According to New York Newsday, "the Yankees seem likely to re-sign Mariano Rivera to a three-year, $40-million deal soon."
The Yankees are expected to offer a similar deal to Jorge Posada, but he's expressed more interest than Rivera when it comes to shopping his services on the open market. Rivera turns 38 years old later this month, so a three-year deal could ensure that he retires in New York.

Along with Miguel Cabrera, the Marlins have reportedly told teams that Dontrelle Willis is available.

The potential return for Willis has plummeted from where it was following his 22-win season in 2005, but there are no doubt still plenty of teams willing to pay a premium for the 25-year-old lefty despite his declining strikeout rate and ugly 5.17 ERA this season.

Cardinals declined their $1.1 million option on So Taguchi for 2008, choosing to pay him a $100,000 buyout.
The Cardinals reportedly may still try to re-sign Taguchi. "We wanted to give ourselves as many options as we can, and by doing this we maintain a greater degree of flexibility," general manager John Mozeliak said. A solid backup outfielder who batted .290/.358/.368 in 2007, the 38-year-old Taguchi should have little problem finding a similar contract on the open market.

MLB general managers voted 25-5 this morning to explore the use of instant replay in baseball.
It's not their call, but they will throw their weight behind trying to get it past the commissioner's office. Instant replay use would be limited to home run balls, and it's assumed MLB would use a system similar to that of the NHL, in which the umpiring crew would make a call to a central office in which all games are being monitored.

Why A-Rod won't be a Met

The Mets will almost certainly meet with Scott Boras at the GM Meetings to gauge the Alex Rodriguez situation. But as has been the case since the superstar opted out, they're still viewed as a longshot in the A-Rod sweepstakes. One of those obstacles is Rodriguez's expected financial demands. But another is obviously his position. Mets GM Omar Minaya admitted yesterday that neither third base (due to David Wright) nor shortstop (due to Jose Reyes) was a place the Mets require help.

Coco's hot topic at GM's meetings
Posted: Tuesday November 06, 2007 05:21AM ET

There have been several teams wondering which way to go with their center field situation and the name most often mentioned is Coco Crisp. The reason is the expense of the other available free-agent center fielders, including Torii Hunter, Andruw Jones, Aaron Rowand, and Mike Cameron. Crisp is relatively cheap, young and can run. Among the teams linked to Crisp include Minnesota, Houston, Texas, Philadelphia, Atlanta, the Chicago White Sox, and San Diego. There are likely others as well. The White Sox seem interested in Crisp but there's a lot of Johnny Damon-for-Joe Crede talk here between the White Sox and Yankees. The White Sox need to get a name player and Damon is definitely one player they're considering strongly.

Why Damon won't be dealt
Posted: Tuesday November 06, 2007 05:51AM ET

There is a lot of Johnny Damon-for-Joe Crede speculation. The Yanks, however, strongly indicated they feel Damon has greater value than Crede, who is coming off of back surgery that robbed most of his 2006 season and is a year from free agency with Scott Boras as his agent. With Alex Rodriguez gone, the Yanks envision having to, perhaps, manufacture runs more in 2008 and Damon is their most legitimate on-base/speed leadoff man. In addition, the Yanks felt Damon played much better as he got into better shape during last season. And they feel he will be in better condition to begin spring training in February than he was last year. Also, the Yanks think Damon became a well-above average defender in left and they may emphasize defense more in the post-Rodriguez world, as well.

Why Rockies won't trade Atkins
Posted: Tuesday November 06, 2007 05:42AM ET

You can knock Garrett Atkins off the Yankees' wish list to replace Alex Rodriguez at third base. The Rockies are adamant they are keeping Atkins. The biggest reason Colorado is not open to dealing Atkins is, ironically, because of Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, who also represents the Rockies' best hitter, Matt Holliday. Colorado will make inquiries later this offseason into signing the left fielder to a long-term deal. But the Rockies know the history of Boras' top clients is to test the free-agent market, and Holliday is two seasons away from doing that.

