Paint or dye?

I have a pair of shoes I was looking to customize. The shoes are grey leather and nubuck but I want to them black. I know I have to strip the wax and paint off the leather before I begin. Would I be able to dye the leather and nubuck? Or do I have to paint the leather and dye the nubuck? Thanks

Paint the leather, dye the nubuck, dye the nubuck first though.
