Let's be real, it's only a big deal now because the media knows this is the type of stuff that would interest readers and news viewers.
I wish there was a way to prove it, but I'm willing to bet there was just as many teacher student wrongdoings back in the day..
It's the same idea that a missing pretty blonde white woman will make the news, but you can't say the same for a short fat ugly chick that ends up missing.

She came in and there was buzz around the whole school. Girls wanted to be her, guys wanted to get with her. It was on 4/5 guys list to go after her before they graduated.