Cubs losing interest in Prior
Posted: Tuesday November 06, 2007 06:30AM ET

Kerry Wood's future with the Cubs could be determined within the next week. Mark Prior's status is less certain. General manager Jim Hendry wants Wood back and has told him he wants him to stay, possibly as the closer, freeing up Ryan Dempster for a trade or role change. Hendry will make a serious attempt to sign Wood before Nov. 13, when he's free to negotiate with other teams. Meanwhile, a source indicated the Cubs would tender a 2008 contract to the surgically repaired Prior only if he is willing to give the team a club option for 2009. Hendry declined to comment, but it's believed he doesn't want to invest another year in Prior's recovery only to have him bolt as a free agent.

San Diego might have interest in Clement, Prior

It appears free-agent Matt Clement, formerly of the Boston Red Sox, wants to return to the San Diego Padres and would take a low base salary as part of a one-year deal laced with incentives according to the Union-Tribune.

Clement had surgery to repair his labrum and rotator cuff in September 2006.

Another right-hander on the comeback trail from shoulder surgery, Cubs pitcher Mark Prior, is rumored to have the Padres on his radar.

The strong relationship between Padres manager Bud Black and Angels manager Mike Scioscia increases the chances the two franchises could strike a deal.

Gillick: Phillies will only spend money on pitching

The Philadephia Phillies have apparently reconsidered their needs at third base. No Mike Lowell, no Garrett Atkins, no Joe Crede. How does Greg Dobbs and Wes Helms sound?

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Tuesday the organization doesn't have enough resources either in terms of players to trade or money. The Inquirer indicated Gillick shrugged off speculation that limited partner John Middleton's recent sale of the family cigar business for $2.9 billion would allow the team to substantially increase the payroll and improve more than one area.

"If we make a deal, it will be for pitching," GM Pat Gillick said. "If we spend money, we'll spend it on pitching."

Teams in the market for a second baseman don't have much to choose from.

The New York Daily news reported the New York Mets, while interested in retaining Luis Castillo, won't decide until they fully examine all options at second base. That could make Castillo a target for the Houston Astros.

There was speculation during the NLCS that Arizona could look to trade All-Star Orlando Hudson, who hit .294 with 10 homers and 63 RBI in 517 at-bats and is a year away from free agency. The Chicago Cubs will compete with the Colorado Rockies for Kaz Matsui.

While the Yankees are first on the list, Posada indicated he will not sign with anyone this week. The New York Daily News reported Tuesday that Posada is seeking a four-year deal. The News, quoting Yankee sources, said the Yankees have internally discussed an offer of three years and $40 million.

Boston free agent Mike Lowell and Seattle's Adrian Beltre and Florida's Miguel Cabrera, both believed to be available via trade, have been mentioned as replacements at third base for the New York Yankees.

A darkhorse for the opening, created when Alex Rodriguez opted out of his contract, is St. Louis Cardinals veteran Scott Rolen according to Newsday.

Rolen, 32, has been plagued by shoulder problems and hit just eight homers in 112 games. He is owed $36 million through 2010, so the Cardinals would ask for virtually nothing in return.

You can knock Garrett Atkins off the New York Yankees' wish list to replace Alex Rodriguez at third base. The Philadelphia Phillies, also in the market for a third baseman, were said to be interested in Atkins.

The reason there was so much speculation Atkins would be traded was because the Colorado Rockies have highly-regarded prospect Ian Stewart.

However, the Rockies had Stewart work at second base during Instructional League play and received positive reports on the experiment according to the New York Post.

In 17 career playoff games, Lidge is 1-3 with six saves and a 2.52 ERA. He pitched a scoreless inning in the 2005 All-Star Game and 2.0 scoreless innings in World Baseball Classic for Team U.S.A. In 320 career games, Bruntlett has a .250 average with nine home runs and 50 RBI. He was a ninth-round selection by Houston in the 2000 draft. He has a degree in economics from Stanford University.

Lidge should definitely help the bullpen, but he's definitely not a top guy that will completely uplift that pen. The Phils have a lot of work to do concerning their throwing arms.

As for Dontrelle, i'd welcome him into our rotation if the price is right. A Dontrelle for Milledge+prospects trade could've happened before last season, but the Marlins quickly denied it. They'll be lucky to even get Milledge this time around.

Posada to the Mets? Interesting. Posada is the one of the very few Yankees that I actually like.
