Being educated...for what?

def not my nature to walk around life not knowing whats what

but yes it is somewhat of a burden being one of the only people who cares or understands the impact of the things around you

you're either neo or the regular dull dude who has no opinion on the other side of the spectrum

neo it is for me

I may not know much but according to my paperwork I got 2 degrees. Lets just say I'm in a whole diff tax bracket than alot of people I grew up with.

With that said I will def be getting a third degree down the line... *birdman hand rub*

I mean I get a basic education, and a mechanical education (anything that grants you a tangible skill, from woodworking to nuerosurgery). But the more I read, the more I learn, the more I form my own ideas, I'm starting to think actually learning stuff, understanding how the world works makes you an outcast. You sound like a dbag always "correcting" people. People feel the need to argue all the time. If you have actually have your own opinion, people look at you like a weirdo. And overall, having your own ideas about the way the world works, based on experience, information, knowledge you've obtained, quiet contemplation etc. makes you sound like a crazy person.

What exactly is the point of "being educated" you relate to people a lot better if you just follow pop culture, copy and paste your ideas from popular blogs and get your general identity from whatever the people around you think.
You sir, have just described a typical day on NT

Bottom line, being a dummy isn't cool. Go to school, get your degree(s) because it's required to get through life easier. Having a degree(s) =/= mean you are intelligent at all, it just means you did the work to obtain the degrees. There are plenty of dummies in this world with multiple degrees that make me scratch my head on the daily. It's good to be a lifelong student because learning never stops, in or out of school.

gotta love this economy we're in.

and for OP..no, there's no such thing as being too smart, although it starts to get lonely at da top once you're alot brighter then

your peers...

Too many people equate "being smart" with actual formal education at a university.

In a lot of cases I've encountered first hand, I notice that a lot of "smart" people are miserable; burdened by their thoughts. Inversely, a lot of "dumb" people seem as though they live in bliss.

100% fact

A lot of it has to do with picking your battles. I hear incorrect things all the time about a lot of topics, but I rarely correct them because it just isn't worth the time. The information that I pursue has value for me, personally, which is exactly why I pursue it. You shouldn't pursue knowledge to impress other people. It should have meaning to you. For example, don't become a lawyer if you aren't passionate about it: it will make you miserable. And also, intelligence is not exclusively linked to formal education. Plenty of intelligent people do not have a college degree and vice versa is also true.

Also, choosing who you spend your time with is important. If your closest circle is full of people with few shared interests, then you will feel like your education and background is a burden. The perspective, experiences, etc. that come from your background are an important part of who you are as a person, and if you don't interact with people that accept/value that part of you, perhaps you need to find a better group of people to interact with.

I absolutely believe that knowledge is power, but you have pursue it for the right reasons, or it could be your poison as well.

Tell me about it. I'm not the smartest dude in the world by a long shot but my intellect and desire for knowledge and the knowledge I have makes it hard for me to relate to my peers.

Don't get caught up in that peasant's way of thinking, ya'll!

There's one way of thinking that the serfs have that keep them in servitude.

And there's another way of thinking that the nobility has that helps them in making informed decisions about the world they live in, and in keeping the serfs in line.

One group is given their way of thinking by the other group, through means of defining what is an acceptable and unacceptable way to think within society.

People decide which group they belong to long before they realize it. Some realize it and decide it's better to remain in that group, and others never realize which group they're in at all.

Alot of times your family and/or community communicate to you which group you belong to, and it's up to you to a) realize which group this is, and b) decide whether or not it's the group for you.

still trying to figure out if this was a troll thread...
education has led to us as a society being able to cure diseases/take care of people, discover new places, learn about our environment, etc.

how does this not matter to you

Some opportunity comes with education, but once you reach a certain point, there is no reason to be educated. Once you have a certification and a job in that field, what is the point of "knowing"  a bunch of stuff, is it personal? It must be, because outside of a select group of people no one really cares how much you know about the battle of Troy

There is a certain level of discretion in what "battles" you fight, but if you aren't going to spread the information, especially when someone is giving out false  information, than whats the point of learning it?

Society doesn't really care if you are actually knowledgable about the subject, unless you have Dr. next to your name, and even then people will call you a crock. You say that Knowledge creates opportunity, but anyone with a degree that is looking for a job can tell you, there are a thousand people out there with the same certification, knowing who Kant is may get you a job in a minority of situations and fields, but knowing who won American Idol or being able to expound on breaking bad will get you a lot further, as that is what the people  you network with will be talking about, opposed to the Last Maya Angelou poem. Pop Culture and sports are a much better subject to talk about when you first meet someone than it is to talk about theories of transcendental idealism.

So honestly, whats the point? It doesn't really help you move up in society, i.e you're better off knowing about the local sports team than you are about Utilitarianism; it for damn sure doesn't help you get yambs, very few of us are going to actually be a mover and a shaker....so why take the time? Personal growth? Thats it, and I haven't decided it's exactly worth the personal growth, the feelings of alienation, the false sense of security, the constant questioning, the constant worrying....

