Houston Texans Pre-Season 2014 - NT Bowl 2.5...Battle For Roster Spots

we have to take a QB. Keenum isn't the answer.

It's gonna change the face of the franchise, so they better nail it. If not, we're screwed.

Somebody school me on Bridgewater, I know nothing about him. As far as Clowney not fitting the scheme, he may not have to fit it if Phillips isn't there. I don't know what his contract is like, but if this streak lasts 14 games, they may get rid of EVERYBODY

I can't school you on Bridgewater, but i haven't been impressed when I've seen him play. For someone with so much hype surrounding him, i was expecting a lot more.

Also, I wouldn't touch Clowney with a 10 foot pole. Does he have the measurables you look for in a stud DE? Absolutely. However, i feel he lacks the on field motor and drive to really be an elite player. Way too similar to the issues that have held back Mario, IMO.

Did Ben Tate lose his spot to Dennis Johnson? That bum needa take his wishy washy *** outta H town

Nah, though Tate has been toughing it out with the broken ribs, he still has broken ribs, and it's painfully easy to tell he's laboring, which has rendered him pretty ineffective. Loved what I saw from DJohnson though. You can tell he has worked on his fumbling issues.

Also, seems like starting with the Raiders game, Kub has slowly turned Keenum into mini-Schaub. I know he's been getting blitzed more, but it seems like the play calling has been reduced to nothing as well. Nice sabotage to me.

O yea forgot he injured. I feel dumb believing in him & hopkins on my fantasy tm seemed like texans jinxed me once foster went on IR. Also hope u guys clean house w/coaching staff team unbearable to watch :smh:

You and me both blakmn89. This will be an epic cleansing heading into the offseason, and it can't get here soon enough

:smokin we suck.

crazy how ATL is right next to us chillin' though.

At least we know ATL won't be drafting a QB (well, yet)

Lovie Smith? Ehhhhh, I just wanna get somebody new in here

Taking clowney first would be crazy. The NFL is an offensive league now, an all world D -end isn't what is was 5 or even 3 years ago.

Gotta take a QB with #1 pick, cut schaub and Yates, pick up help on O-line, RB, and D later in the draft in that order.

Agreed on QB. Oline, dline & LBs for me.

For those who feel like the Texans should compete:

TEXANS TO-DO LIST vs the Pats

1. Put pressure on Tom Brady

What’s the best way to stop Tom Brady’s momentum?

“Sack him,” Antonio Smith said. “Sack him hard.”

The Patriots have given up 31 sacks for a loss of 201 yards in 2013, compared with 30 for 263 yards that the Texans have allowed. Brady, however, manages to release the ball quickly when he can.

“It’s a quick tempo offense that Brady loves to do,” Whitney Mercilus said. “Pretty much he gets that ball out quick, maybe two, two-and-a-half seconds. He gets that ball out quick and that’s all you have got to do. Play up to the tendencies.”

2. Contain Gronk

Defensive coordinator calls Wade Phillips calls Gronkowski a “go-to guy in time of need.” With Tom Brady’s ability to spread the ball around, Gronkowski has returned this season and emerged as his favorite target.

After being inactive for the first six games this season, Gronkowski caught his 40th career touchdown pass from Brady in Week 11 against Carolina. With that score, Gronkowski surpassed Randy Moss as Brady’s top touchdown target in franchise history.

The Texans secondary gains back a playmaker this week with the return of Kareem Jackson. Look for rookie D.J. Swearinger to also step up in his role to help contain Gronkowski. Johnathan Joseph says it will be important to disguise looks against Brady, but not too much.

“You don’t want to get too far over the top with trying to disguise and that putting you in a bad spot on a particular play or a particular down and distance,” Joseph said. “So for us, from a disguise standpoint, you have to kind of mix it up some because you don’t want to throw in too much where it gets you off your normal game plan also.”

3. Don't look past the run

The Patriots running game is a sneaky one, often overshadowed by Tom Brady. With a committee of backs led by Stevan Ridley, New England ranks tenth in the league, averaging 125.9 yards per game.

