Man arrested for holding 88-year-old Asian woman at gunpoint in San Francisco home invasion robbery​


  • Gustavo Ribeiro-Quintanilha, 20, was arrested in connection with a home invasion robbery in San Francisco that held an 88-year-old Asian woman at gunpoint on April 7.
  • Ribeiro-Quintanilha is believed to be one of two men who barged into the victim’s home at the 100 block of Louisburg Street near Geneva Avenue.
  • The victim was alone at the time of the incident. The pair of perps allegedly forced her into a bathroom at gunpoint as they ransacked her home.
  • Ribeiro-Quintanilha was arrested last week and arraigned on Thursday.
  • He has been charged with multiple felonies, including robbery, burglary, elder abuse and false imprisonment, according to The San Francisco Standard.
  • He remains in custody and is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 8 and Nov. 17.

  • Two years after the attack, the 42-year-old musician shared that he has now found the will to return to music through the help and support of the people around him.
  • After spending five months in Japan, he decided to return to New York and conducted his first performance in the city since the attack at the Blue Note Jazz Club in Aug. 2021.
  • Unno also released his new album "Get My Mojo Back" in March to represent his desire to return to music and to express his gratitude to those who helped him during his recovery.
  • According to Unno, he hopes his music can inspire people toward better communication as "prejudice is about not accepting others, not even trying to understand them."

Asian business owners targeted in string of Virginia burglaries​



  • Authorities in Henrico County, Virginia, have warned residents of home burglaries that target Asian business owners, with at least two incidents reported in the last month.
  • News of the burglaries comes after an Indian restaurant in the same county suffered an anti-Asian vandalism on its 27th anniversary last month.
  • My Lan Tran, executive director of the Virginia Asian Chamber of Commerce, organized a public safety meeting on Tuesday to raise awareness of the incidents.
  • Henrico police are urging residents to keep an eye on suspicious activity, inspect their homes for security weaknesses, secure valuables such as cash and jewelry and invest in surveillance systems.

Cincinnati man charged with hate crime for anti-Asian attack on student​


  • Darrin Johnson, 26, was charged with federal hate crime on Wednesday in connection with an anti-Asian attack against a University of Cincinnati (UC) student on Aug. 17, 2021.
  • The incident, which occurred in the 200 block of Calhoun Street within the campus, allegedly saw Johnson punch the male victim on the side of his head, causing him to fall and hit the bumper of a parked car.
  • Prior to physically attacking the student, Johnson allegedly threatened his life for “bringing the kung flu here” and told him to “go back to your country.”
  • Johnson, who was arrested on Thursday, had just served a year-long sentence at county jail after pleading guilty to the attack in October 2021.
  • If convicted of the federal hate crime charge, Johnson could face up to 10 years in jail.

Asian man punched, shot with gel pellets by muggers on NYC subway​


  • A 34-year-old Asian man fell victim to a violent attack involving a gel gun at the New York City subway on Sunday, according to reports.
  • A group of muggers believed to be in their late teens or early 20s allegedly punched the victim and shot him with the fake gun, which police say used water-absorbing polymer as “ammo.”
  • While attacking the victim, the suspects tried to snatch his gold chain but failed.
  • When the victim got off the train, the suspects reportedly followed him to the platform, snatched his $500 prescription glasses and smacked him in the face.
  • The suspects, who were last seen boarding a Jamaica-bound F train, remain at large.

Over $1 million stolen from Asian American families in targeted robberies, Pennsylvania police say​


  • The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) are investigating a series of residential burglaries that are believed to have been carried out by three or four people who have stolen a million dollars in cash and property.
  • The burglars have specifically targeted the homes of Asian Americans who own Chinese restaurants throughout the state.
  • The PSP suggested business owners take extra precaution by securing cash and valuables in their homes and installing motion sensor lights, surveillance cameras and alarm systems.
  • Authorities also reminded owners to be aware of anyone who might be following them home and to make sure their vehicles are locked while they are at work.

  • A wedding photographer was left bloodied after struggling with two armed robbers as they attempted to take his camera and other equipment outside the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco’s Marina District at around 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday.
  • “I was just freaked out. I tried to protect the client's memories. The bride was crying all the time," the photographer, who wished to remain anonymous for his safety, told ABC7 News.
  • The Palace of Fine Arts has become such a popular area for car break-ins and other criminal activities that authorities have put up signs warning people visiting the monumental structure to take their valuables with them before leaving their cars.
  • Another incident was reportedly recorded outside the Palace of Fine Arts earlier that day, showing a robber fleeing the scene with a bag of camera equipment. Photographer @ramaphotovideo, who allegedly captured the incident, posted a PSA on Instagram advising other photographers in San Francisco to be careful.

  • Christian M. Lynch, 26, has been arraigned on multiple charges in connection with the kidnapping, torture and rape of a 64-year-old Asian woman in Quincy, Massachusetts, on Saturday.
  • The victim, who was heading to work, was allegedly kidnapped at Wollaston station and forced into a vehicle that took her to an apartment on East Elm Avenue.
  • The senior woman was then bound, strangled and sexually assaulted for the next 11 hours at the apartment, where she thought she was “going to die,” according to reports.
  • At around 6 p.m., she was dropped off at a parking lot at Westgate Mall in Brockton, where a passerby found her and called the police.
  • Lynch has also been charged with attempted kidnapping and assault with the intent to rape in connection with another incident that occurred 20 minutes earlier, in which he allegedly targeted another Asian woman.
  • Lynch is currently being held without bail and will return to court for a dangerousness hearing next week.

Man called ‘Asian pig,’ assaulted for refusing to give up seat on NYC subway​


  • A man and two women are wanted in New York City after allegedly punching and kicking an Asian man for refusing to give up his seat on a Manhattan subway.
  • During the attack, the trio of perps allegedly used anti-Asian remarks, including calling the man an “Asian pig.”
  • The male victim, 42, was accompanied by a female Asian victim, 41, who was also ordered to give up her seat.
  • Police have released images of the suspects and are urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
New York police are looking for three individuals accused of assaulting an Asian man for refusing to give them his seat on a Manhattan subway.
 

Man shot, robbed of Rolex in LA’s Koreatown may be a Korean prince​


  • A man between 25 and 30 years old was shot during a robbery outside the luxury Kurve apartment complex in the Westlake District in Los Angeles on Nov. 18.
  • The man, who was driving a Rolls-Royce Phantom, was robbed of his Rolex watch and three gold chains by two male suspects.
  • He was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
  • According to reports, the Rolls-Royce Phantom is registered to the Korean prince Andrew Lee, who is the founder of VPN security service London Trust Media.
  • It is currently unknown whether Lee was the victim or if he was at the scene during the robbery.
  • No arrests have been made. Police are searching for two suspects who are both described as Black men.
A man who was shot and robbed near Koreatown in Los Angeles may have ties to the Korean royal family.
