09 Boxing Thread:: 12/12 Diaz.vs.Malignaggi HBO/Bradley.vs.Peterson Showtime

We both know that will never happen, especially when he's not a big attraction (yet).

I only see three options for Floyd right now:

Cotto
Shane
Manny.

Other than that, the landscape is too bleak. I don't think there's any up-and-comers Floyd would take on in the next few years. He's only going tofight if he is going to get paid.

And Paul is so scary is because he makes Floyd look like he's Mini-Me. His reach will give anyone problems.

Paul can go for a right hook and his arms are so long that his arms would wrap around dudes head and knock em on the left.

the volume at which he throws and his ability to use that reach....look at what he did to Winky....another defensive specialist

at 1st i was with cotto given Floyd MAJOR trouble in a fight but with in the past year... nawwwwwwwwwwww floyd would pick him apart

you better have speed and power to beat floyd

if you ask me would manny beat floyd? HELL NO, floyd would have no respect for his power and manny and his lack of D would walk into ALOT of power shots

That's pretty much how I'd view a Manny/Money fight..

Pac would go down at least once, possibly twice. Mayweather too smart to try and outslug Manny. He'd pick his spots and make him look foolish. Yeah Mannyhas speed, but it's not like Money is sluggish in the ring.

Either way whoever Floyd fights next is going to be a hell of a fight considering it is one of those three. Marquez was basically just training for Floyd toget back in the game with.

And I'm pretty sure Floyd would ruin Cotto's day as well. Cotto would just get frustrated with Floyds defense and look lost.

Man I hope Pac beats Cotto and somehow someway both sides agree to fight each other spring '10. As for the fight, very impressed with Floyd. Dude put on aclinic. I always rooted against him and was never REALLY a fan of him until summer of 08 in Vegas (whole diff personal story). All homerism aside, I think PBFwould pick apart Pac just from what i've seen tonight. Hopefully i'm wrong tho....

You see I thought that same thing too but Floyd defense is damn near impregnable

Those body shots become less effective when you landing them on a tricep
I agree.

I don't really know who possesses the ability to beat Floyd or exactly what it would take to do it at this point but between the likely candidates (M.A.C.,Pac & Shane) I think Miguel has the best chance.

I can see Pac-Man getting KO'd something ferociously.

Pac would be kept at bay with the jab at the end of that long reach advantage...Floyd would stay out of range of the flurries with his elusive defense andexcellent ring generalship and pick Manny apart.

Cotto is a better boxer imo and has the ability and size to apply that effective aggresiveness, which is the only way to beat Floyd. Plus he has the power inboth hands to seriously hurt him...Cotto has a lot of holes in his repetoire that MM is sure to take advantage off but I think it would be a closer, morecompetitive fight than the Pac-Man fight.

but winky ant slick like Floyd is tho, winky is more of put his hands up and block your shots where Floyd moves around and makes you miss

for all that reach Paul got his last 2 fights he didnt even use it much dude was just fighting inside

but at the end of the day paul is not a 147 fighter never should have been fighter there, he was only there for $$$ i think me a stringer agree on that

You see, Manny - PBF has alot to do with the weight which along with the split will be the sticking point to making the fight happen

It would be nice if Manny gave PBF the lion's share to fight at 140....but that ain't happening

Forget arguing on who will beat who i'm just looking forward to some good fights. I'm really hoping Shane and PBF get a fight going regardless of whatyall say Shane will bring out the best in PBF mark my words. I'm really looking forward to this Super Six tourney but am I the only one thinking JermainTaylor has no place in this tourney? That Froch vs. Dirrell fight is going to be really intresting IMO because Dirrell can't expect to dance around and winout of the US. Dirrell's camp is moving him along too fast IMO.

Yeah, even I knew the Winky - PBF comparisons was kind of a stretch

I just want PBF to fight someone who can give him some competition

This is what Mayweather is hoping 4. He doesn't want Pacman or Shane or a legit Welterweight.

why wouldnt floyd want pacman? there is nothing for him to be scared about

everyone in floyds camp wants pacman they see it as easy big time money. just look at the way they talk about dude they have no respect for him if he was tofight Floyd

That made no sense.

Cotto is more of a real welterweight than Pac-man and the Pacquiao payday would be significantly greater.

you know mayweather personally?

How you figure he don't wantto fight them?

