I am looking at buying a bicycle, but I do not know what brand or model to look for. Any suggestions? Most likely will try to find one from my local craiglist listings. Only brand i know is GIANT, other than that I am lost. The bike will be used to get me from here to there, and some bike rides every know and then.

If you don't know what you're doing going for a big brand makes some sense - Giant are fine, so are Specialized and Trek.

You probably want a mountain bike - just more useful and comfortable for bashing about on. If you're mostly riding in town it's worth swapping the tires for something narrower and less knobbly - makes road riding a lot easier.

What kind of bike are you looking for. Mountain, road, cyclocross, bmx, beach cruiser, etc. I'm into cycling, ride 150-200 miles a week, all road miles. Let us know what kind of riding and what type of bike you want and i can help you out.

I'd definitely get a road bike in that case. If its all street use you could get a mountain bike but if your work is 45 minutes away a road bike will have less rolling resistance then a mountain bike. A commuter will probably be best for you if you don't want a full on race road bike. If your in a big city craigslist might be good. Probably the biggest thing to look for when you get a bike is the size, make sure you get a bike that fits you. See people all the time riding a wrong sized frame which leads to an uncomfortable ride if your too stretched out on the bars or its too small. Could lead to knee damage if the seat is too low and if its too high you'll develop cramps a lot sooner then if the bike were the proper size. A lot of people are fixated on what brand to buy before anything but sizing is the biggest thing.

If you have a bike shop you can go to near you i'd talk to them a bit and you can get a rough idea of what sized frame you'll need. Even if you don't buy from them and go the craigslist route at least you'll know what to look for as far as sizing and probably what kind of bike you wanna go with. Its an addicting sport, at least for me it is. Gets expensive too. Good luck.

Just picked up a Specialized 'Sirrus' road bike a few weeks ago. A few friends also copped road bikes, one copped a Sirrus also and the other copped a Trek FX 7.3.
Were all very happy and bike NYC a few times a week now. Plan on going on some longer rides during the summer.

Edit: It sounds like you'd be cool with a commuter road bike. BTW, those bikes were our firsts bikes so we didnt know too much either but were all happy with the purchases.

That looks pretty good, although its probably gonna be too big. If your 5'7 a 56cm frame will be big. I'm 5'11 and one of my bikes is a 56, my other bike is a 55. At 5'7 i'd say a 54 might be good for you. I ride with someone thats about your height and rides a 54. 52 might even work out as well, depends on the frames geometry. Some manufacturers go with odd number sizing some go with even. On Trek, Specialized, Giant and all the big brands out there usually go with even numbers.

That bike seems like a medium frame. I'm 5'10 and I have a medium frame road bike and its good for me. My friend is shorter, about 5'8 and he also has a medium frame with no problems.
