My boys were talking about how it is a myth, and nobody really receives any benefits from it.

I disagreed

The scene from American History X hits on the dot imo on affirmative action. Why should a lesser competent police officer get hired over a more competentofficer because of race? Police officer's are the last place where race should come into play in the hiring process when they ultimately can decide lifeand death.

Better qualified should be hired > less qualified but racially diverse.

For example, a white male needs like a 172+ to get into Harvard Law
a black male needs like a 165 max to get into Harvard Law...

smokin.gif

And before anyone gets their panties in a bunch, this advantage is given to African Americans/Hispanics/Asians/etc...

Not really affirmative action, more like underrepresented minority status..
grin.gif

Women have actually been the biggest beneficiaries of this all, so far.

See that makes me mad. I would be irate if I didn't get accepted to Harvard Law because my spot was given to someone who scored 10 pointslower than me.

It's funny that this topic comes up. We were discussing Affirmative Action in Brazil because they are undergoing their Civil Rights Movement and I wassurprised how many white students were against AA in the states
smh.gif
At least I got a view of how my classmates view me being in the school. They always had thewhole pie now that minorities are getting a piece they cry reverse racism. We need AA unfortunately and taking it away would do more harm than good. Just lookat UCLA's 2007 freshman class. Only 100 blacks made up a couple thousand freshman.

African-Americans and other minority groups here please support the Brazilian AA movement. They are going through the same struggle we did and still do.

Not quite that easy, its offsetting hundreds of years when minorities were denied Harvard law. If they were losing their spot to a legacy with the same scorethere is no outrage?

That is racism

Well let's see my 172 is more deserving than your 165. Why should I be punished because Harvard is underrepresented? If you're going tolower criteria for one race, it should be lowered very everybody.

And don't give me it's making reprimands for the way minorities were treated from the 1800s-1970 because in this day and age, none of us are goingthrough what our ancestors dealt with. I didn't chose to be white, so now I have to face punishment because the white people before me decided it was rightto take advantage of a group of people to better their own needs?

Jobs/Colleges should go to the better qualified person, plain and simple.

so taking the student with the lower score is the right thing to do bc he is of a different ethnicity?

thats as dumb of as a statement about American history X... how they gonna hire a less qualified cop bc of race ????

I would be mad if they accepted someone with a lower score then myself bc of color..... just my .02

You suffer nothing, stop complaining.

Its called a 300 year head start, and if you still couldn't get into Harvard with that, sucks for you.

These standardized tests are made for whites, by whites. The fact that affirmative action is still needed is deplorable. Lemme guess, you say that affirmativeaction is reverse racism right

Now that's the misconception... I understand this is a hypothetical situation so here is my hypothetical answer: You don't have a "spot"because you didn't get a good enough score, or your extra curriculars weren't good enough, or your application wasn't good enough. What someoneelse did to get in is none of your concern, you didn't do well enough, therefore you don't get in. It's that simple. You being the applicant thatdidn't get in amongst the (let's say non-affirmative action) students should've done better. There is a clear reason why under representedminorities receive "benefits" in situations like these, and for the most part, it's only leveling the playing field. I really don't feel likegoing over (again) why AA is a necessity but if you're interested just google "The Invisible White Knapsack". The point is "your spot"didn't get taken... you didn't have a spot, you didn't get in, because of no one but yourself.

Get your grades up, score well on your SAT's, maintain a high GPA, network, etc and you won't have to worry about AA getting you to where you needto be and white folk won't be cryin' foul play.

laugh.gif
Your spot. How is it your spot? That's exactly what the student's said about the AA situation and minorities. They never took into considerationthe economic and social implications that brings about difficulties for us getting into colleges and universities.

But you wouldn't be if they accepted a white male with a lower score?

Or what about a woman?

Or handicapped?
because 9 times out of 10 thats what is happening.

Explain how it's reverse racism? At the end of the day I'm not losing anything because of affirmative action. It's just dumb to chosethe lesser qualified student/worker for a job on the basis of race. Would you want a really good doctor to perform surgery on you or a decent doctor who wasonly hired because of his race?

Hypotheticall speaking I score a 172 on my LSATS, someone else scores a 165, we have the same extra curricular activities, recommendations etc.but he gets in because Harvard needs more minorities, and I get denied. What does that say? It says I just wasted the past 3 years studying and busting my buttto do well and score as high as I can.

Simply put, you hire/accept the best qualified person.

It says you didn't do well enough. You failed. You don't get in. You can't blame anyone but yourself because you didn't do as well as themajority of the other applicants that got in. Refer to my reply on page 1 of this topic.

Scoring 10 points higher than you is now my fault?