I think we are going to see some good fight match ups with Mayweather. IRS took 5 MIL from his guarantee tonight and he defaulted on a $$180,000 car loan so itlooks like he'll have to fight mega fights to keep up with his lifestyle.

Wow, Mayweather defense is insane. And what I get from reading this post is that if Mayweather versed Cotto, Williams, Mosley and Pacman and beats all of them, there will be atleast 3 new top contenders that come in through the years that you guys will say Mayweather still has to beat to become the best. Okay so maybehe did dodge some fights but the fact remains that he had 40 fights and hasn't lost. All of the names mentioned above have lost fights, whether it was anupset or whatever.

With that being said I think Mayweather would beat Pacman, because the styles match up perfectly for a Mayweather win. Pacman is too aggressive and that'sexactly when Mayweather gets the best of the other opponent with his dodging and counter punches.

Calling a Spade a Spade 09.18.09: Welterweight Champions Gone Wild
Posted by Ryan Bates on 09.18.2009

While other welterweight champions and future champions bust theirs in the gym, WBC belt-holder Andre Berto seems to be too busy "living the life" to be concerned with boxing. Explanation: He's going slightly mad?

Here's a riddle for you: What do you call a welterweight champion who's only fought once this year, doesn't look to be fighting again in 2009, is the lucky recipient of robbery decisions, doesn't grant rematches, and is more content to party with rappers, roll in pretty cars, and attend fashion shows than train to defend his championship belt?

For once, the answer's not Floyd Mayweather Jr.

But it sure looks like him.

It isn't WBO champion Miguel Cotto. He started his training two weeks early for Manny Pacquiao.

It isn't former IBF champion Joshua Clottey, nor is it WBA champion (excuse me, "super champion" -- not that any of us consider original-flavor "champion" Vyacheslav Senchenko to actually be a champion) "Sugar" Shane Mosley. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth, as both Clottey and Mosley are two of the hardest working people in boxing, and both exceptionally humble.

That leaves... wait... does that leave WBC champion Andre Berto? But... where does he... wha... huh? I'm trying to think of sources of justification of this new-found "balla-status" from within his short, relatively lackluster resume. There's only one thing I can think of, so by process of elimination, let's call a spade a spade...

ANDRE BERTO IS OUT OF HIS DAMN MIND.

I mean, I don't have any other explanation, other than maybe since being possessed by Floyd Mayweather Jr. that the WBC welterweight belt is cursed to be a belt held by a paper champion who would rather focus on being a celebrity than a champion.

berto_30416.jpg

Really, Andre Berto is talented. He's got one of the best balances of speed and power I've seen in a while. Whereas many fighters have to select one or the other, Berto has both. He'll get inside the pocket before you know, and when he's in there, he'll rip those punches off -- no pitty-pats here.

But he doesn't act like a champion, in or out of the sport. For one, he certainly never earned the belt. He got it because The Pretty Money Boy Child "retired" from boxing, where he focused on important tasks. Like professional wrestling. And internet commercials. Therefore, Berto's bout in June 2008 became a bout for the WBC welterweight title. And that was against who? Miki Rodriguez? Who? That's right. Another chump brought in to make Berto look good. Ironically, Berto's career was headed in a favorable direction at that time, being brought up on veterans like David Estrada and European champions like Michel Trabant.

bertovstrabant68_2231.jpg

After that, Berto gets a 33-6 Stevie Forbes, who was knocked around by Oscar de la Hoya only four months earlier. My apologies to Forbes, but Steve Forbes is someone to fight to prove you deserve a title shot, not someone you fight to prove you deserve to keep the title.

Then Andre ran into welterweight contender Luis Collazo. Collazo, in recent history, had lost a close, controversial decision to Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton in May of 2006, then faced the previously-mentioned hard-working Shane Mosley nearly nine months later. While he had picked up some minor wins between that bout and Berto, he was still seen as an "easy" night for the WBC champion.

"Easy" was not the right word. Collazo picked apart at Berto's flaws, and took advantage of the champion's desire to "look impressive" instead of focusing on winning to go all twelve rounds in a fight that showed us a lot more from a re-inspired Luis Collazo than from the same old Andre Berto.

berto-collazo3_30417.jpg

But you could smell the home cooking in the air, when Berto "squeaked out" the win, 114-113, 114-113, and the absurd 116-111. Felony, thy name is the South. Andre Berto stole the belt from Luis Collazo. To this day, I continue to go on the record and say that Luis Collazo is your true WBC welterweight champion.

