RIP New York Hip-Hop? (Need Some Feedback)

If you followed Stevie on tumblr & saw how he rolled out Rocky as if he was an artist he just discovered and had no relation to. It was low key genius. Stevie took his fanbase that he created through real___tumblr & that whole wave of vintage hip hop tumblrs and presented A$AP as a breath of fresh air to NY music. The Purple Swag video is what got the rest of the Internet paying attention.

He took old Houston / Memphis sound and what Spaceghostpurrp & Main Attrakionz were doing and made it more accessible.

I remember reading something about this.

Luckily, the music was good and it wasn't just a 1 hit wonder/gimmick situation. Rocky was able to last due to him following up the hype with a very strong body of work as his first mixtape.

Really intersting to hear the origins of A$AP.....and the strategic marketing they did to get on.

Yeah it was really genius bro. Back when he was just Eastside Stevie. Real*****tumblr had to have had like a million followers

all his posts did numbers. Bruh had a crazy collection of old hip hop mags tho Source, XXL, everything

When they dropped Purple Swag _'s didn't know wtf it was

and the visuals/aesthetic kinda  fit in with the content a lot his followers were already coming to his page and others for

And you hit it on the head, he curated the SGP/Main Attrakionz **** and gave it a lot more accessibility and widespread appeal. They kinda did some shady **** when they finally did link in and bring SGP to NY but that's another story.

Labels these days would KILL for a _ like this

I personally think that it's all on how the artist want his career to go. Although you do see more money independently there's also a lot of money that goes into doing that. I also think artist are realistic with themselves and have to gage their fanbase. In a Boogie's case I see him more as an artist who can make catchy songs and can be successful in the mainstream. As oppse to an Artist Like Joy Bad***** who might not have much radio success but his fanbase is huge and loyal, regardless of what the wave is in the game he can continue to do his sound and tour.

some artist styles are just better suited to be pushed by a machine.
Yea def depends what your goals are ...if you just trying get on the scene , put some singles out n get show/side $$ of that then no sense to sign to a major

That's what I would wanna do

Damn shame cause besides Clams Casino, SGP gave them the best ****.

Had no idea Yams was that involved.

It's even more safe to call Rocky and Ferg biters. What Yams said is the definition of biting.

Not surprised by that Yams info. There was an artist I saw live years ago, who was an opening act for Slick Rick. Dude was from Baltimore. I don't recall his name exactly. Anyway, I recorded some of his set and put it on youtube. This dude used to rap like a Golden Age rapper and he even redid some classic tracks like "Paid In Full". A couple of years later, I get a PM from his manager through youtube. He was thanking me for putting those videos up online but that he wanted me to take them down because his artist was moving in a new direction. He even sent me a link to a new song and it was some really ****** Trap sounding nonsense. CB4 really laid it out- rappers will try different gimmicks until one catches on.

 damn.

I wonder who it is.

I spoke on this in the RIP Yams thread back then but this is essentially what happened, according to Yams at least.

There's a unreleased interview Yams did, I think with Montreality, were he was kinda ****** up and being candid. Interview was out for a few hours and then Yams had them take it down but they re-released when he died (I think they ended up taking it down for good because everybody pressed them about putting it back out against his wishes).

Basically Yams said he didn't know Rocky but they had a mutual friend in Bari. Rocky was going to college in Alabama and would constantly be hitting him up telling him he tryna work etc when he got back to NYC.

In a round about way he said these dudes didn't really know **** about Memphis/Houston music like that but he pretty much told them that the Memphis/Houston underground **** was the next wave and if he wanted to work he needed to ditch his current sound and he was gonna help curate a new one. He literally said he gave him a laundry list of Memphis/Houston classics to listen to and study while he worked with him on different schemes, flows, etc. I'm willing to bet this played a part in why he wanted it taken down, Rocky had already been in interviews telling people he grew up on UGK, 3-6, etc on some "I can't help but sound like this" type ****

I'm not surprised at all to learn that about Rocky. I never felt like dude had a compelling personality/persona - like he was just a collection of carefully curated parts, each of which was designed to make him look as cool as possible. His first tape was definitely a decent listen, but nothing about him as an artist made me want to listen to him again. Musically I just never gave a **** about him as a person.

basically. first tape was damn good. debut album was ok. didn't meet expectation. everything else after that was just sort of "ehh". I don't check for him at all anymore.

If Steve's involvement was not apparent while he was alive, it should be crystal clear after his death. Aside from Rocky, the rest of the ASAP crew has been completely lost. Rocky is good because he's already a star. But Ferg just dropped a dud, Nast has not dropped a project and at this point is wasted potential, & Twelvy is nothing more than a generic NY rapper. Props to Ant for grinding and doing his own thing.

Don Season is flames. Don't know why these ****** and Dave East, Joey Badass, etc. aren't collaborating.

I've noticed videos that exposes dudes or fit the image they try to portray seem to come up missing on Youtube. Nice info.

I had a video I saw I was looking for that I couldn't find a rapper made.

Not even exaggerating when I say Ferg dropped the 2nd worst rap album of the year, 1st depending on how you categorize Views. The 1st 3 tracks off that Ferg album was like throwing pick 6s on your opening 3 possessions.

Always got the impression Yams was a genuine head. Check out his top albums on Complex, some interesting choices, especially the MJG which is super underrated.

I didn't know Yams was half Dominican. He said he lied about being half Dominican when Capital Punishment dropped.

Don't get me wrong, Puerto Ricans were definitely losing their minds when Pun dropped but I think most NY Latinos were proud. I know I was and I'm Dominican. And when you look at Terror Squad, they had Puerto Ricans, Blacks, Cubans, Dominicans, etc. Good read nonetheless.

I never finished it, because I gave up after the first three songs each time.
