For those playing with off camera flash - any recommendation on "starter kits" or a good light stand, umbrella and the umbrella stand adapter???
I have one SB600 which I trigger using CLS (for now), but usually handheld by myself or placed on a voice activated light stand.... so I'm considering alight stand and umbrella to start off...
Soooo far per the strobist site and "research" I'm leaning towards the following but I'm confused about the adapter or which one to get...

Image stabilization, 24-70 lens (thats actually quite wide (I lmost always use the wide end of the range)), best aperture is 2.5.. RAW shooting.. manual mode..fits in your jacket no problem.. I'd def get it again if I lost it.
You need to know though that you can't use higher ISO than 200 for color photos.. B/W is good up to 400, (maybe 800).. I usually use ISO 64 or 100. If youuse something to hold the camera against you can take photos at night with those ISOs due to the imge stabilization but you get long exposures.. anyway - Ieffing love that thing. It feels good in your hand too!
The skateshots in my flickr are taken in 'snap'-mode.. that means the camera is focused on a certain point already and instantly takes a picture..thats a nice feature i think, sometimes you need to be quick. The auto-focus is a bit slow but I don't think about it too much.
I don't know about the sigma but it has bigger sensor and is the body is bigger too.. I just held it at a store but I think its too large, just might aswell get a d40 or something

Can someone please suggest a good wide angle fisheye lens for my d40x....Not too expensive.Sorry if my question is really noobish.

For both on budget, get the Tokina 11-16mm for ultra wide or the Tokina 10-17mm for fisheye. Both are about $500+ or so depending where you get it.

if you r looking 4 a fisheye 4 a crop sensor .. go with what fong just wrote - tokina 10-17 .. probably the cheapest for 10mm n it works best on crop ..other wise prepare to pay much more for a fix focal lengh of 8 or 10mm ...

^For a canon, what would be the best fisheye similar/equivalent to the nikkor 10mm. Did cannon ever make a fix focal length 10 or 8? I only know about the15mm, and it wouldn't work so great on my cropped body.

you can by shoot thru umbrellas - snoots - gels etc ...
you don't need to shoot with an umbrella or softboxes or anything ....
flashs are very subjective and its up to the users creativity and what they are going for .. so yes there proper techniques for how to use them but its notsomething writing in stone ....

I believe that Canon only makes the 15mm fisheye wish works best on a FF camera as on a crop sensor the 1.6x minimize the distortion ...that's why the Tokina 10-17 Sigma 4 - 8 - 10mm are IMHO better options ..

Go with the Ricoh! It's a really great camera. 165kicks already touched on a lot of the positives. It's macro function works up to 1cmfrom the subject. One thing I'll say about the Ricoh is that it's a bit loud for a camera (especially when focusing.) You get use to it though.Originally Posted by 165kicks

Honestly, the only other camera that is kind of debatable with the GX200 is the Panasonic LX3 (or the Leica D-Lux4, which is basically the same camera for $200more)

the d40 huh? where can i find it for a better price than $500? and what are you guys opinions on buying used cameras?
and lastly, the d40 or canon g10? same price just about but i see the canon has more mp. which of these cameras is more user friendly for beginners?
