Whoever takes control of the Bears' offense for next season will be the beneficiary of the rough times Ron Turner and his staff went through developingsome young players.
That is what the ousted offensive coordinator told the Tribune Tuesday after he and five other assistant coaches were fired in a one-sided housecleaning atHalas Hall.
"No question, we developed some young players,'' Turner said. "We had three new offensive linemen, two of which had really never playedbefore. We had Chris (Williams) playing on the right side, a position he hadn't played, and we had three receivers that had never played before with a newquarterback.
"You look at where we were at the start and then at the end, they're different players. You don't just bring in a quarterback with that many newplayers and click right away. It takes time, sometimes years. There's no question, it's going to take off.
Turner directed the offense for the past five seasons and served in the same role from 1993 to 1996. Erik Kramer and Jay Cutler hold many of theorganization's single-season passing records under Turner.
General manager Jerry Angelo has praised the development of the young corps of wide receivers, including Devin Aromashodu, Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett, andthe Bears are pleased with new parts on the line moving forward with Williams now at left tackle and Frank Omiyale at left guard. Why push only offensivecoaches out the door when that was the side of the ball that showed progress at the end of a three-year stagnant run by the defense?
"I'm not going to get into the nitty gritties of all the things that we talked about but obviously we decided that that was a decision that we madethat gave us the best chance to win next year,'' Angelo said.
Turner, who said after Sunday's season-ending victory at Detroit that he expected to return with one season remaining on his contract, declined to say ifhe and his assistants were scapegoats.
"I'm not going to get into all of that,'' he said. "I did the best job I could with what I had.''
Line coach Harry Hiestand and tight ends coach Rob Boras politely declined to comment when reached. They're expected to seek jobs in the NFL. Also let gowere quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton, offensive line assistant Luke Butkus and assistant wide receivers coach Charles London.
That leaves wide receivers coach Darryl Drake and running backs coach Tim Spencer as the only holdovers for the new coordinator, one Turner believes will havesome young talent to build around.

im so glad this guy is gone, how many screen passes are we gonna use, jeeeez, we got 3 good TE's and hardly utilize them as much as we can, his playcallingwas so basic!!!!! i would have liked to see Shanny here, but its all good.....

Former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis is interested in the possibility of coming to Chicago, and he is currently holding off pursuing a similar role with theKansas City Chiefs because of Tuesday's developments at HalasHall, according to a source close to the Bears.
Weis was the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriotsfrom 2000-04, playing a role in three Super Bowl championships. He also was the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets from 1997-99.
Weis was fired as Notre Dame's head coach on Nov. 30 after a five-year record of 35-27.
Former St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz also said he"absolutely" would be interested in replacing Turner.

Martz, who was the coordinator for the Rams' "Greatest Show on Turf" offense that turned Kurt Warner into an MVP and won a Super Bowl, said Tuesday hehas not been contacted by the Bears but won't campaign for the job.
"Absolutely, of course I would [be interested]," Martz said. "But I've never talked to anybody or been contacted by anybody.
"It would be unfair to [Bears coach Lovie Smith] to jump ahead in any process and be involved in it. We'll just wait and see whether thingsdevelop."
As expected, the Bears fired offensive coordinator Ron Turner on Tuesday. The Bears also parted ways with tight ends coach Rob Boras, offensiveassistant/assistant offensive line coach Luke Butkus, quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton, offensive line coach Harry Hiestand and offensive assistant/assistantwide receivers coach Charles London.
Martz led the NFL's top offense in 1999, as the Rams averaged 32.9 points a game and Warner passed for 41 touchdowns. Martz took over for *%#+ Vermeilthe following season and compiled a 53-32 record in five-plus seasons, including an appearance in the Super Bowl in 2001. The Rams fired him five games intothe 2005 season.
Smith was Martz's defensive coordinator from 2001-03.
Martz, 58, was the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lionsin 2006 and 2007 and had the same job with the San Francisco 49ersin 2008. He has served as an analyst with the NFL Network this season.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Perry Fewell is scheduled to interview with the New YorkGiants and the Chicago Bears for their defensivecoordinator openings while his coaching future with the BuffaloBills remains uncertain.
Fewell finished the season as the Bills interim coach, but was fired along with the rest of the coaching staff. Fewell, though, is a candidate for the headcoaching job and had a four-hour interview with Bills general manager Buddy Nix on Monday.
Fewell's interview with the Giants is scheduled for Thursday; his visit with the Bears is next week. After his interview with the Bills, Fewell said heconsiders himself a long shot for the job with the team preferring an experienced coach.
Not sure I want anything to do with anything Buffalo Bills related... just my 2cents.

I'm about to end my fanship with this organization... they have proven time and time again that they give no %@!@ about winning. There is no way in hellthat Lovie deserves to remain on as Head Coach... We make a step in the right direction and fire Ron Turner.. then take 2-4 steps in the wrong direction...Weis was interested we didn't even schedule a sit down... Haven't said #*%$ to Martz instead contact Jeremy Bates, the man who is at the helm when USChas one of its worst year offensively... Proven Coaches, Proven Systems, and we shun them.