“They’re a downhill team,” Joe Mays said. “With Ridley, he likes to get downhill. He likes to hit the hole very fast. He’s a very good back. He’s capable of taking it all the way to the house. He runs through you, runs around you. We definitely have to have every single person against the ball this week because even though they don’t really get talked about a lot, their run game is pretty dangerous."

Ridley ran for a touchdown in five-consecutive games this season. LaGarrette Blount and Shane Vereen are also heavily involved in the Patriots run game. New England’s backs average 4.3 yards per carry in 2013 and have rushed for a net 100 yards or more in 8-of-11 games this season.

Mays is not surprised and credits the Patriots offensive line.

“Their lineman do a good job of getting on blocks and staying on blocks,” Mays said.

4. Keep Case upright and moving

With second-year defensive end Chandler Jones, the Patriots defense has put up some big sack numbers this season. Jones had two sacks against Pittsburgh and in both meetings with the New York Jets for a total of 10.5 this season. Rob Ninkovich, who has five sacks and two forced fumbles this year, has more fumble recoveries (11) over the last four seasons than any other NFL player.

Offensive coordinator Rick Dennison calls New England’s defense “big and physical” despite the injuries suffered this season to starters Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo.

“They are multiple in what they do.” Dennison said. “That’s what makes them very difficult. They seem to be able to change what they do on a week-to-week basis. So the structure is something that we’re preparing for. Don’t think that they’ll change it that much, but know that you have to beat man coverage and you have to be physical, and you have to be patient and protect the quarterback.”

Pretty much, and it only makes the Texans even more joke targets than they already are. Had they not let slow lumbering Gronk get wide open on 3 different plays, I'd actually entertain this theory. How do you let a slow 6'7" 265 guy get open repeatedly, especially knowing that him and Amendola are the main targets???

drafting a QB would be a waste, unless it's a legit franchise QB. I would need a HUGE scouting effort to draft a QB so high this year as a Texan. Even then, sorta suspect pick for the Texans. If Kubiak is still there and the play calling is the same, a new QB isn't going to do a whole bunch for the team.

They need a TACKLE (Jake Reed A&M?). We might have one of the best LT in the game, but that's countered with one of the worst RT in the game.

We need LBs, CBs, safeties also.

I'd get a good scout on Barr from UCLA and Clowney and probably choose between the two. Leaning towards Barr b/c of need, but not willing to pass up on Clowney if everything is off the charts.

Jon Joseph should be a #2 CB on our team, but doubt you'll particularly see a #1 option come out of this draft (that's actually on radar)

Seems like we need to draft an entire team  :smh: QB issues, RBs, LBs, interior DLs, RT, etc etc. I'm shaky on drafting a QB too, mostly cause I haven't seen much of Bridgewater, and the simple fact that even though this is supposed to be a deep QB draft, I don't have much confidence that this draft is first round QB deep. The coaching staff definitely had to go like many others have said. People have been fooled into believing Kubiak is done offensive guru and QB wiz, when really he just knows how to make average QBs blseem better than they really are, though I still think Case can be legit. A new QB here would be crippled by this coaching staff.

Also, any reason we let Chris Jones, our 6th round pick go? Was he just a roster casualty? Cause we sure could use his production as a rookie right now.

Another thing, that's the best I've seen JJoseph play in what I feel like is forever. Too bad he'll more than likely be on the chopping block heading into next year.

So you don't feel like we need a QB or Bridgewater isn't good for us? If so then why.

I mean we have the worst record in the league for a reason.

I haven't particularly seen franchise stellar out of him. but taking me out of the equation, what I'm saying is I would need to have scouted these quarterbacks all extremely heavily and I would have to get a consensus "FRANCHISE QB" tag from all involved in the scouting effort. I'd need someone we would think is going to absolutely be a top 10ish QB in the league. Maybe even better at the #1-3 pick spot.

QB play isn't the reason our record is the worst. We have a lot of things to address personnel wise and even including general scheme/playcalling. While Matt Schaub's pick 6's were pretty dynamically game changing, Case isn't particularly losing us games. He is a sustainable QB while we address other major concerns on our team. and maybe hope for a QB in a later draft or maybe trade down and get a steal later in the draft or next year.

Case is a great QB. He just needs to get the system adjusted to his arm and methods. He's a speed back with a strong arm.
