Interested in stories.

I'm two years (maybe a few months more depending on if i take summer/extra classes) away from a degree and am considering dropping out to pursue what i'll just say is a career in a creative/media/artist based field where it's pretty much about whether you have the talent or not and not a degree.

Been considering dropping out and going for it for a while. I wanna do it while i'm still young and dumb enough to go hard with it, but of course the immediate question is what is my immediate job gonna be and I guess I'm just looking for success/failure stories from those who dropped out/or alternatively got the degree and whether or not they regret the decision.

i guess i'm kinda splitting the focus on the art and school and not really making that good progress in either. i don't wanna get the degree and at 22-23 have a degree for a career i don't want and before you know it i'm 24-26 with a career i don't really want and no longer have the passion, energy or free time to chase the art based career.

Family is also taking a good chunk of the financial burden of school off of me and that is also playing a role (actually probably the biggest role) in my hesitation to just walk away from school after 2 years. But at the same time i don't wanna be 25-30 and saying what if because i didn't wanna disappoint my family.

TL;DR - anyone dropped out of college to pursue a creative career OR anyone stayed in college and ignored their creative passion to get a degree OR anyone got the degree and pursued their creative passion afterwards?

What is your current major?

What do you want to do?

Do you have work / material that backs up your creative passion?

Communications Major with a focus on Advertising; if I got the degree my end game would be to get into making music for commercials and television

If I dropped out, I'd put my focus towards going into production, behind the scenes songwriting/ghostwriting and also the commercial/television music production as a more consistent stream of income.

I've made a little money off of music in the past but haven't really been pursuing money over the past couple of years and moreso just been trying to get better and find a niche. I've been called stupid by my friends for not selling beats and people say I'm really good although i know to take compliments from friends/family with a grain of salt. But i'd say i'm nice. People hear me playing beats and stop by the room to tell me I'm nice but again I take it with a grain of salt and keep getting better.

Don't have any music online and not posting any because if I make it I wanna have as clean a social media/online presence as possible

Hard to give you advice if you're not willing to post your music. A lot of it depends on whether you're actually good.

I'd say just finish school. What's two more years? And why wouldn't you be able to still make music while going to school?

Negative investment entirely to not just stick it through.

Might as well get the degree since you've already forked over thousands b

OP just post some beats easiest way for us to tell you to get a day job or not. We'll be honest promise.

Agreed with most here just get the degree... Best back up plan In case you need to pick yourself up. It's the logical and safe route. Your base salary is almost always guaranteed 50+k, with a degree & effort. I'm not saying not to pursue your dream in what you'd like, but it wouldn't hurt to have that back up. Especially if it's paid for.

Dropped out of high school to play poker, does that count?

For discussion's sake, let's say I'm good enough. Like I said, if I make it I want that clean online/social media slate as much as possible.

I'm not really worried about whether or not I have the talent/ear.

As far as not being able to make music while still doing school/or not being able to make music after I get the degree, I just feel like splitting your time between both is detrimental to your progress in both. It's like I could either be making much more progress in terms of a music production career or I could have much better grades/internships/etc.

Same for after I graduate. I could either be making strides in music production and making connections/placements, or I could be making major strides in getting a solid career.

I just feel like it's at the point where I have to pick one or the other and go hard as possible with it because I'm not 18 fresh out of high school anymore.

How did it work out for you? Was that your passion or were you just good enough to where you knew how to make money?

Worked out well, it was something I was passionate about.

I believe that as long as you're willing to make the necessary sacrifices that you can achieve pretty much anything.

Poker for me is basically my distraction from the world.

When I'm playing I don't give a **** about anything else, so, it's not really hard for me to log 80-100hr weeks.

If music is that for you, then I say go for it.

Its your life OP...........

Jump to 10:00 to hear about MASTERMIND LOL!!!

Have been debating on pursuing music myself too, haven't been told I was trash since 2010. I am planning to pursue a career in graphic design or animation and just going as hard as I can on the music side since that's really what I want to do but learning how to animate would bring my "vision" together better & I would be able to get my ideas across on a different level. I say go ahead and finish up your degree since you're 2 years into it and have financial help unless you're really hating it there which it doesn't seem like you are.

Remember, its never too late to pop in music...2chainz 39  Look at Kevin Hart too, dude went from paper soldiers to think like a man, all I am saying is if you want it, it's definitely right there.

Do you have a roommate at school or a 1 bedroom?

i don't have a story to share but the above 2 passages stand out to me, if there already is some doubt in your mind about pursuing graphic design and you aren't progressing with it, spending an additional 2 years to acquire a degree would seem a waste...that being said if your fam is/has been supporting some of the financial burden, it might make sense to think about switching your focus/major to pursuing something that is either music related and/or something that you feel will equip you better to earn some bread to support you in the pursuit of the music thing...

either way i don't think it is worth worrying about age/time, much better to ask yourself are you making decisions/putting yourself in a position to be successful in the things you put your effort(s) into...

good luck!

I wish i could quit my job and do artsy stuff. Not exactly sure what exactly, but something. Sell a painting a week for 500 or something.

I wanna get back into making beats NT. I hate that I stopped doing it years back...
I was in school to get my A&P license but I had to withdraw due to my job switching from 8hr shift to 12hrs.
Since I've been out of school I've just been thinking like, wth should I do bruh??
Aircraft Mechanics is a great profession but I wouldn't call it a passion of mine, the opportunity just kinda came my way.I am interested though, I like tinkering and I did look forward to getting my license.
I'm kinda torn I guess, when I see a plane fly over my job I :smh:
When I hear a dope beat by Alchemist, Madlib etc I :smh: too
