers that work with tools, don't think any engineers work with tools such as hammers, pliers, screwdrivers, etc.

Can't speak on the rest.

Although there's more women slowly joining the trades, this is true. At least 90% of jobsites that I can speak on are males.

I've taken physics classes with engineers, they have to build prototypes and models. You think they just draw out circuits and give it to technicians and hope for the best?

White collar doesn't mean non-manual work/sitting at a desk IMO, that lady that sits at the desk for 14 hours a day developing back pain and carpal tunnel getting paid 10 dollars an hour is technically manual labor.

No one considers doctors "blue collar" but many of them work with their hands and put in more hours than most plumbers.

Blue collar is manual labor. idk how else to put it. It's not what you consider manual labor, it's what is manual labor.

Many people with college degrees have blue collar jobs, I don't know why you guys are associating that with being white collar? Ninjahood done brainwashed a lot of you.

My local is seeing a lot more college graduates attempting to join the trade. A lot more money to be made out here.

Yall love to have the same stupid arguments over and over again.
Crazy how much golf really means out here. On my team theres 8 guys, and I'm the only one who doesnt know how to golf. Sometimes they'll all sit around and talk about golf for 30 minute stretches and I'm just there lost. Its like this across the entire floor, everyone and their mom golfs.

with that said

 i don't plan to be blue collar anymore......those days are over......**** that ****

So being in a "Worksite" makes you "blue collar"? Sounds like some sexist **** to me man.

-Why isn't a waitress "blue collar"?
-Why isn't a "hair dresser"?
-Why not that lady who cleans hotel hotel rooms?
-Why not cooks?

You telling me all these jobs have less women on the "worksite"? This thread is bullcrap anti-intellectual, sexist propaganda.
Why is jadakiss as hard as it gets?

Use to be Union concrete finishing via SD county in SoCal in my early twenties. the women that worked with us were tough as nails and got respect if they took no **** from anybody. But......,,.,,,,,,,
got more respect if they completed their jobs on time.

We keep harping on college graduates, it seems like you're trying to make an excuse for not going to college. There are a ton of college grads in trade and manual labor jobs.

You don't need an excuse to not go to college. it's your personal choice.

For me going to college would have been a dumb move. I would have been graduating no earlier than 22 and starting my career as an electrician 3 years later than I did.

I work in a "white collar" field and all of my closest friends do as well. None of us look down on "blue collar" careers and some of us worked those jobs before

I respect anyone who works hard

Mechanical, civil, and electrical engineers work with tools, hard hats, etc. Engineers literally BUILD things, you don't think they use tools?

Orthopaedic surgeons work with power tools and hammers and wear a space suit for arthroplasties

Microbiologists work with dangerous microbes on a daily basis

Astronauts risk their lives to go to space, and have to be very technically sound with tools

They all have advanced degrees, if blue collar means a macho job then education has nothing to do with it.

Stop perpetuating the dumbing down of our society by assuming being educated means you sit in a room reading Carl Sagan.

And ortho is one of the most competitive subspecialties to match into

I agree, but don't feed me that college=white collar nonsense. You wanted to be an electrician, you didn't need a college education, absolutely nothing wrong with that. I had some electrical work done on my house, neither of them spoke English.

Some people go to college to keep their options open, and some end up becoming electricians and floor buffers, I won't fault them for it. This is why a basic college education needs to be more affordable.

I'm not feeding you that college=white collar non sense.

 what? Dude where is the sexism?

Um maybe the part about male camradery?

Although there's more women slowly joining the trades, this is true. At least 90% of jobsites that I can speak on are males.

You basically said most women are in "white collar jobs" which is BEYOND STUPID.

no, I said mmost jobsites I can speak on are 90% male. To my experience this is true. Idk what women are doing, but most aren't in construction is all I can say.

True.

But things like housekeeping and janitorial work is blue collar as well.

Things like nail salons and waitressing too