Collazo's team wanted a rematch; instead, Berto chose to take on a heavy Juan Urango, making his move from 140 to easily lose by unanimous decision.

Berto should give Collazo that rematch. At the very least he should be considering who his next title defense will be against, this time choosing an opponent of a caliber that shows that Andre Berto deserves to be the WBC welterweight champion.

Instead, Andre Berto is more focused on Chad Ochocinco, of the Cincinnati Bengals.

"What? Ryan, you're crazy. That's not even the right sport!" Therein my point lies. Andre Berto is more concerned with being noticed than being champion. Ochocinco, who himself is obviously a little looney as evidenced by the fact that he legally changed his name to match his jersey number, has taken up a little pugilism and says that he can exploit the flaws in Andre Berto's fight style, and could even go so far as to beat him. What started as friendly verbal jabs de-evolved right before our eyes on Twitter and in the boxing media into a full-blown battle, with Berto doing everything but calling for Ochocinco's head on a platter.

Now if only he could do that with real welterweights instead.

In fact, the last thing on Andre Berto's mind are real welterweights. The belt-holder is more content to party with basketball stars in Las Vegas during summer league, hang with hip-hop artists in Miami and Atlanta, and generally tell everyone how great he is via his Twitter and Facebook accounts. But when faced with questions of the humility he used to have about him, Berto responds that humility got him to where he is now.

If it ain't broke...

berto_29732.jpg

The belt-holder has even gone so far as to plan an eight-city "Birthday Tour" stopping to party in eight major cities with his entourage, which so far has included Miami, Houston, and New York City. He continues to sing his own accords, talking about the celebrities he's partying with, and getting all the little club-goers to pee their thong panties about being in the same city as he is. He's even attended fashion shows in New York with fellow fighters Danny Jacobs and Andre Dirrell.

So what's wrong with enjoying your time off? If you're Andre Dirrell, nothing. You know you have a huge fight coming up in the Super Six super middleweight tournament, and you're training hard for it, so a night off is by all means acceptable and welcome. And if you're Danny Jacobs, nothing. You just won a bout against the tough, wily Ishe Smith last month, you deserve a break today. Andre Berto is in neither of these positions; actually, he's in the polar opposite position. No fights since May, none on the horizon, and yet that belt is still on his waist.

To top it all off, Berto has also gone on the record with MTV News saying that he would like to take on hip-hop mogul Jay-Z in the ring.

The WBC welterweight champion wants to box JAY-FRIGGIN-Z? Who does this guy think he is, Kanye West?

In fact, Andre Berto shares more in common with Kanye West and Floyd Mayweather Jr. than other champions at his weight like Shane Mosley and Joshua Clottey. He shares a key trait with those two, which can also be seen in the new face of "Jon & Kate Plus Eight" reality star Jon Gosselin and rock star/train wreck Courtney Love: they all have some sort of a "god complex," like their actions are above everyone else. They deserve the limelight, and if they do something bad or naughty, well, you just thank your lucky stars you're on the same planet as these people no matter what they do.

However, Love was addicted to most drugs in existence, explaining much of her god-complex behavior. Kanye West may have a problem with alcohol, or he may be a %$%*@%%. Floyd Mayweather didn't get enough love as a child, and now is addicted to attention. And Jon Gosselin, well, he just might be going through mid-life crisis.

What's your excuse, Andre? Are you just still a little child? Or do we need to get Dr. Drew on the line for you?

Meanwhile, Mosley prepares for a bout in January, which may cost you your belt. If not then, Joshua Clottey is eyeballing it too. So is Miguel Cotto -- and if he loses to Manny Pacquiao, you better believe that he's going to be in a foul mood. And behind them, you still have welterweight names such as Zab Judah, Alfonso Gomez, Jesus Soto-Karass, plus super welterweights like Paul Williams and Kermit Cintron who would cut a few extra pounds to capture Berto's belt.

And, you never know. Floyd Mayweather Jr. might finally snap out of it, stop picking on little guys, and decide he wants his welterweight belt back. Stranger things have happened.

This past Wednesday, September 16, at 2:39pm Pacific time, Andre Berto said via his Twitter: "I know how u feel now Twitter has been gettin me in trouble lately I might have to cancel my subscription!!!!!!"

Don't let the door hit your $*% on the way out. Unless, of course, the door is the one leading back to the gym, "champ."