BTW if you haven't been in a situation in which you knew you were the only person that knew what was going on and felt weird about it, you probably should study a bit more.

Ok bruh....sounds like you decided which group you belong to.

In fact, I'm not gonna say that because it sounds like you're battling with which group you'd feel more comfortable in.

There are lots of people who know and have conversations about things like history, politics, philosophy, books, etc.

But it seems like you're just not around any of them.

You just have to realize that 85 percent of all people are deaf, dumb, and blind; completely unable to grasp the issues, ideas, and concepts that actually inform the way the world works. As blissful as the ignorance may be, it's still ignorance, and these people are still at the mercy of whatever that upper 15 percent, those who think about geography and ancient battles and the financial system, decide and agree upon. 10 outta that 15 percent is purposefully keeping the 85 unaware to make YOU feel like it would be easier to give up control of your life and just exist as another cog in the system. You could be an extremely successful serf, but at the end of the day you'd still be tilling someone else's land.

You could take this thirst for self development and growth and knowledge, and you could use either a) get overwhelmed and give up and join the 85, b) figure out how to use it to control others for your own personal use at the expense of the happiness of others along, or c) try to use it to improve the world around you, though only 5 percent of the population actually does his because of that feeling you yourself are feeling right now.

The choice is yours. You could be one of the special people, or another commoner, or the loser guy who is obsessed with having knowledge for knowledge's sake.

Me personally, I choose the route of General Alexandre Dumas and Alessandro de' Medici, First Duke of Florence.

And on some real **** I'd like to take a second and give someone props. Even though I hate every thought that dude Ninjahood has ever had, and even though I hope he never makes it outta Da Heightz because if anyone outside of his block or NT heard his opinions then the planet earth would IMMEDIATLEY get dumber, I respect dude for the fact that he obviously is into learning about things, researching and forming his own opinions. Even though all of his opinions suck.

Speaking from personal experience.. I 'mask' my intelligence so I don't come off as a douche.

The way I talk/act amongst friends you would never expect me to know a fraction as much about the sciences as I do or just knowledge in general.. So when someone in my vicinity says something incredibly stupid and tries to pass it off as fact in my mind I can call Ducktales AND explain why, but in reality I just keep my mouth shut. Same reason why I rarely argue on this forum now too.. Simply not worth the time.

Sad, but sometimes learning and educating yourself gives you a edge when it comes to "shop politics". The more you can speak on things that don't matter and make yourself look smarter goes further in my job than actual work performance.

dudes still in here debating?

like somebody above me said...knowledge leads to cures for disease, new economic systems, better designs of automobiles/buildings, etc.

i'm telling y'all man the problem is just that y'all lame/socially awkward. :rollin

and all this the more you know, the more stressed you are....... :|

that's a YOU thing.

i know lots of ****** up stuff, but it doesn't stop me from having fun, enjoying life/my family.

if you're gonna die anyway, like you doofuses say, then why does all this info stress you out?

y'all not even makin logical sense, which is expected since y'all on here questioning why we should learn things. :lol

and after school you learn what you wanna learn.

also, y'all just all over the place and just talking now.

how did degrees get brought up? dude straight up saying it's better to know less info

and that your general personality is shaped by people around you.

nope nope nope. in most situations this would be out of line to say, but: you're living life WRONG.

y'all seriously saying it's better to be a follower who is being controlled by what you see on tv to fit in w/ other idiots.

damn dawg maybe the world need to end cuz people ran out of theories to delve into

It just makes you wonder... Who's really doing it right/wrong?
They both are. And that is why life is so amazing.

The one who is completely oblivious to the world and the one who is completely attentive both meet the same end.

Granted -- one path is certainly more beneficial to society, but even then only to an extent. If knowledge is power, then it too can be corrupted and used against others. (IMO... nah nevermind. another thread.)

Thinking about this kind of stuff is what gets me through the work day. :hat

Cures for diseases comes from hardwork and mechanical knowledge, that is different than abstract knowledge.  The ability to perform open heart surgery comes with study, there is a definite answer to that, that is not the knowledge I ask about, I am more concerned with the abstract knowledge of social constructs, religious knowledge, most of history.

It is better for you to know whats going on with sports than it is for you  to know whats going on in the universe. Which comes up more in job interviews, or at most jobs in general "Have you seen the latest movement of maximus centari" or "did you see that A.P run?" It is true, that for some people the movement of maximus centari is relevant in their life, but fact is, I learned all about astronomy and I can tell you, it hasn't come up once in my life.

If you don't think about what it means to be part of society, what information truly matters and which doesn't, if you have already figured it out, that tells me that you don't have enough life experience.

i do think about what it means to be apart of society.

that's why i'll call you lame and socially awkward if you can't keep your intelligence under wraps when you chillin/havin fun.

honestly, all y'all in here doing is blaming "abstract knowledge" for not fitting in.

that's stupid.

Nah, that's just the temperament that many people align with thinking -- stress, for those on the periphery of society, etc.

I figure that's why it seems the less you work, the more you get paid. The CEOs, the steer committees of trusts and hedge funds, the people who get hired by think tanks, etc... They get paid to think.
