  • Varun Manish Chheda, a 20-year-old Purdue University student, was murdered in his dorm room in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Wednesday.
  • A preliminary autopsy revealed that the data science senior had died of “multiple sharp-force traumatic injuries” to the head and neck.
  • Chheda’s roommate, 22-year-old Ji Min Sha, was taken into custody after confessing to killing him with a knife.
  • At an initial hearing, Sha told reporters that he was “very sorry” but claimed that he was “blackmailed,” without elaborating.
  • Sha, an international student from South Korea, is set to be formally charged on Thursday.

Elderly woman mauled to death by Dogo Argentino dogs while on morning walk in California​



  • Soon Han, an 80-year-old woman, died after being mauled by two Dogo Argentinos in San Bernardino County, California, on Friday.
  • Han was out for a morning walk when the pair of canines attacked her near the intersection of Vinton Street and Mesa Road in Baldy Mesa.
  • Han suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • The Dogo Argentinos have been taken into custody, and their owner was cooperating with the ongoing investigation, according to investigators.

Michigan man sentenced to life in prison for murder of former pro poker player​


  • Jeffery Morris, 62, was found guilty of first-degree murder and felony murder following a deliberation that lasted less than an hour in Oakland County, Michigan, on Friday.
  • Morris, who was arrested on July 31, 2020, was accused of sexually assaulting former professional poker player Susie Zhao, 33, before setting her on fire.
  • Zhao’s charred corpse was found near the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area in White Lake Township, Michigan, on July 13, 2020.
  • Addressing the jury during the closing argument, lead prosecutor John Skrzynski said that in Morris’ eyes, sex “is violence, is death, is inflicting pain, it’s cruel. He’s a killer and a liar, a liar and a murderer, a liar and a pervert.”
  • Morris, a homeless convicted sex offender, has been in Michigan’s public registry since 1989 — under several offender searches — with a lifetime registration.
  • He is scheduled for sentencing on Nov. 10.

  • A vigil in honor of Reyes’ memory was held at the store on Monday.
  • Police are still looking for one male and two female suspects who are all believed to be 18 or under.

Las Vegas police release bodycam footage of late-night shootout that killed 23-year veteran Truong Thai​



  • The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has released body camera footage of the shootout that resulted in the death of Officer Truong Thai.
  • Thai responded to a call at about 1 a.m. made by the wife of the 24-year-old suspect Tyson Hampton, who she said had beaten her.
  • Thai, who had been a member of the LVMPD since 1999, died from a gunshot wound to the torso while being transported to a hospital.
  • Hampton was arrested with the help of a Metro K-9 unit. He now faces eight felony charges, including murder and attempted murder as well as battery and domestic battery, according to police.
  • He is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center.

Seattle’s first Asian mayor cuts anti-Asian hate crime fund by 50 percent​



  • Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has reportedly slashed nearly 50% of the city’s anti-Asian hate crime fund as a consequence of a $140 million deficit.
  • The fund will be reduced to $166,000 from more than $300,000, according to the mayor’s 2023 budget proposal.
  • Even with the deficit, the city will allot funds to new programs, including $1 million for a controversial gun detection system.
  • Attacks against Asian Americans persist in Seattle, with the most recent reported case involving feces being thrown at the home of an Indian American Seattle City Councilmember.
  • National coalition Stop AAPI Hate said the defunding “sends a message that our community's needs are not important” and that investing in community organizations is “not a priority” for Harrell’s administration.
