Oregon Unveils New Football Uniforms

06/23/2009-GoDucks.com Print Email E-News RSS

EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon football team has made headlines with cutting-edge uniform designs and combinations for the past decade. Now the Ducks will take the field in 2009 wearing their most innovative and performance enhancing uniforms to date.

Nike designers have made advancements from Oregon's last update in 2006, which featured uniforms that were more durable and 28-percent lighter than the previous generation. The latest editions have improved ergonomics and ventilation characteristics, and feature laminate numbering that does not soak up any moisture and has an 85-percent weight differential compared to traditional tackle twill.

Laminate anti-abrasion shoulder reinforcement, in the form of wings, takes the place of "diamond plate" on the current jersey, a 200-percent savings in weight differential between materials. A lighter weight fabric has also been introduced for non-critical panels, trimming the weight from 7.46 ounces down to 5.5 as 75-percent of the panels from last year's jersey have been replaced.

Additional improvements include titanium d-rings on belts and the integration of Nike Pro Combat pads, eliminating pocket bags and structures that accommodate various aftermarket pads. The benefit of the latter is streamlined pads and added protection.

Total weight savings over the previous model is estimated at 25 percent.

While the student-athletes wearing the uniforms will feel the difference, college football fans will see a difference from UO's last generation of custom kits. The overall style is similar to the special edition "Lights Out" uniform the Ducks wore at home vs. Arizona last season.

Oregon will again have green, yellow, black and white as jersey options, but adds a second white top to the mix featuring different accent colors. For pants, the Ducks will choose from green, black, white or steel, which replaces yellow for this uniform cycle. And helmet options now come in green, black, white and carbon. The black and white paint schemes are new for 2009, while the carbon helmet replaces Oregon's yellow helmet.

All told, Oregon will have 80 different combinations (jersey/pant/helmet) at their disposal.

UO's numbering font, "Bellotti Bold," has also been updated. The new uniforms will feature version 2.0, which utilizes serifs to make the individual characters more distinct.

The new outfits were conceptualized by a team that included Todd Van Horne, global creative director for Nike apparel, Oregon alum Tinker Hatfield, Nike's vice president of innovation and renowned designer of the legendary Air Jordan shoe line, incoming UO athletic director Mike Bellotti, head coach Chip Kelly and current players Ed Dickson, Spencer Paysinger, Eddie Pleasant, Darron Thomas, Bo Thran and Walter Thurmond III. Former Duck Garren Strong was also involved in the process.

This marks the fifth significant evolution of football uniforms that Nike has developed for Oregon since the company first designed the game-day apparel for the Ducks' appearance in the 1996 Cotton Bowl.

Another change? But hey, when Nike's Father Phil Knight is an alum/booster/supplier, you can do that

at SOME point, wouldnt they want to be known for on field accomplishments instead of what they wear?

I know if I was an opposing coach, Id be hyping my team up before the game, "lets go beat their butts in their new cute uniforms"

I see your point but Oregon has just recently (last 10+ years) become consistently good at football so we need something to set us apart from other schools.Plus it REALLY helps with recruiting and gets our name out there.

What to wear? Oregon has 384 game-day choices

Updated 9/13/2006 11:08 AM ET
By Michael McCarthy and Kelly Whiteside, USA TODAY

The University of Oregon football team is finishing its biggest-ever uniform makeover - one that will give it a dizzying 384 combinations this season.

With help from Nike, Oregon is in its fourth full uniform redesign since the 1996 Cotton Bowl, giving the team almost as much renown for its garish collection of ever-changing attire as for its success on the field. Ranked 18th this week, the Ducks face more traditionally attired, and No. 11-ranked, Oklahoma at home Saturday.

SPORTS SCOPE:Uniforms no longer conforming

How will they be dressed? They keep it a secret until game day. Coach Mike Bellotti can choose from four colors of jerseys and pants: green, yellow, white and black. For now, he has only two helmet options: the green one worn since 1999, and a white one the team has not worn yet - but a yellow helmet is in production. Then there are four colors of socks and two colors of shoes.

The duds are 28% lighter than previous uniforms when dry, team officials say, and 34% lighter under wet conditions.

Last season, Bellotti let his seniors help pick the uniform for each game. This year, he and equipment manager Pat Conrad are deciding. "I haven't talked to them this year," Bellotti says, "because I have 22 seniors, and to get 22 guys to agree on something is tough enough. I have trouble myself."

Conrad predicts the team will repeat some ensembles over the 12-game regular season: "If we get on a roll, the seniors won't want to change."

The Ducks have been called "Team Nike" because of the largess of the Beaverton, Ore.-based athletic giant and its co-founder Phil Knight. He graduated from Oregon and has given tens of millions to the school and its athletic department.

Bellotti says the eclectic uniforms draw national attention and help recruiting efforts.

Paul Lukas, founder of Uni Watch (uniwatchblog.com), a website devoted to athletic uniforms, thinks the Ducks are a fashion disaster.

"This changes the notion of what's a uniform," he says. "They're not very uniform."

Or good-looking, he adds: "There's good design, and there's bad design. This is bad design."

And that's from 3 years ago.

you're a ****** if you choose where you play based off jerseys

It's just something to set them apart, more than anything... Nobody chooses a school based off it, but everybody is looking for those littlethings that'll set their school apart...

It's the reason you see Lane Kiffin talking out his *%# about other SEC coaches... It's just something to have your name in the media and have peopletalking about Tennessee... It works the same way with Oregon and those jerseys...

I think it's ******ed, and frankly I think their jerseys get uglier and uglier every year because they're trying so damn hard, but when you're likeOregon in the gran scheme of college football, you gotta take whatever little advantages you can get on the recruiting circuit...

If I had to guess now, Id say they will be very similar to the "blackout" jerseys they wore for 1 game last year. I doubt that design would appearfor 1 game and then never be seen again.
