Have you ever been put in a situation where you knew you were ruining someone's life and felt bad about it?

I do feel for people when taking em to jail SOMETIMES. If I've contacted you because of a radio call then there's a good chance you're already in the wrong. For major/serious crimes I have no remorse really. Just depends on the situation. People cry in the backseat all the time and tell me I'm ruining their life and then I look up their history and they've been arrested plenty of times already.

Usually on domestic violence calls is where the guilt SOMETIMES comes in. For my department, during a DV call if there is absolutely any kind of unwanted physical contact then somebody is getting arrested. Its a mandatory arrest to basically diffuse the situation so it does not escalate. That was put into place due to people coming back after we left and then the situation getting worse. I've arrested people for ripping their husband's shirt. I've arrested people for pushing their boyfriend in the shoulder. A lot of the time too you're taking the wrong person. In those DV situations basically we just separate the parties, take each statement, and decide who was the dominant aggressor. Sometimes one half of the couple holds back on their story because they don't want the other person to get into trouble but it ends up screwing themselves.

Yeah I do believe there are. It is very illegal and they would be fired if caught

I'm kind of indifferent. To me it really depends on what you did and what your attitude is. Traffic stops for me usually end in a warning unless......

1. what you did was pretty egregious

2. you have a really bad attitude

3. you've have multiple warnings before

2. OC. More often than not its when people are acting up in the back seat and kicking windows. I've actually never struck anybody with my baton.

What steps do you take to find people with warrants, since that's your main goal?

We have a system that says who has warrants. If I know them enough to know where they hang out then just look at those places. If I don't know them I ask around (both officers and public). Homeless people are actually a really good source of information BTW.

1. Cops came to my door once on a complaint of assault. They showed up to my door after midnight. I felt like they were hoping to catch me either doing something illegal or slipping in a confused state to get me to say something to incriminate myself. I asked if I was under arrest and then told them to have a good night because I have nothing to say. As a cop, why the **** would YOU go to someone's house at that hour?

2. I once had a street fight and got grabbed from behind by a cop while I was defending myself. No idea it was a cop so I threw an elbow and subsequently got my *** beat by a group of cops. Should I have sued? Was I wrong for protecting myself?

3. When can a citizen disobey a cop (legally)? How do we prove we're not lying?

4. Why do cops lie so damn much? (reference the multiple shootings of unarmed black people)

5. With so many cops being domestic abusers why are y'all so quick to believe women in those scenarios? Y'all beat everybody up off duty. Why can't anyone else?

6. An obvious off duty cop tried to provoke me to fight by invading my space a month ago at a convenience store. After politely asking him to give me space I cursed him out and then he came with the bs trying to get me to swing. Had I fallen for it, would he have arrested me or shot me?

Power trips? Not the majority of the time but enough. Then you get to know who those guys are and try to avoid them. They don't usually break policy but often their actions are unnecessary.

used to work in law enforcement about for about 3 years..... as a police officer treat everyone with respect just cause you got the power don't go around acting like a douche all the time.  There is already a bad stigma about cops.  I see a lot of rookie cops trying to "PROVE" themselves to the rest of their colleagues by  doing all kinds of crazy crap....

Best thing is be approachable, respect everyone, its ok to be a self starter and motivated but most of the times the CALLS WILL FALL IN YOUR LAP.

I'll never forget that night..... I was one of the first people inside the theatre, bodies were everywhere with emts running out of equipment trying to get everybody that was hurt or dead out.

Much props and respect to you. I've never been in a situation like that and I pray I never am, but if it happens I'm ready. You have to be.

1. Though I may not share your exact viewpoint, I get it. I'm out there doing what I do handling what I see/observe or what is brought to my attention through a radio call or by somebody flagging me down. I, and the vast majority, are not out there to "keep minorities and poor people encaged, enraged, and disenfranchised." If you did something to deserve the discipline then you deserve it. Though we do have what they call "letter of the law" and "spirit of the law." Which basically means the enforcement is at our discretion, unless its something horrid of course. I search for crime, not a social or economic class.

2. Never snitched on a fellow officer. I've never witnessed anything worth snitching for. I've thrown drugs and paraphernalia away to lessen a charge for somebody if they're cool. Plenty of times if the person is cool I've let them toss their drugs or step on their pipe and I let them walk away.

My first point was part of the bigger picture you may not be privy to yet. Your scope is relatively small but if you are as decent as you come off maybe you will see what me and many think about cops and their purpose.

Another question, how prepared are you and fellows officers to handle the mental disorders of civillians. Bi-polar, dementia, schizo? I will say NYPD might some of the worst human beings just off what I see them do to the mentall impaired. It's embarrassing we pay taxes to feed those animals.

1. I think the biggest fear is not necessarily breaking policy nor their actions being recorded, rather what they say is what they worry about most. If you've seen End of Watch then that is a good depiction of a conversation in a patrol car. Just don't want to be recorded joking around like that.

4. I'm sure it's real to some extent. I've never had to utilize it though fortunately.

5. During a traffic stop just listen to the officer/deputy. Attitude will really get you nowhere. No sudden movements. And if you really feel you were wronged complain after the fact or call for a supervisor at that very moment.

6. I have never fired my gun on patrol.

7. I think they should be held to a standard of physical fitness but it's not a requirement. It is in the academy but once you get out its on your whether or not you stay in shape. You should though because you should be in good shape anyway, and you may get in a situation where your fitness and conditioning will be tested in the field.

Learning to trust the police again. Had a detective basically abuse her power. She added her own stuff to the police report and I think she had a feeling my ex was lying but basically went along with it anyway. She called my job and told them I had been arrested. Super dirty, not even policy. Beat the case but showed me how easily they can railroad you.

How strong is your union? Can bad cops be fired for just cause? It seems like in any other non union profession (or in right to work states), you can be fired for anything. Why can't they just fire a trigger happy cop who is staining the reputation of your department? Even if its deemed justified, the black eye seems like enough to part ways with the bad apple.

Do you get along with your bosses? With that, if they were to fire a "bad cop", it seems like the brotherhood is strong enough to protest in some way and cause a huge hassle. It feels like thats why 99% of these police shootings never convict the cops of wrong doing.

Do you have monthly quotas? If there was no crime, would you have a job (hence some sort of creating the hostility)? Do you get awards or bonuses based on arrest numbers or convictions that go through?

Is there a lot of turn around in employment (ie transfers/retirees or firings)?

The availability of non stop OT irks me. I know many in the medical field (who are also state/county funded). Our hard earned tax dollars shouldnt go towards paying people too much.

Last question, in a lot of these police shootings lately, there have been 6 or so officers on the scene, and only one actually firing their weapon. Would you stop a co worker from doing something stupid? Even with police beatings of civilians, its literally always just 1 bad apple and 6-7 just stand around. Have you ever seen anyone intervene (higher up boss maybe). The union makes cops feel invicible. Thanks for answering. Things will never change though. There is never liability for the bad apples.
