I could seriously see it in 10 years once they get more people to do it and the quality and number of films using it jumps more, but we are already getting solid performances from people it's way too hard to ignore

I mean everyone one who was supporting apes in the last apes film held it down and clearly they've expanded and looks like surpassed that for this film
we just get more quality films like this and it's a done deal much like the animation category, no way they were gonna overlook pixar's achievements especially in the originality department back then, and not create a category for them.
Serkis already gonna get that honorary oscar for sure, but a legit one is coming.

I watched it recently... In a quick 3 second news report the news caster says they lost contact with the shuttle or something similar...

Slim to none. There are some categories that people have been fighting to add for years and it's never happened. Two that come to mind are stuntmen (and women) and casting. Even so, anything involving a screen cap suit would probably get relegated to the technical Oscars.

I think that was the point tho... Put it in the background as something you don't think about until a decade later when 3rd or 4th movie ties it all together...
